View Full Version : Cyclists
Driving back from the DIY store this morning I come to a set of traffic lights which, for me are on green. as I go through them a cyclist cuts across my bow from the direction where the lights were red.
I had to brake hard enough to activiate the ABS and swerve violently to avoid him. I papped my horn and all I got back from this motherfcuker was a torrent of abusive language.
I mean who was in the wrong here?
I'm absolutley sick of cyclists who don't give a damn about traffic regs, do exactly as they please and never ever get stopped by plod.
And the worst thing is, if there had been an accident, by law my insurance would have had to pay up even though I was not to blame.
Am I being intollerant or do others feel the same?

Totally agree JB. I had roughly the same thing happen to me. Was pulling away from some lights after changing to green, cyclist then shot straight off the pavement, infront of my car!!! I planted my foot on the brakes (thanks god for s14 brakes) stopped within inches of the little sh*t and he just smiled and carried on!!! They really should be a law against cyclists, something along the lines of "If you have a bike and use it regulary, you must sell it or face imprissionment".
;) :D
If you think cyclists are bad, take a trip out to the country where I live and experiance the joy of sharing the road with horse riders. Not only do they leave piles of s*it everywhere, they force you to slow down, turn down your ice and drive on the wrong side of the road!
Horses dont belong on the roads or they would have tyres instead of horse shoes. Horseriders act like they own the roads but would be the first to complain if I started driving (sideways) round their fields!! :D

Uh-oh don't start this one again :D
We had a BIG argument a while back about this :D
PS:
Yes I agree JB, they're absolute nutters with no respect for traffic laws (most of the time)
Dave
Haven't the RAC just started a big campaign about this sort of thing.
They want cyclists running red lights to activate cameras (just like cars), but unless they all ahve to ahve number plates how the hell will you know who it is???
Personally I think all 4x4's should be equipped with anti-cyclist bull bars to clear the road for fast moving 200's (not unlike a snow plough:D )
Alg;)
To be honest if it hadn't benn for the missus urging me not to I'd have stopped and given the little twat a good hiding. Not for going through the red light but for the abuse he gave me afterwards. A few days in intensive care would maybe have reassessed the way he responds to people.

Ok, they should be respocable for a crash should they be the cause but to tax them
Don't be silly! Hows the father gonna expalin to his daughter that she can't ride her bike cause it has to be taxed! And also for tax, it means that every bike has to be regisitered etc!
I do think they should be prosocuted as i said tho
i paid perfect attention to the road signs and signal.
didn`t stop me being splattered over the a27 last year by some
****er in a 4x4.
Like all thing . a minority spoils your view.
Not all cylists are like that.

But is it a minority? I don't think so. I would say the majority pay no attention to the rules of the road. OK they may not go through red lights but they ride on pavements, undertake, don't stop at stop signs, ride without lights at night etc.etc.

I rarely see a bike riding at night with lights:eek:
I love shouting LIGHTS out of the window.

The voice of reason and moderation :D
You make me sound wishywashy mate, good on ya
I have to admit to having broken a few traffic laws on my bike, but not as many as I have broken in my car which I suppose is a similar amount to a lot of people on here. I have also seen cyclists doing stupid things when I've been driving and thought "what an idiot", but I've been on the receiving end of stupid driving from cars, busses (especially), and vans etc many more times.
The sad truth is that cyclists are put in danger so many times by motorists that they become confrontational like the guy JB encountered. That doesn't mean it's right especially as it seems he was in the wrong, but I think it's understandable - I've been there. Remember if you have a crash with a cyclist you will get a scratch or dent on your car, annoying I know, but the cyclist probably won't be so lucky!
The point is you can't generalise about cyclists because some of them don't obey the traffic laws - some drivers don't either.

Which is precisely why he shouldn't have gone through the red light.
Imagine if I had gone through a red light and hit a cyclist. Would anyone have any sympathy for me. No, and quite rightly.
So why do we have to make excuses for cyclists?

I did also say the guy was in the wrong and he shouldn't have done it. We shouldn't make excuses for this guy but the title of your thread is Cyclists in the plural and I don't believe we should all be tarred with the same brush.
I wanted to put the cyclists view point to the debate because clearly there are some idiotic cyclists but probably in equal measure to idiotic drivers.
I was cycling along the Tyburn Rd in Brum a while ago and one of those bendy busses came past me on a bend, cut the corner and forced me to swerve to the left to avoid him. Luckily there was another lane to my left not the kerb and no one was using that lane or I could have been seriously hurt. When I caught up with the bus at the next stop and asked the driver what he thought he was doing he started ranting "that's the trouble with you cyclists you don't look where you're going....." My assertion that looking where I was going had nothing to do with it as he came from behind me made no difference. He clearly hadn't seen me at all and didn't have a clue what he'd done so he pulled out the old chestnuts and went on the offensive.

I agree; if the cyclist 'may not be so lucky' then why be so stupid as to go through a red light? He obviously didn't even look either or he would've seen the traffic coming.
Imo cyclists should either stay on the pavement or pay tax and insurance and go on the road and be accountable for accidents.
TBH there are probably more bad drivers than there are cyclists, perhaps it’s a percentage thing. I've been knocked off my push bike 3 times by tossers in cars, I was never hurt, I kinda bailed twice. The other time someone came out of a junction at me, luckily he managed to hit my pedal before me and I just got cuts and bruises on my arms.
Honestly in the last year have you been cut up more often by cars or cyclists? Does it happen so often with cars you failed to remember? I now have to wear a crappy helmet because of the amount of accidents, in Solihull I avoid the main large islands because no one has any lane discipline or even seems to check for cyclists at all anymore.

Then we get moaned at, and rightly so, by pedestrians!
:D ;) RIGHT - ONCE MORE FOR THE HARD OF UNDERSTANDING! ;):D THE CYCLIST JB MENTIONED WAS CLEARLY STUPID AND IN THE WRONG. THERE ARE ALSO A LOT OF STUPID CAR DRIVERS. A STUPID CAR DRIVER CAN KILL A CYCLIST, A STUPID CYCLIST CANNOT KILL A CAR DRIVER
Anyway, as I recall, this subject got out of hand last time it was discussed so I'm not going to say any more now I've aired my views :)

Sorry but what if JB had to swerve so violently that he'd hit a car coming in the opposite direction??? Someone could easily have been killed. With the cyclist directly to blame.
Not all cyclists are bad, far from it... again its a stupid minority making every other look bad and its only the w@nkers you ever really see. Try counting the next time your out how many you see and how many piss you off.
Cyclists in London seem to think its their God given right to do what ever they like even when there is a separate area at the front of traffic lights especially for them, they seem to deem it fair to try and knock me down as I try and cross the road on a green light for me as a pedestrian:mad:
Rant over, I thank you:D
I'm a cyclist, no respect for traffic laws either. Probably because I'm lazy. Last thing you want to do on a bike is stop for some red light, means you have to build all that momentum back up again. And who can be arsed with going the long way round when you can just nip down that one-way street etc.....
BUT, I'm competent, and very observant and make damn sure I'm not getting in anyone's way.
To be honest I'd probably drive like that too, if it wasn't for registration plates and the fact that coppers would pull me over, but like you say, on a bike I can get away with it.
I don't see it as a problem, I've never caused a driver to take any action as a result of something I've done.
And I never get angry with cars either. Someone gets in my way, or cuts me up, or whatever, well I've seen it happening before it occurs, and I've already taken the evasive action of going down the wrong side of the road where there's no cars at the moment, for example.
Hell, I just see it as more of a challenge when cars go for me :)
Now though, don't get me started on pedestrians..... :P

I have a fun trick for these little puppies......stroll up to them in the Zed, being all quiet like....cruise past all sensible and considerate....then when about 15 yards past, open her up a bit, let the exhausts flow and watch horse rider poop herself trying to control her animal......works every time.
If you wanna ride a horse, do it in a damn paddock or field! When was the last time you saw a 200sx or a Zed going off road....know what I mean?

Words fail me
Wak: I take your point that not all cyclists are like that and maybe I should have thought a little harder about the title of the thread.
However, I stick with my assertion that the majority of cyclists don't abide by traffic laws. Mind you, you could say the same about the majority of motorists :(
I suppose my real beef wasn't that he he went through the red light but that he had a go at me and called me fcuking facist Merc driving bastard when it was he in the wrong.
Since threads like this lead to heated arguments I won't post another. Next time I'll just kill the fecker and take my frustration out like that :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Sorry, what have I missed? I hope you're not about to get on a moral high ground about breaking the law, or do you never go over 70mph?
Oooh, a heated debate, wonderful :)

It's not the end of discussion. i put it to you that I am just as safe in jumping red lights when it's clear as you think you are when you're hooning down the road at a hugely illegal speed.
In fact jumping red lights is so safe that it's LEGAL in some countries (e.g. in US you can turn right through a red light if it's clear).
