Hey folks, I like taking the odd pic and I have been wanting to buy a DSLR for a while now. I'm not looking for a total pro set up. Just a middle of the road SLR.
I clocked THIS (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=452245)in the for sale section but being a good few years old I'm a little unsure of how long it will last me. I dont fancy splashing out the guts of £400 if I have to cough up more cash a year down the line on repairs or another camera.
What would the photo guru's on here advise for my budget for me?

also interested in this - after playing with jamies nikon i need a dslr in my life - every picture taken looked awesome!
I would buy 2nd hand
The 30D would be fine for you
You can expect around 50,000 shutter actuations from a consumer SLR made by Canon

If you're interested, we're thinking of selling our Olympus E500 plus all the kit with it for about £300. That includes two lenses, a lithium battery + charger, plus a waterproof carry bag. It's the DSLR I've used for a couple of years now, only getting rid because I get three new DSLRs from work which range from good to fap-worthy. :D

Mine is a D60 i paid around £300 for it last year but they have sinnce brought out new models which Jim (form the ring trip) had.
Wullie/Ben, If you can find the D60 for cheap then i would go for it, very very good beginner DSLR

You were lucky then. Having a DSLR doesn't automatically make you a photography genius - you will take plenty of shit shots while you are learning . I was ready to go back to my compact at first because I knew all the settings on that and how to get the best from it, while I was taking some crap shots with the DSLR :wack:

This is what i bought last year from talkphotography for around £300 delivered second hand. The camera was like new in every sense and can take some great pictures if you know what your doing. Which i dont..............yet :wack:

This is exacly what im like at the moment. Lots of crap photos and the odd few excelent ones that you would never beable to get with a compact.

The whole idea of a DSLR is its' range of adjustability, and how adaptable it is to different environments etc. They're a pain in the arse for point and click shooting, if for nothing else other than their size. But for proper planned shooting, you can't match them once you know what you're doing, especially when it comes to moving objects, or shots in low lighting. Just bear with it and it'll click.

I'm probably double that and more!
The price for the one in the sale section is ok. They're around £300 on eBay so it's if you think the other things are worth £75, which they probably are.

I solve this problem by taking LOTS of photographs and deleting the sh*t ones. I look like a pro:thumbs::wack:
Have a look on some photography forums.
Bit over your budget but i got a cracking deal at Jessops today on a 450D twin lens kit for £550

rubix just got my hands on a dslr so thought id stick it here,
got an olympus e510 to use and see if i like it before i buy it. found it annoying as hell to start with but once id turned off the auto flash and stuck it in manual rather than auto im really liking it!! took it to dublin instead of my point of shoot and the photos are infinitely better!!
theyre going up on FB shortly if you wanna look dude :)
Using a DSLR camera is alot harder than using a point and shoot for obvious reasons. I've taken many many many crap shots that have been deleted with my DSLR, it can be off putting.
Rubix, you should of spoke to me about this at the weekender, I could of given you some hands on advice....ooo eeerrrr.
Buy 2nd hand and you will get a much better camera, I'm no good on the canon side of the fence so looking at Nikons for £400ish, look at D80's, D200's & D90's

Well as you may have seen by the original post date. I decided to not buy a camera...although I still want one....just want to get the car stuff sorted out first.

Stick with it. They are worth getting - I've still got loads to learn with my 450D but it's far more interesting than a point and shoot

Yeah I'm just wondering if I should buy one sooner rather than later as tbh it would get used more than the car IMHO.
Oh and out of all the photographers on here....do you know any good forums to get pointers from about stuff?

Well funny you should mention, i have my Nikon D60 for sale at the moment, its about 1 year old it has around 3.5k pictures taken (which as juz said much like for canon the average shutter life is 50k shots) anyway its absolutely spotless i have all the boxes manuals CDs Cables and i never even filled in th Nikon warranty paperwork so you could even register with Nikon as your own camera.
The extras it comes with are a UV filter extra original Nikon Battery remote control (for self portraits or long exposure shots so you dont vibrate the camera by pressing the button) and it has a ultra high speed memory card which is ... 4 or 8GB i cant remember but it's big enough for some 420 odd RAW images and if you shoot in JPEG then its just silly big, 1000s of pics worth.
The battery life is fantastic, i shot the whole day at japfest (som 300pics worth) and then took the camera to the weekender (same battery without recharging) and shot again throughout the weekend (again 380 odd pics besides the ones i deleted at the time) and i still have some charge left on that same battery!
Basicly you get the camera body, kit leans (18-55 VR leans) 1 UV filter, 2 batteries, camera strap, remote, memroy card, bettery charger, leans hood, usb lead all brand new looking and in boxes.
I'm sure i forgot to mention something as it has many bits and bobs if you're interested and have doubts about anything just PM me.
ahh and obviously the asking price is £300.
