View Full Version : my garage scalextric layout - work-in-progress
so - inspired by 30psi's efforts the other night i've reclaimed our garage for my Scalextric:)
and this is the layout:) few troubleshooting bits to do but it's working well atm.

spec - mostly Scalextric Sport track, but the snowy bit is SCX, with alluminium rails so the magnets on the cars don't work, and a slippy surface. it's ace fun, and a bit of a challenge:)
to-do list:
- optimize the track so as many cars as poss work with it.
- sort a timing setup
- tidy the crap up so i can get the cars on display
- maybe make it a bit more scenic
- more cars:)
it's ages since i've played with this gubbins and it's really nice to return to it:)
off to www.pendleslotracing.com this weekend to see what's available and new:) the shopping list keeps getting bigger though:(
i'll try to keep this thread updated as i go on
:D
this looks awesome!!!
Do you need to have kids before you can go buy Scalextric ??? :(
Do you need to have kids before you can go buy Scalextric ??? :(
 i accumulated all that track (and most of the cars) before the kids came along:o
Sweet was worried I had to knock someone up!!! :wack:
Is there issues if you have a really long track and power etc???

gone - Martin (30psi) has had it i think. anyway, any more track and i'd be breaking out of the space i have:)

not really - atm i've got a short circuit somewhere which needs sorting, but that can happen whatever the length of the track, just if it's longer there's a bigger area to search for the problem. it's drive-roundable though:)
having said that i am running separate power supplies for each lane. you can add power supplies as track gets bigger:)

aaah I see :(
in terms of more track though, would multi level work? that'd be a good challenge to get it from the floor to chest height or something and then back down again, could build it up like a road thats going up the side of a mountain or something

Pikes Peak style - that'd be utterly immense:eek: you've sowed the seeds of a brilliant idea, but i need to sort what i have for now:)

Yeah you can do all sorts of stuff with the track. Did anyone see that programme James May did where they rebuilt the old Brooklands race circuit (full size!) using scalextric? That went over fences, up to the second floor of a building, through drains, over a lake... It was awesome!

Scalextric hill climb challenge anyone !!
Sometimes i really hate this forum lol this is going to cost me money :(
Cool. Some interesting sidings to that track. Are they a part of the track themselves or do they clip on the side?
I have 170 pieces in my circuit, so at the furthest point from the power source you have 85 track joins which all add resistance. Some joins were awful, some pieces were shorting between the tracks so it took some time to sort.
Using 2 power supplies worked a bit, but now its ok on one. Last change was to use 4 old controllers and creating jumper leads from further point to near the power supply to boost power. If all the track was new I doubt you'd have any problems with the track joins. Some of my track is 20+ years old.
lol. Scalextric in the garage, so Jaaaaaaaaaaaag lives in the drive

that's pretty impressive, but would also need a fair bit of work:eek: Mrs B's dad has a very impressive scenic railway which he's been working on since he retired - model railways are easier to make scenic though as they're much smaller scale
Vidal mentioned hillclimbs - i'm hoping to do a layout based on Prescott for a compy at this years weekender:).
Cool. Some interesting sidings to that track. Are they a part of the track themselves or do they clip on the side?
they clip on - with the 'sport' track Scalextric moved from barriers dead on the track to extending it a bit so the cars in the outside lane go a bit more sideways and it works well. the black ones are from a drifty set, and the others are standard issue accessories:)
counted my track bits - 60 - so it's a third the size of yours
lol. Scalextric in the garage, so Jaaaaaaaaaaaag lives in the drive
Jaaaaaaaggg has always lived on the drive:) the garage was for Mrs B's car - now she's got the Rav it's a bit more of a squeeze so i've reclaimed it:).
however, there's a bit of the Jag in the garage currently in the form of that wheel in the corner:) sidewall punctures are sh1te:annoyed:

I think the Scalextric bug may be catching :D

I sorted out my Uncle's laptop and as payment he gave me a box of Scalextric track :). Gave me an idea that i should dig out all my old track from my mum's and see what i can do. The GF is not best pleased with me, but boys will be boys.
This is the space it will be fitting into (roughly 4metres square) in my loft:

Lol, i shall have to sort out getting a good plan of the track :D
In the meantime i decided to just sort of put a load of track together and see what happened:

Given it a test run and seems pretty good, one lane is slightly easier than the other but overall quite even. My siser and I raced the 2 porsches and was pretty cool, the cats didnt really know what to make of it all :wack:
Feck that is impressive!
I never had scalextrics :( had some crappy train thingy that my sister accidentally trod on and broke.

I am thinking one of the SXOC meets may be a BBQ and Scalextric events
Thanks for the comments guys, will see how it fairs with some proper racing and then think about trying to make a 4 laner :D (need a lot more track though, mainly inner and outer curves)
I've still got mine out :D

30 Psi = You sir are a legend :notworthy:thumbs:
What we need to do at the Weekender is everyone to get together with their track and recreate the Ring, has this ever been done before with Scalextrics :D
That track is mental Martin :D
thats is truely worth of a king
Martin - please please please tell me you have two low profile wireless cams and race from the comfort of the sofa ?!??!?
:D:D:D
That has come to mind to be honest, but I haven't looked in to it. I wouldn't mind getting oen of those keyring cameras on the cars though.
I was tempted to make the track bigger and get the track in to the bedrooms. I'd have to take the bedroom doors off though and plane the bottoms by 5mm so I can shut the doors above the track :wack:

Just to bring this back to the top :D, are there any online retailers you would suggest getting bits and pieces of Scalextric from?
I am looking on the bay of e and found quite a bit but just wondering if there is anywhere that specialises in it?
Cheers :)

Where did you get that single lane track from?
Where did you get that single lane track from?
scx crono rally stage:) allows the track to be run as a single loop time-trial thingy. needs an SCX power supply and controller for the timer to work though. bear with me, i'll find a link:)
edit - here's the chap http://slotcarnews.blogspot.com/2007/11/scx-rally-chrono-pack.html
mine came from www.pendleslotracing.com :)
i'm fairly sure you can get other single lane-stuff too from SCX and scalextric

That is very very cool that Prescott track :D
Buying new bits certainly is addictive, lol, have pretty much doubled my car collection in 1 week and still on the look out for more :) (won an early 90s style Benetton last night for £9).
Have taken all the track up in preparation for tonight where i hope to get the 4 laner sorted and got a couple of friends coming round to help test it out.
Gonna be a top weekend :)

Colin McRaes own Escort mk2. as driven in the Manx rally. each model even includes a spare set of silver wheels on another axle as he ran white and silver wheels in that rally
both limited editions, the dirty one only available bought with the clean one.
bit of footage of the man himself in action in the real car - the second vid with pure in-car is a real treat:)
