If it's of interest, there was feature on this in Practical Performance Car a few isues back. Could be some good contacts in there. Drop the editor, Will Holman, an email, sure he'd be able to fid the details of the company they used when wrting the article.

im not fond on them but i want the arches but aint got the cash for wide wheels to fill them yet as i want to sort out performance first, so steelies will do 4 now and then for drifting in the future

Banded steelies will be at least £300 if not more for all 4 wheels! depending how much of a band you want on them as the normally charge per ich of band put on! plus banded steelies look the bollocks with jun/jun style arches!! with £300/£400 in your pocket you could grab a decent pair of seond hand wheels for that  just athought tho

what do you guys reckon the max brake size would be to fit beind some 16"?

315mm discs will fit under 16s with 4 pot calipers. I don't think you'd be able to get away with much bigger than that though.

where the hell am i gonna find a set of them? how do you go about this anyway? get a set of steel wheels and find someone who "extends" them? ie puts a bad boy dish on them?

If your looking for larger diameter wheels to band I think the best bet would be spacesavers. I think they'll cost twice as much to band tho cos they will need a band on the outside and a band on the inside to give any decsent width.

Exactly. I have 4 15" steelies that I will eventually get banded for mu 306

i have a couple of Qs here, if i was to say get some 17" steelies and have then dished untill they're say 8" wide what sort of profile would i need on the tyes so that they have the same roling diameter as the standards ... (so my speedo isnt massively out?)

Also more importantly, for you guys able to stick the lil 15" and stuff on this isnt much of a prob because at that scale of things it's all relatively light but when you start talking about 17" by 8" or 9" wide, how much are said set of steels weigh? more/less than say some 18" by 9" rota D1s? i'm just wondering because at the moment my wheels (with big fat tyres mind) weigh roughly 20Kg each which is a fare wack on weight!

The profile you need will depend on the width of tyre you choose to put on the rims, rather than the width of the rim itself (although of course the width of the rim will dictate the tyre widths available to you).

Check the tyre size calculator on here: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html

i've had to give up the idea as when i got home earlier i started looking at the calipers and thinking... basicly to fit some steels i'd have to bolt some MASSIVE spacers to the car, which meant that then by the time i added a decent dish they would stick out like fook not to mention the cost of the whole thing by the time i added costs of things like new spacers and studs and alll that non sence would be well into the price of a nice set of alloys...

What brakes are you running ? the space saver spare fits over the stock ones.
