OK guys

My pc was running perfect then started to crash. So much so windoze got corrupted. I can't reinstall fully as it keeps crashing

When I now power the pc up, the hard drive light comes on, but no power light. Leave it powered up and about 3-5 mins later the power light comes on and it starts to boot.

It restarts widoze instalation but then crashes.

Goes through the same routine again! I've tied another power supply unit but its just the same. I suspect motherboard is knackered

Its a 733 pIII, slot one.

Cheers

did you fdisk it???

in DOS mode use 'fdisk /mbr'

i think thats it anyway... clear the boot sector *Master Boot Record*!

Which windows are you trying to install?

Craig.

Something's failing on the POST, or one of your peripherals playing up. Bad news mate, but the only way to find out whats causing it is to replace every component with a known good one(or remove it), one by one until it works.
That includes:
Processor
Motherboard
Graphics card
Memory
Drives
Anything else thats attached to the motherboard.

I would start with all of your expernal peripherals before anything major. Remove them all, then if it works, plug them in one by one. If it starts failing when one of your peripherals is plugged in, unplug everything else and just plug that in. If it works, then either your power supply cant take it, or there is some kind of conflict, depending on the age of the components.

How powerful is your PSU?
Is it a decent one? 75% of all power supplies cannot make their rating - the cheeper ones tend to bullshit more, though.

As strange and funny as it sounds i had a similar problem with a keyboard. Would turn it on and nothing , then a couple of minutes later it would boot. Took me ages to figure it out, kept taking it back where i got it from and they set it up and it worked, would bring it home and nothing. Then realised they was using theitr own mouse and keyboard so changed them and it worked.

Ok, just tried unplugging everything except the power! Still it won't put the pwer light on. looks like the motherboard has died :(

Not to worry, got a pc fair in Dundee tomorrow. I may pick up an old slot 1 board to tide me over before I go the P4 route
