View Full Version : My 150km Bike Road Trip

Hey All,

I would like let you all know about an idea I had one day.

Background

I live in Israel and have been cycling for 1 year. I usually cycle on mixed terrain, but mainly on the road.
Most weekends, I cycle up and down mountains in and around the Jersualem area.

Cycling seems routine now. I just cycle because I enjoy it, and it keeps me fairly heathly (or allows me to drink more beer :D) I don't want to start getting bored of it, so I need something to aim for.

My personal goal is to cycle from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and back to Tel Aviv in one trip, no staying over night, cycle there, have a rest for a bit (max couple of hours) and cycle back.

Looking at the route on google maps, the total distance I would cover is 135km.

Have a look at the route on the map below

<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&amp;source=s_d&amp;saddr=Meir+Ya'ari%2F%E2%80%AB% D7%9E%D7%90%D7%99%D7%A8+%D7%99%D7%A2%D7%A8%D7%99%E 2%80%AC%E2%80%8E&amp;daddr=31.895631,35.056+to:Lehi%2F %E2%80%AB%D7%9C%D7%97%22%D7%99%E2%80%AC%E2%80%8E&amp;h l=en&amp;geocode=FcHN6QEddc0SAg%3B%3BFfw65QEdhqkZAg&amp;mr a=dpe&amp;mrcr=0&amp;mrsp=1&amp;sz=11&amp;via=1&amp;sll=31.889219,35.0 6218&amp;sspn=0.293253,0.44014&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=31.889219,35 .06218&amp;spn=0.293253,0.44014&amp;t=p&amp;output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&amp;source=embed&amp;saddr=Meir+Ya'ari%2F%E2%80%A B%D7%9E%D7%90%D7%99%D7%A8+%D7%99%D7%A2%D7%A8%D7%99 %E2%80%AC%E2%80%8E&amp;daddr=31.895631,35.056+to:Lehi% 2F%E2%80%AB%D7%9C%D7%97%22%D7%99%E2%80%AC%E2%80%8E &amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=FcHN6QEddc0SAg%3B%3BFfw65QEdhqkZAg&amp; mra=dpe&amp;mrcr=0&amp;mrsp=1&amp;sz=11&amp;via=1&amp;sll=31.889219,35 .06218&amp;sspn=0.293253,0.44014&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=31.889219, 35.06218&amp;spn=0.293253,0.44014&amp;t=p" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

As you can see, as you approach Jersualem (B on the map), the terrain becomes quite hilly.

Does anyone know how I can plot this route on a graph that shows the gradient of the hills?

I currently have a mountain bike, but I don't think I will be able to complete this trip using a mountain bike, so I will be buying a decent road bike within the next couple of months my budget will be about £1000.

I will also have to create a training program, but ive never attempted anything like this before.
What I will start to do, is drive towards where the hills begin and begin my cycle ride from there.. whilst increasing my distance over time.

I will attempt this challenge on Saturday 18th September 2010. The reason why, is because Israel celebrates Yom Kippur. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yom_Kippur
About 99% of people in Israel honour this day and no one drives anywhere. It is amazing, because everyone gets on their bike and cycles around their home roads and onto motorways, without fear of a car speeding towards them.
I believe this will be the best date, since there will no traffic.

There is one issue.. The local temperature.
In September, by midday the temperature will reach 35deg.

Thanks Graham.:wack:

I have asked other people here if they will join me and funnily enough, no one has responded. :wack:

Put it this way, a 1.4 Golf with 4 people in it struggles to get up some of the hills

I will have to climb these on my bike:nod:

Nice plan :)

You should be able to do that on a mountain bike - at most just stick some skinny road tyres on it. I've done the london to brighton a few times on a mountain bike with absolutely no problems, and in my youth did a 100 mile ride on full mud tyres :wack:

I've got a set of 1" specialized skinny tyres - they roll just as well as a road bike does.

If anything, if the hills are properly steep, the MTB will have a better range of gears :) £40 on decent tyres and £960 left on beer :D

Hi Jon,

Im interested in this, I was just going to buy a road bike, purely because the distance seems so much to me at the moment, and figured that a mountain bike would be so much harder.

I currently own a Scott Scale 50 XXL. - So you think I will be able to buy a decent pair of wheels and just swap them?

Yeah - I'd have thought so. That looks like a reasonably light XC machine, it's not like it's a monster travel DH bike - as it's got suspension and is a bit more rugged than a racer it's going to be a shade heavier, but there would certainly be nothing stopping you from swapping the wheels/tyres and using it on road :) Dunno what the roads are like outside the cities but front sus may be an advantage :) Unless you are really going for it it's unlikely you will run out of gears either :)

I didn't even bother with a second set of wheels - I swapped the tyres over for a few weeks then back again :)

You sir, are mad :notworthy:

although if i was fitter i would secretly enjoy something like this

Yom Kippur falls on my birthday, is it the same date every year?

1. No eating and drinking
2. No wearing of leather shoes
3. No bathing or washing
4. No anointing oneself with perfumes or lotions
5. No marital relations
6. No dealing with money

Not facying any of that, especially on my birthday :wack: :D

Does the Scott have disc brakes? If it does you could get a good set of proper road 700c sized rims built onto a set of mountain bike hubs and fit a closer ratio rear cassette. This will help Keep your gearing up.
If you've never covered that many kms start increasing the length of your training runs but without straying too far, you don't want to have 30 k to get home when you hit the wall/get the knock/bonk whatever you you want to call it. When I had been cycling for about a year my boss took me on a 125 mile run one sunday and up to then 50miles had been my max but I was young and stupid and although fit died a thousand deaths about 85 miles into the run. On the last climb all I remember is sitting at the edge of the road eating cube after cube from a unmade jelly while guys who I had sped away from hours ago road past as fresh as a daisy, one of them was 81 years old.:o Also in 35 degree of heat your gonna need to carry alot of fluids which might be a problem, a Camelbak and a few bottles and be prepared for hot drinks, yum. Other than that energy gels/bars etc. and a big pasta dinner the night before or somethoing with loads of carbs.

Cool - I will check and see whats available. I think its going to be better if I buy a second set of wheels, so I can swap the tyres within minutes, if I fancy doing off-road on road trips.

Yep, my scott does have disc brakes. Im not sure what you mean re: 700c rims built onto a set of MK hubs?
Water will be a major issue. Ive got a camelpack with 3l water capacity, but I think I will need to install the water bottle mounts on my bike, as a reserve..

700c wheels are one of the road bike sizes - if you get MTB disk hubs with 700c rims you will have a much larger choice of tyres :)

Try Chainreaction or Wiggle - but they don't seem to have much in the way of 700c stuff...

dobergoose
26-04-2010, 15:20
Not sure if you will get lightweight 700c rims built on mtb hubs,be more hybrid stuff with pretty wide rims. The wheel combo I was suggesting would probably need to be made to order. Not sure how good your roads are but a 700 x 23c tyre is best for decent surfaces, put about 130psi in them. the 23 being mm wide roughly. If the roads are crap, go wider.

Another thing is if you do get wheels get out and do a few miles berfore you do the actual trip, new wheels will settle in and any decent wheelbuilder will offer a free true up after a few hundred miles.

I do go on a bit once I get started but I think thats cause I ran a shop for about 10 years before chucking it to just build wheels for a few years.

dobergoose
26-04-2010, 15:24
Just thought of another thing, try and get the same hubs you have on your mtb wheels as another model/brand may move the position of the brake disc over either direction meaning every time you swapped wheels you might have to re-space the caliper. Either that or see if your local shop or friends will let your try their hub in your frame to see if the disc lines up.

I tried playing around with google earth yesterday.

Ive plotted the route, but the route automatically selects the quickest route, but this isnt the route I want to take which is quite annoying..

Once Ive plotted the route, how do you create the route into a plotted graph showing gradient?:o

Just out of interest, how safe is it as when I went to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, we went through the West Bank.

If it is no problem, would be a beautiful bike ride :)

Failing that, I'd probably get myself down to Mike's Place instead and feast on one of their Bacon and Cheese Burgers :D

There are two main roads that go from Jerusalem and Tel Aviv - Route 1 and Route 443.

Route 443 is faster, but on a very rare occasion you get the odd stone thrown at you.
You also have to go through a checkpoint each way.
Route 1 is longer, but no checkpoints.

I had a chat with the security here, and they said it wasnt an issue.

One of my mates wants a photo with me and the checkpoint guards when I arrive :wack:

I will be taking photos during my ride :)

So Ive started my training...

I did a 55km bike ride on 2 1/2ltrs of water over mainly flat terrain with about 9km off road.
I need to start drinking less water and train my body to survive with less water if I am going to make the distance of 75km without the ability to refuel on the trip.

However after the 55km ride, 2 Major problems noted.

1 - Knees! They hurt like hell afterwards? I was pushing it towards the end, but when I attempt the hills on the 150km ride, its only going to get worse - Should I buy some kind of strap support? The muscles around the knees hurt a bit, but muscle fatique wasnt the issue.

2 - Saddle sore - It wasnt pleasant down there :hurl: - Any advice, because it wasnt nice and I only covered 55km. I'd hate to think what it would look like after 150km!
Maybe buying a more comfty seat? Creams?

Get a decent saddle (wide is not good), decent cycling shorts and if you want chamois cream - I use chamois cream on some of my shorts but it depends on what the chamois is made of whether I bother.

cream (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Udderly_Smooth_Chamois_Cream/5360036098/)

On the knee front - firstly don't try and up the mileage too quickly, knee pain is fairly common early in the season. Make sure you have your saddle height set correctly, too low and you'll be putting unnecessary strain on your knees

I cycled from Cornwall to Bristol in a day about 120miles or 192km and my knees were wrecked, still are a bit.

The best thing is to get some pedals and shoes that clip together. It corrects the posture of your knees when cycling. Ensures your foot is flat so removes the pressure from the knee joint. Somethng likethat anyway

Quick update.

I purchased a Fuji Roubaix 2.0 road bike for the occasion. Its a pretty good bike, medium components all round:thumbs:

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fuji/roubaix-20-2010-road-bike-ec022171?query=Fuji%202.0

I have also purchased some shoes with the clip on attachment that attaches to the pedals, so hopefully this will help take some of the strain away.

I will be taking the following:

4x inner tubes
2x puncture repair kits
1x pump
4.5l of water
2l of isotonic drink
6-7 pinches of salt in a bag
2x bananas
1x bag of assorted dried fruit
4x energy bars
4x Instant Goo.
1x pot of chamois cream

Just been reading up on the weather and its going to be hitting 27deg by 09:00hrs. So I will begin the cycle ride at 04:30hrs to avoid most of the midday sun for the return journey.

Do you think I will need anything else?

Just trying to get my head around it, as the bike ride is this Saturday!!

You've bought clipless pedals and you are doing the ride Saturday?

Ok. You'll need:

Cameras for the other people you are with. You WILL fall off sideways swearing when you come to a stop and are unable to unclick the first few times. And then randomly when you need to unclip and try to do so without remembering that you are attached - you'll pull your foot back not twist...

Plasters. See above ;)

I'd also spend a bit of time making sure that you have the cleats on the shoes aligned perfectly - if you get them out of line it's hell on your knees. You may also find that the muscle just above your knee (bulgy bit just above your kneecap) aches like hell for the first few hard rides - it seems to be a muscle you don't use normally but when you pull up on the pedals it's the one that gets hammered :)

I wouldn't have thought you'd need the salt - the isotonic / energy stuff and fruit would have enough in? But you are the expert on the requirements for the climate out there, not me :)

Good luck :)

LOL - Ive riden the bike a few times with the clip on's and have already fallen off :wack:
Ive adjusted the pedal so its almost at the end, so the shoes falls out quite quickly and smoothly.

I asked around to find if someone would do the trip with me and everyone has said I am mental.. even the guys I go cycling with on a Saturday said I am mental, so I will be doing the trip on my own, with no support at all. Even if I get into trouble, no one can pick me up because driving is banned until dusk.. so I have to be careful when I do the ride.
I will be bringing a camera to take some pics because the scenario en route is amazing

That muscle (the bit above my knee) is pretty developed, don't know why, as I have only riden the bike with the clip on's a few times??

Im going to take a small bag of salt, because I will be sweating like hell, it can't hurt to have salt that I can put in the water if needs be.

Should it good, but the hardest part will be the mental challenge of climbing the bloody hills! I drove the route I am going to cycle the other day, and its a LONG way

I'd say that's pretty risky / foolish :( All you need is something to happen and you are pretty stuffed then - snap a chain (don't see magic links listed in your kit? get some...), break a mech or anything mechanical that goes wrong that can't be fixed at the roadside and you are buggered, out in the heat. Or worse you fall off / get cramp / whatever and you don't have anyone to help :(

First time I went out on clipless pedals (the original shimano SPDs, when they'd only just come out. Must be close to 20 years ago now  ) I was riding round the middle of Penzance - down the front trying to look cool. Stop at the lights... Errr.. feckfeckfeckfeckfeckthud as I stopped, couldn't unclip and went over sideways in front of everyone :indiff:

You are right, it is pretty risky, if I have a problem, then I am stuck, but touch wood, my bike is pretty much brand new having only travelled 60km (run in period). - Im going to take it to a bike shop I trust on Friday to have a quick one over, just to be on the safe side.
I will also get the special tool and chain links, just incase.

I don't intend on falling off, because due to the distance, its going to be slow slow slow until I feel comfortable with the road surface and handling.

Ive also installed the special rubber inlay that lays between the tyre and the inner tube for that extra protection against punctures.

At the end of the day, worse case senario and I am stuck, I walk to the nearest petrol garage and wait for them to open.

Looking at the route on google maps, the total distance I would cover is 135km.

F*ck that! That to me is the equivalent of waking up one day and thinking you know what id quite like to get bummed today.

I wouldnt even consider this on a motorbike let alone a push rod! Good luck fella, you must be mad

Ahh - OK. It sounded like it was a barren wasteland you were riding across, not that there were going to be petrol stations etc ;)

You say barren wasteland, have you ever travelled to Israel ;)

During my ride, nothing will be open.. until the following evening... so if I do encounter problems, then I will have to wait until the following evening to sort them out, so barren wasteland is kinda true...
BUT - its a dual carriageway that I will be travelling on, so there will be a few stops to chill out on... more interestingly, I have to cross an Israeli armed checkpoint... That should be fun :wack::thumbs:

Yes ;) Went to Tel Aviv with work about 10 years ago ;) I didn't realise it was a dual carriageway, thought it was more dusty tracks than that :)

Route 443 from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.. when I say Dual Carriageway, I mean it has 2 lanes... the amount of pot holes and uneven surfaces probably classes as a dusty track :wack:

Im just arranging my Ipod... got to put abut 8-10hrs of some upbeat music..

Any suggestions?

Do you have proper 'cycle clothing' that's been well used? That's a long way to go and find you're rubbing somewhere you don't want to be rubbed :wack: .

Cheers guys... it was bloody hard, considering the temps were topping 28deg on the way back, plus a horrible head wind from Jerusalem all the way back to Tel Aviv.

Just uploading some pics now

Ash - It was quite funny when I cycled past the Israeli checkpoint, I slowed down to show them my ID, but they didn't seem bothered. - I checked with our security manager when I arrived in Jerusalem, and he said, that they probably thought I was some kind of non-palestinian nutter :wack:

Ok here we go..

This is all the equipment that I was taking for the trip

and this point, my muscles really started to ache... but I had to push through it, no one around to assist me.. so I put my some angry rap music! Thank you Eminem

Down hill section coming up!

30km until I reach Tel Aviv - Yay - but Im hurting quite a bit now

<a href="http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/?action=view&current=IMG_1947.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/IMG_1947.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Great.. another hill

<a href="http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/?action=view&current=IMG_1948.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/IMG_1948.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

This is the last of the downhills... (this is the same hill as the first one I posted in my earlier post)

<a href="http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/?action=view&current=IMG_1950.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/IMG_1950.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

at the bottom, and its almost straight for Tel Aviv - This is called the Ayalon, its similar to a motorway, except, the traffic travels on the wrong side of the road :wack:

<a href="http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/?action=view&current=IMG_1951.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/IMG_1951.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

It just seems to continue forever... notice the other cyclist.. we had a little race from the downhill section.. and I beat him :wack:

<a href="http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/?action=view&current=IMG_1952.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/IMG_1952.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

A quick photo I took from a bridge over looking another motor way stretch... its amazing to see all the road deserted, almost like a horror film (28 days later!!)

<a href="http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/?action=view&current=IMG_1953.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/IMG_1953.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Quick rest under a bridge.. the temps were hitting around 29-30deg now, and its about 13:00hrs

<a href="http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/?action=view&current=IMG_1956.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/IMG_1956.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The last road until I get home...

<a href="http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/?action=view&current=IMG_1958.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n220/TAS1980/Bike%20Ride2/IMG_1958.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

What a ride!!

Total distance - 135.9km
Time taken - 6hr 32mins

I am pretty impressed with myself considering that I didn't really train for this.

I also took far too much stuff with me, in the opening photo, you can see how much stuff I took. For the entire ride (there and back) I only consumed

4x bananas
2x energy bars
1x redbull
7ltrs of water

Next time I will know not to carry so much stuff with me.. because I reckon I could get that time down.. If I didn't have the extra weight, and the horrible headwind on the way back, I reckon I would be looking at 6hrs or maybe a bit less
Not bad, when you consider that it takes just over 2.5hrs to drive the route in a car:thumbs:

Anyways... 12hrs later and i'm sore pretty much everywhere, but the legs and shoulders hurt the most.

Would I do it again.......

FCUK YEAH :smitten:

Nice ride, well done :) Roads looks sweet, reminds me of when I cycled to the arctic circle when in sweden with work (took my bike as I was training for IM). Only took the one crappy phone pic to prove I'd done it, I had a headwind all the way there but tailwind on the ride home made up for it
