View Full Version : Weight training supplements
Basically, which are effective, value for money supplements and which are a waste of money
I'm getting some impact whey protein from myprotein, and was looking at creatine etyyl ester pils, l-glutamine and bcaa's. MRP and thermogenics also crossed my mind.
Has anyone had any good gains from any of the above, and when/how often would you suggest to use?
I'm cutting for the next 6 weks to lower bf%, my diet is sorted, 500 cals deficit per day, 1.2g of protein per lb of bw, 20% fat and the rest made up of carbs. I was thinking of using the anabolic diet "just" for 6 weeks to help burn bf .
After 6 weeks i will be trying build muscle and size.

Should last me a while :wack:
You can't go wrong with protein, l-glutamine and bcaas. As in the PM, I can't be arsed with creatine anymore, although it has proven to be very effective.
You could give ZMAs a go. Not sure of their overall effectiveness, but they do make for some deep sleep and crazy dreams!
Sounds like you've got your diet sorted. Maybe worth timing your carb intake around your workout? Most before, with a bit straight after? Since I've moved the majority of my carbs to the first half of the day (bar my pwo shake with carbs), I've noticed bodyfat drop quite rapidly (I'm a bit endomorphic, so I struggle to cut fat).

The zma's sounds like the night after a mad weekend :wack:
Thanks again for the recommendations

This has been covered quite a few times if you do a search.....
Don't bother looking at creatine if you are cutting up/trimming as you won't see any benefit!
Most creatine products do fook all....it just makes your body think you can push a shite tonne more weight because you are taking this spoecial pill/powder....Unless you go pretty hardcore on the stuff there is no point. Creatine is a waste of money....you are just allowing your muscle cells to absorb more and more water, making you look bigger but also creating stretch marks...mmmm, nice! Plus you pi55 every 10 mins as you have to double your water intake!
I use Boditronics express whey protein....it is a low fat high calorie whey powder that tastes awesome and has helped me with repair/growth without getting bloated or podgy.....
If you are seriously cutting up then look at acai pills. They are a natural blend of the acai-blahblahrestofthenameislong....berries, green tea extract and a host of other natural ingredients that were first designed to support your bodies health/immune system but when coupled with gym/excercise were found to aid in rapidly trimming fat off and around muscle tissue...
They are like £24 for a pot but I have a few gym mates that take them and noticed the changes in a few weeks as well as feeling better as it acts like a multivitamin I think.....
If ou are trying to cut body fat for 6 weeks I wouldn't be taking any extra protein at all....

i found impact whey protein just gave me a massive belly so switched onto whey isolate.
i had good results from bcca's but have just switched over to hmb.
id recomend taking a good multivitamin some gluecostamin sulphate an some decent fish oil.i recently got some super omega 3 from MP it seems good stuff but you end up doing fishy burps for a while after eating one!.
id recomend getting some of the mixing juggs from MP if you dont already have some the little spring mixs em up a treat.

The only supplements PROVEN to work are Protein, Creatine and HMB. I have found the key to fat loss AND muscle growth is Diet. My diet cuts out all carbs 5 days a week, then you have a 2 day carb up period. In 2 months i have lost a stone and a half in bodyweight, and increased lean muscle size and strength. As example, i could deadlift max 160kg. Now i can do 200kg. And i will add that i have not been supplementing anything apart from fish oil, multi vits and chromium.

Acai capsules?

I'm thinking of trying that AB diet with no carbs for 5 days and two days of carbs for my cut. I will see how i get on with it, and if good, maybe decide to use it to get a clean bulk after.
what would be one of the better brands of HMB, and where's good to get them from? Same for multi vits and fish oil.
I heard about acai berries, but is there any evidence to prove acai berry's really work other then the companies that are trying to sell it?
Thanks for all the input and helpfull advice

Yes there is proof....Quite a few hollywood types take/took it....BradPitt took them for trimming in fight club and many of the cast of Troy and 300.
Its not actually talked about that much hence why they used to give out free trial samples to try and spread the word :)
Still no reply from my mate but will check back tomorrow...

No carbs at all? Do you not feel like death? How many grams of carbs do you have on the weekend? Do you not take a recovery shake with simple carbs after training?

I am allowed no more than 30g's of carbs a day. I get those with a bit of milk in tea and broccoli, spinach etc I had to do a 12 day start phase with no carbs to get the body into Ketosis, then start a 5 day 2 day cycle. I felt like death for the 12 days, and was weak for a month. But now i have LOADS of energy and strength has never been so good. As for carbs at the weekend, i do not count them, i try to get good complex carbs in. Lots of veg, fruit and grains
