View Full Version : Mobile phones in cars
With all of the talk of banning mobile phones in cars, I thought it was time to get the "SXOC judgement" :D
I personally don't see the problem with hands free, or are they going to ban talking to your passengers next or even having having kids in the car
IMO they should only be used with a proper hands free car kit
What scares me is people texting whilst driving, how the hell do they manage that
That's just fcukin dangerous, you not looking where you are going or in control of the car

Handsfree's OK. At least then it'll force the boss to get me a decent car handsfree kit.

I don't drive and talk, but I can drive and txt no problem coz i don't look at the screen!! I just know where all the buttons are!!
I actually think that banning loud music while driving would be a good thing!!
I remember the AA did a survey of accidents, and found that an alarmingly high number of "careless" accidents may have been caused by loud music!!
I personally hate driving and listening!!
Keep propper fitted hands free but ban the rest. It'd seriously damage my business if I/we couldn't use the phone in cars.
Think you should be able to use them with handheld kit, not the wire going to your ear things though.
I have a nokia kit in mine, so you just talk, like you wold to a passenger and they talk back, so to ban these, you have to ben talking to passengers as well, as it is no different :D
People who use their phones to their ears should be smacked about the head.......as should people who smoke, holding a smouldering stick in your hand whilst driving is a tad phycotic too :D

you can tell the people on their mobile phones on the motorway... they are the ones swaying and not keeping to their lane... so i think there's really only one option. however neither me, anyone i've seen or the police seem to have problems talking to passengers so it would be daft to ban hands-free kits.
if it wasnt for music i think there'd be more accidents. the statement about music causing accidents is very VERY vague. maybe its when people crouch down to change radio stations or flick through their CD collection while going round a roundabout that causes them, but i really can't see the problem with listening to radio/music (unless its meditative and they are closing their eyes!!)
I agree that texting while driving and talking on the phone without a handsfree kit on 90% of roads, especially through towns, is dangerous, although I am guilty of frequently doing the latter and occasionally the former :o
However, talking on the phone while using a handsfree kit is totally safe IMO and is no worse than chatting to a passenger.
I also see no problem with using your phone - non-handsfree - on a motorway or other similarly straight road, because again it's no worse than chatting to a passenger and you don't need both hands anyway :)

Loud music causes your reaction times to suffer, also the other implications of . . . . . .
Not hearing a horn/siren
Singing and losing concentration
Headbanging and losing concentration
Not being able to hear a "dodgy" noise coming from car
ie. engine about to seize, turbo blowing etc etc
Ban them all:mad:
I've nearly been killed twice on the bike because some twat was on the phone having a heated discussion and weaving across the road. And one was a hands free kit:mad:
Plenty of people have managed without a phone in their car for years without a problem. Nothing is that important it can't wait till you are safely pulled in somewhere.
Yes music is a distraction as well, but it doesn't cause your mind to be totally elsewhere like a business problem does.
Sorry but when its my life on the line then BAN THEM

With the amount of laborious motorway miles i do i would have crashed and burned long ago if it werent for loud music keeping me awake :D (interspursed by the odd phone call on the hands free!) :D :wack:
I don't have a hands free kit yet for mine, but if it rings, I do answer and just say 'hang on while I pull over'.

Of course it would be far better if they just banned shit drivers.
Would also solve conjestion problems aswell, as there would only be about 1/10th of the drivers on the road!
Make ppl take a PROPER driving test once a year. If you're any good at driving, you should be able to safely be on the phone and a motorway at the same time. When I'm round town and someone rings, I demand to know it its important, and if it is, every time I get to a junction etc, they have to wait.
The other thing that pisses me off is ppl phoning me on my mobile, knowing full well there is a very high chance i'll be in the van, with something that can wait until I see them:mad: and then I point this out and they continue to ask:mad:   at this point they clearly know I'm not best pleased.

Ban from 1st December (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3015610.stm)
Also
It is also warning users of hands-free phones that they still risk prosecution for failing to have proper control of their vehicle or for careless or reckless driving.
Good. Holding a phone to your ear whilst driving is very dangerous. Besides, most modern phones support Bluetooth which makes having a decent hands free kit in the car a piece of cake.

Deffo agree with this and not saying I am a perfect driver. But I do use all mirrors and windows when driving plus always indicate.
Just doing the above would save so may accidents, people just don't look or think, they tend to drive via the windscreen if you know what I mean. Allowing people who drive like this to use a mobile phone at the same time is just nuts.
:)
Im sorry but you cannot ban proper built in phone kits like i have, youd have to ban passengers as well, which would be a direct movement agains the governments own car sharing iniciatives ;)
You also have to ban though navigation systems that shout out directions........music........engine noise and black out windows to stop interaction with other road users which may lead to your mind being else where...........:D

It's not so much the noise/talking that's at issue, from the governments point of view - their point is that while a passenger can see the road conditions, and understands when breaks in the conversation are needed ie for roundabouts, changing lanes etc, someone on the end of a phone can't see this, and so you have to split your concentration between the two.
Some people are better at this than others - I know I'm not capable of doing it safely, so I ignore the phone till I can pull over and answer it, or I call them back.

I can understand that, but I think you'll get that with anything.
I believe that I am a very responsible driver, 99% of the time use the in-ear jack. the other 1% i'm in a traffic jam at less than 1mph telling people i'm stuck and will be late.
I resent the govt or the AA telling us that talking is bad. So is talking to a passenger and everything else. tell you what. i'll walk to 10 miles to work down deserted unlit backroads. then i can't be in danger of killing some on, can I?
oh btw while i'm on the subject of what not to do while driving.
Don't have heartburn.
Hiccups
A sneezing fit.

I think the majority of accidents are caused by people not paying attention. You can ban all of the in car distractions (mobiles, stereos, sat navs, passengers, sandwichesm, choccy bars, cigarettes, totty on the pavement, that bloody BMW i-drive) but this isn't going to make the driver pay any more attention.
How can you stop someone driving when tired, after a hard day at work, worrying about their husband, wife, girlfriend, dog, promotion etc? IMHO if you aren't able to cope with the multitude of distractions that you face every time you get in the car and deal with the task in hand then you shouldn't be on the road.
