View Full Version : Discuss - 90% of ALL new films SUCK
Discuss.
Either I have seen it all before or films today lack decent plots and scripts because I can't bring myself to see the blockbusters anymore. I think some of the problem lies with me because I am older now and have seen it all before and I want to be surprised and challenged by a film. But sadly that seems not to be the case.
New Star Wars : Drivel and the most wooden acting I have ever seen.
New Matrix : Drivel
LOTR : Badly adapted drivel.
The Hulk : I anticipate it being drivel
The last good films I can remember seeing are
13 Days
and
About Shmidt
Both of which had a budget of about 10p in comparison but both of which have ingrained themselves on my memory.
Let the discussion COMMENCE !
write ur own movie.
get it to involved 200sx's (of course)
soem random tirad gangs who are wickid at kung fu or sommat ( alternatively go to local gym and ask the big guys to fight the martial arts class while u film the action and then cut and paste into ur film or somehting.
u've also got to think of a random and new plot which has an open ending like the ending of the itsalian job
Yup, most films do suck, because they are made for spotty 13 year olds.
Bring back the ultra-violence and little bit of that ole inny-outty of Clockwork Orange, the superbness of Bladerunner or the sheer breath-takingness of 2001.
The best film I've seen in ages is "The Man Who Wasn't There" - absolutely incredible, but art house.
Generally, the best films are teh ones that only go on selected release.
Tell you one a REALLY wanted to see but never got chance to thanks to lack of distribution.
Michael Moores - Bowling for columbine high.
If anyone has ever read his book "Stupid white folk" they will know what I am talking about.
Right ...
I liked: Narc, Matrix Reloaded, Lotr 1, 2, Bourne Identity, Taxi 3 (heh), The Transporter, Bruce Almighty, Finding Nemo, The Core, DareDevil (11)
I disliked: Anger Management, 2F2F, Gangs of New York, Johnny English, Dumb and Dumberer, Dreamcatcher, (6)
More good than bad from that list, would say there are good and bads constantly but so far more good than bad recently.
lol heres and anomoly
How many people are over the age of 10 but still find Disney films more than watchable ?!
/me sticks hand up.
Oh aye...unfair...throw in this topic when it's my last week at work before I go off on my girly holiday (YAY) and I've heaps to do. Don't even get me started 'cos I'll most likely go on all day and we wouldn't want this turning into one of those 'conversation' threads...hehe. I'm gonna have a think and come back with a concise, and thereby very un-me like, reply. :D
I like most new films, they give me a chance to escape my futile and sometime perplexing mind :)
They are a great form of escapism, and make me forget I have a 2*****, until I get outside, and I make a b-line for it to make sure no scrotes have attacked it
You took your time getting here :p
I am oh so looking forward to your analysis wise one :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

My initial (concise) reply - tho most unlikely to be the last you hear of me on t'subject..the day is but young ;)- is READ. I'm not even gonna go into how many poor, nay dire, adaptations have been thrust upon us in recent years. That'll do for now Oh 'Sogonnagetaslapforstartingthistopic' One
:D
Black Hawk Down, sure its a year old and it was made about a conflict in the early 90s but every time I watch it I get emotional at the end, not crying mind you but a lump in my throat.
I liked
The Recruit
Barbershop
DareDevil
Looking forward to
2F2F (hides face)
The Italian Job
The Hulk
Hated
Too Many to list
When I saw black hawk down I thought Ridley Scott had sold out and made a pile of American flag waving bilge. :D
Private Ryan on the other hand was much more subtle with the flag waving and I felt it and the follow up series band of brothers was fantastic.
I was in shock during the beach landing in the cinema it was so horrific yet real. Films like that only work on a big screen when viewed on a telly if lacked the sam imapct.
I havent seen band of brothers, private ryan was good too
The thing about Black hawk was it wasnt completely true, there was Air Force guys on the black hawks too.
I just avoid the high profile big hollywood releases, they are all sh1te in general. Did like Gangs of New York though (sorry andyf)
watch out for '25th hour' saw it in LA earlier in the year. Edward Norton is just superb as an actor and a director in any of his films
heard that the guru was good, so rented it but wasn't that impressed......
brought enemy of the state of ebay the other day.....
went and saw anger management and have to say i like it, but adam sandler is funny.....
They kinda forgot about the huge civillian casualties they inflicted too and the fact it was actually a BLUNDER not a heroic fight. At least that what the vets say about the event a cluster **** was the term used lol.

..yep as suspected this topic has dominated my thoughts for much of the morning. Damn! almost as bad as doing top fives...how many sleepless nights?
Anyhoo, I go to the cinema quite a lot and it's rather telling - quite alarming actually - that despite the frequency I'm having real difficulty recalling a recent film that was innovative, intelligent or simply memorable!
I must admit to liking 25th Hour tho. The film isn't without its flaws (the whole two towers reference...totally unnecessary IMHO) but Ed Norton was just superb and the subject matter (regret) very thought provoking.
I'm with Vez tho' and reckon that, as with most things, the enjoyment/pleasure you derive from a situation can generally be measured by your level of expectation. If you go and see Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock in "2 weeks notice" do you expect something innovative and intelligent? If you go and see an adaptation of a Nick Hornby novel (even one featuring John Cusack mmmmmmm ;)) do you expect it to be even fractionally as good as the book?
Random musings;
Moulin Rouge WORKED
Chicago DID NOT (probably the worst movie I've ever seen)
Gladiator! WHY?
Sci-fi and fantasy I DON'T DO 'EM
I'm going now. :D
See, Exactly what I said, give or take a few words ;)
Great minds think a like :D
Sci-Fi can be ace when done properly :p
I like realism in films tho. I like it when things adhere to the laws of physics and so on. The minute I usually get pissed off with a film is when someone does something impossible.
James bonds last few being a prime example.
Oh and 2 Weeks notice was good fun but I think Poo grant is a tw*t and certainly shouldn't be coping off with a someone with that much class. :jealous:
Get back to your LA hookers grant leave the decent women alone ! :o
Have to admit the last bond film was pants...
But Tommorow Never Dies was and is ACE!
u cud see some of the fcuk ups in the cgi on die another day, what was impossible on it?
I'd really like to see some books turned into movies. If they are as faithful as the Jurassic Park book->film transition was, they'd be winners.
I have a pair of sci-fi trilogies at home which would be cracking, although I don't think a film would do them justice - perhaps a high-budget mini series :)

The last one where its all ice and stuff. He gets chased by the laser beem and then jumps of some mad cliff then all of a sudden its
SURFS UP DUDE as he crests some tidal wave on a surf board lol
err NO ! NO NO NO NO
I would like to see the following sci-fi themes made into a film and if anyone gets this I will be amazed.
Legionaires astartes
;)
Is that something to do with the Warhammer 40k universe?

Got to agree with Lenagh, recent films do seem to be fairly dull. Probably the best film Ive seen recently was Road to Perdition. It had its flaws but Tom Hanks was absolutely superb. Another goody is K-Pax. LOTR1 was excellent, LOTR2 less so.
Bad recent films... XXX, Life of David Gale, Signs.
Seeing as The Italian Job has been mentioned...... from what I understand the remake is set in the US so why the hell is it called The Italian Job, I think Hollywood has missed the point of the title a touch.

Wondered about that myself......
"Hey man, you were only supposed to blow the God damn doors off dude"
I think there is an example of what's wrong with movies, the business has gone ultra conservative and is reluctant to make anything new so they are sticking to remakes and sequels. It really does take the piss when you get a film like X-Men which was basically a long trailer for X-Men 2
Can't remember the last film I saw and thought "bloody hell that was great" Possibly the Shawshank Redemption, and I think that's because I knew nothing about it so I was surprised, instead of having watched all the hype for weeks on end and then realising that all the best bits of the film had been shown in the trailers. The Maltese Falcon was another one that surprised me, I watched it 'cos there was nothing else on and ended up really enjoying it
