How do I get rid of Windows Messenger Service Pop ups?

How do I get rid of these damn pop ups?

Even if I don't have a web browser open these annoying things appear - and it seems to be getting worse, like one every five minutes!!

Please help

Ok assuming you have Windoze XP :-

Open Control Panel
Click on Performance and Maintenance
Click on Administrative Tools
Double Click Services
Scroll down till you find Messenger
Right Click on it
Now choose Properties and set it to Disable and Stop
Click Apply

That should do it :)
