View Full Version : Help me
Hi all. I was coming back from gatwick down the motorway when I car boosted to 1.74 bar. It's only supposed to hit 1 bar. When I got off the motorway it sounded like the exhaust was blowing. Got home and it seems to be blowing out of the engine bay. As i know hardly anything about these is there anyone local who can have a look and Identify the problem and tell roughly how much it's gonna cost. Willing to pay in money, beer, tea, and biscuits. Please help
Look on the exhaust side of the of your turbo, is the hot air coming from the gasket between the turbo and the 'elbow' that joins upto the turbo? Look for sotty desposits (black) around joints. Really not uncommon for gaskets to go. Boosting that high is though!
Secondly.. why did it boost that high? What boost control are you running?
probs the gsaskets as above...
i did a top speed run in my car on a private test track ( of course) and the result of that was it blew the gasket to pieces...
why the fook did it booth that high thou?! make that your prioity cos that aint good! supprised it didnt hit fuel cut?!

mine did that years ago and it was a boost leak from the controller, hose popped off..
the noise could also be the ic pipeing has come loose??
Will check what boost controller it is when I get home from work. How much am I looking at if it is the turbo gasket? Cheers for your help guys.
megaboost will be wastegate related - the hose has probably popped off the actuator. blowing gasket sounds like a tractor. start the engine when it's cold and feel around the turbo/manifold for any leaking exhaust pressure. be careful, it gets hot quickly.
average prices....turbo gasket £20, braided hoses £70, locking nuts etc £20, labour £200. polo will do the whole job with parts for £170 plus the braided lines if you don't have them already, look in the traders section in the S Body Automotive forum
On one hand I'd say do the job yourself, but on the other - £170 for the job done..... Tempting just for having the heatshields removed  .
I would prefer to do the work as I want to know about my car but I don't really have a clue were to begin. The boost controller is a blitz one and it's also a blitz actuater.
Changing the Turbo gasket isn't really difficult. It's just time consuming, especially the first time as you learn where everything goes (and remove the heatshields lol). Look through Aitch's guide and take your time, but don't scrimp on parts - You don't want to be doing the job again in a month's time!!!!!
As well as the Manifold>Turbo gasket you'd be best changing the Turbo>Elbow gasket while everything is off, (may as well buy an uprated elbow while you're at it,) and buying braided hoses and metal locking nuts is a must! S14 has a multilayer Head>Manifold gasket that you can re-use but the S13 will probably need new ones.....
One last thing - When you drain the radiator..... Make sure it's downhill of where you're working :wack: .
