View Full Version : Grinding Noise
Guys, had this for a while but now its getting quite frequent. I am running an unknown model of OS Giken Twin Plate clutch, so naturally when I press the pedal I get the twin plate sound. When pulling off from standstill I get a little grinding noise coming from the clutch/gear box area. When I am moving I get nothing but smooth changes. It also happens in reverse. Now its not everytime I stop I get this, but it is becoming more frequent. I get it when the car is warm more so, as when its cold the engine is revving higer, or when I give it a little when pulling off I dont get it. Its like when I try and pull off from the clutch or hold the car on the clutch I get it more.
Could it be the release bearing or is it new clutch time?
I had it before I swapped the engine so its nothing to do with that, also when I had the engine out I looked at the clutch and it was ok.
:annoyed:
I get a similar sound on mine too :(
I'm also running an unknown twin plate and have noticed a strange noise when setting off, but mine is more of a whirring sound not grinding, and it's becoming more frequent. Mostly it happens when setting off slowly from a standstill, I've also noticed it being harder to get in gear but I've put that down to the recent installation of a short shifter. It doesn't feel like it's slipping either.
Has the pedal motion changed? Mine used to require He-Man leg to press the pedal but it's a lot softer now and the biting point is not as sharp, although after nearly 3 years my leg is probably used to it:wack: Maybe check the master & slave cylinder to see if they're ok?
If it's new clutch time are you thinking of a replacement plate kit or a normal single plate unit? last time I looked on RHDJapan the plate kits were a bit on the expensive side to say the least..

No pedal is still HE Man task, all cylinders are fine and use a braided clutch line which bypasses alot of the gubbins underneath.
I love this clutch so I would look at getting a exact replacement
Also its not so much grinding, as you say its like a whirring but I can feel it through the gear lever
I had a mate in mine and he commented about the noise when I pushed the clutch pedal to the floor. A similar grinding/whirring sound from your description.
He suggested it might be the "thrust bearing" as it only does it when the pedal is depressed.
Easy to change?
lol not a clue mate...Dont even really know what it is tbh....:annoyed:
I also dont know if my clutch is standard or uprated either. The joys of jap imports. We randomly found that the inlets on my (car's) head had been polished up when we had the plenum off sorting a coolant leak:wack:
Sounds exactly the same issue :(
I'm the same - the clutch is too nice to change:nod:
Do you know roughly how many miles it's done? The plates should last for years with a couple of track days and launches thrown in.
Milage, not a clue, its done 6k in two years since I have had it.
Thrust bearing is another name for the release bearing.
Had mine almost 3 years and done about the same. No idea what mileage was done in Japan before that but it was well drifted.

Thrust/release bearing = a whirring noise when your pedal is fully released, but quietens down when you push your pedal in. They commonly go under abuse, they are easy to replace but usually you have to buy a clutch kit to get hold of them.
Twin plates are different with this problem - they make a noise when the pedal is pushed down (disengaged clutch), it's hard to describe but I'd say it's kind of a rattly sound. On mine, when the pedal is fully released and clutch is engaged there is no noise, I think the same applies to Carta?
Sounds like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFtL-7RQRWU&feature=related) (sorry youtube embed code doesn't work?)
The issue with ours seems to be when the clutch pedal is let up and starts biting, a new whirring/grinding noise has started to appear. Makes it hard to pinpoint if it is the release bearing or clutch plates that are causing the issue.
While looking around I found this guide (http://www.zeroyon.com/index/content/view/59/47/1/0/) that could be useful for those people with twin plate clutches:)

Yep Si, thats how mine sounds when I press the pedal in to disengage the clutch. Upon releasing the pedal with the car in first I get a new sound which vibrates the gear lever and makes people go :wack:
Was trying on the way back from work to diagnose and see if I can replicate the issue, no joy. So I am thinking the warmer the car is more prone it is to making the sound. I may change the oil in the gear box!

i'm the other way around with my ORC twin plate - i have a nasty noise occasionally if i've left the car standing for a few days, i suspect it's surface corrosion on the plates.
goes once i've shifted a couple of times.
twin plates, welcome to the world of random noises :wack:
Rang RB Motorsport and they said its more than likely the release bearing. But to check to see if the bearing is away from the fingers when the clutch is not pressed!

I'm pretty sure that's the wrong way round dude, release bearing only spins when you press the clutch pedal so that's when the noise will occur. If the noise is like you describe then it's probably the gearbox input shaft bearing which is making the noise - pretty common on SR20 gearboxes.

I changed the gearbox oil in mine (Silkolene Silktran) when I fitted the short shifter a few weeks ago and the noise still happens:wack:
Could be the pivot ball is worn causing the fork & bearing not to move as far when the clutch is disengaged?
I'll probably hold out until it gets too annoying, by then the clutch will probably need an overhaul kit anyway.
It's funny the looks you get when stopped at traffic lights, I've had a few people wave and tell me it's making a funny noise and I should get it looked at:wack:

Might be worth checking the end float in your crank..
