View Full Version : Air cooled
Can and how would you know if an air cooled motor overheated ? Would it just blow up ? my bike got hot yesterday and with no temp gauge how would I know ??
What other than looks (?) are the advantages of split rims against standard alloys ? They certainly cost more.

You can fit bigger tyres on them. Anything over 20's and I imagine a certain width it becomes physically impossible to wedge the tyre over the hub. Also means you can change the tyres leaving the hubs on the ride I think .............
Or I could just be spouting arse :)

Spilt rims are usually of much higher quality!!
They are mad from 2 or 3 pieces of individually forged or cast material.
It means that the hub (made of of spokes and bolt holes etc) can be drop forged, making it very strong and so lighter.
Also it means that you can use different materials for different sections of the wheel, so magnesium can be used for 1 part and alluminiun for 2 parts etc

If it overheats too much you'll do the same damage you'll do to a water-cooled engine.
Buy an oil temp gauge or cylinder head temp gauge.
Oil temp is pretty important on air-cooled engines.
