Action call over light jumping (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3005364.stm)

About time too, you can't make a clean getaway at the lights if cars are still coming through on red

When I worked in Bristol, a red light seemed to mean "just another 3 cars"

A much better, and more legitamate target than speed cameras on deserted straight country roads!!!

I hate people that jump lights... and ive often been stuck behind lights for a second time round as 'people' still drive though the blatantly red signal...

Hear hear, what a good idea, much better than speed cameras :)

Hmmm bet they could make a few quid on red light cameras if they made the lights change to red faster with less time spent on amber, that would catch a few out nicely.... bit like a certain set on the A127 near a certain ford dealership

Still as you say it is better than speed cameras, but I reckon if given the choice they would do have both so we are doubly screwed. :(

I agree, I like to be able to pull away swiftly from lights, I must admit a couple of times I've just pulled away as normal and made the jumpers think I'm going to hit them, which I know is not atall sensible, but it might make them think about doing it again..

Hehe, I do this on roundabouts too, I deliberately accelerate towards people who look like they're about to pull out in front of me, and then if they do anyway, I sound my horn and frown at them :D

I'm not an angry young man, honest :D :D

there should be some sort of rule to how long the lights stay amber, i.e. they have to stay amber for the amount of time that the average car takes to safely come to a stop from the speed limit

Thats the problem, its a 40 mph zone with two lanes (at the juntion I refer to in my original post) and people often bunch so its not such a great idea to jam on your brakes and have them go into the back of you.

On several occasions my dad has been knobled by these lights and forced to do a full on abs stop to avoid the red light camera. One time they changed so quick (couldnt have been more than 15-20ft away from the lights) that we ended up stopping with just the back wheels over the line in the road that you wait behind... and it was dry so perfect braking conditions :(

The tactic to deal with these lights now is to let off to 30 in anticipation that they could change, pissing everyone off behind who wants to nip through. Or to drop a cog and be ready to floor it if amber comes up.

Surely there is some legislation stating the standard time (or formula used to derive a standard time) for which the amber must be active as a 'warning, that the lights are going to change to red'.

We are having a main road near us dug up at the moment as part of the councils policy of road disruption. There are temporary traffic lights. The time between the lights going red in one direction and turning green the other is about 30 seconds, which is more than enough time to get through if you don't jump the red light.

Yesterday morning on my way to work the lights turned green and there was still a constant stream of traffic coming through. After about 10 cars I got pissed off with it and pulled out into the oncomming traffic. Stayed there until the 5 cars that still had to come through realised I wasn't going to move and were obliged to reverse all the way back.

It just takes the piss and makes me so

But then so does everything :D

LMAO, I think you have a point there :p

Lets hope we dont all end up driving like they do in spain where they tend to think that red lights are opptional :|

There is. They have to stay amber for 3 seconds (plus or minus 0.25 seconds) before turning to red.:)

Lost count of the number of times I've gone thru a light thinking maybe I could have stopped cos it was a bit too amber to then be amazed at the 3 or 4 cars that follow me thru
