thought someone on here might know how hot pc's can get while being safe, my xp2000 has been getting to about 56c in the hot weather we are having with a case temp of 38c . is that ok? that is while running, black hawk down delta force. which is a wicked game i might add.

i read somewhere that 73 is not unusual but not very good either mine always runs at 5o odd and has been fine
56c is a bit hot but nothing to worry about.
As a general rule, if the CPU heatsink isn't hot enough to hurt you, it's ok.
Mine CPU 58 and case 41.
Have got 2 7200 drives 2 cd's and loads of pc cards and 2 80mm fans.
Realy would like it cooler , but not without spending big bucks and it runs fine as it is.

boil an egg = bad
freeze your vodka solid = bad
somewhere in the middle = better
;)
wrong starion!
freeze your vodka solid = very good and quite desirable.
as long as its in a condensation free environment :)

Mr F has a point.
But not that good for your PC... THe processor perhaps, but surely not the peripherals...

Perfectly possible to seriously cool the CPU but leave the rest of the case at room temp.
Kingdeacon: My 2100XP used to go up to 55C after a good fragging session, and idled at 50C, this in a Coolermaster case with a silent CM heatsink (so not as cool as the usual 'sounds-like-Concorde-taking-off-it's-so-loud CM heatsink I had to get rid of before I went deaf). Ran fine, never had any worries from it.
Since switching to a P4 though I've noticed dramatically lower CPU temps, and after having just spent about 3 hrs solid playing UT2k3, even on a baking hot day like this my CPU temp is under 45C, and usually idles below 40C, again with the low-rpm silent CM heatsink.

An old k6-200 that I had regularily ran at 65 degrees. Still runs fine now after god knows how many years.

Hmmmm... nice tan? :p ;) :D

:p I'd spent most of the day in the blazing sun doing garden stuff, so coming in and having a good fragging session while supping a chilled beer was well justified in my opinion :wack:

you guys are not going to believe me but my P3 clocked to 1.4 GHz runs at between 12 - 15 :D
Si :)
Some good-quality water cooling then?
Have to say, I'm not into overclocking in the slightest, I prefer to simply buy faster bits, but some of the o/c stuff these days really is top-notch looking stuff. I'm always impressed by people who can make something slow actually perform respectably. Eh Steve. ;)

No just 4x80mm delta fans bring air into the case, tubed up to the heat sink. With an oversized copper heatsink, then 2x80mm deltas removing hot air from the case. plus the 60mm delta on the heatsink.
Not really into that stuff, just needed to see what could be done :) Kinda wish I had not done it now, as the bloody thing gives me a head ache  Sounds like a jet fighter

Hmm, not sure about your temp reading then, as AFAIK it's not possible to get below ambient temp just using fans. Especially not down to those sort of temps, and *especially* when the CPU is overcocked. Could be wrong though, as like I say, not into all that, but thermodynamics makes me think I'm not...

I have no idea either keith thats just what my bios tells me, though my copper heatsink is about the site of a tennis ball :)

I too doubt you could get temps down that low. Where are you reading the tempreture from? BIOS or some motherboard program?
Like chappy says, it's impossible to get a chip running cooler than the air that's blowing onto the heatsink. otherwise we'd be able to make Ice from blowing 10oC air onto water.. hmm bad example maybe :D
I'm a bit fan of P4's also... hyperthreading is the way forward people! :)
Just read your BIOS post. Erm silly question, but you're not switching it on, pressing DEL to enter BIOS and looking from cold are you? You'll need to do some CPU bashing (like running a game) to get the true tempreture, as just entering the BIOS doesn't need or use the processor at all.
Cheers..

BIOS matey, though the whole computers a hack so not sure about how much I should be reading into that. All I will say is that I also have a P4 1.8 here and this little thing kicks it ass!
I am going to restart in a minute and check it, its been running all day doing photoshop work so it should be up to temp... should check my EGT guage :D :D :D

OK just restart the PC the BIOS is giving me a reading of 19... thats with half adays artworking of half gig photoshop files behind me. Now is the PC cool or just giving out funny readings?
SI :)
Fitted a 40mm fan inside my headunit yesterday as well, much cooler then it normaly is, bit noisey so have ordered a silent one.

Cookie I have 5 (Soon to be 3 :( ) 80mm deltas sucking and blowing ohh errr though it does make the blitz sound quite!
Si :)
In your headunit ?
Also have an 80mm in the AMP (Not very silent yet)

Your reading is almost certianly wrong. Might be a dodgy thermostate connection to the CPU? You should be looking at around 30-40oC for a PIII not overclocked. A few servers are running at this in an Air Conditioned room here, and are more than happy (20oC room)
Start worrying when your CPU's creap around 60-70oC, or set your BIOS to shut down the PC to save your CPU from melting. Although I think even Athlons have thermal protection on them nowadays?
You could try updating your BIOS to sort your readng prroblems..
cheers

Bugger it I might as well rebuild the thing as well as doing the BIOS :) ... if it helps I have 5 of these sucking and blowing on my heatsink
Delta 80mm Fan (SHE) (FG-001-DE)
An ultra-high performance 80mm case fan pushing a staggering 68.51CFM. Not the quietest fan in the world but certainly one of the best - 68.51CFM, 4900RPM, 48.5dBA. Please note - DO NOT CONNECT THIS FAN DIRECTLY TO YOUR MOTHERBOARD. Its current draw is high enough to damage the motherboard fan headers. Only connect this fan to a compatible thermal control unit such as the Digi-Doc 5 (available from the Overclocking Accessories Section) or directly to your PSU via a 3-pin to 4-pin converter (not supplied). MODEL: FFB0812SHE
- Speed - 4900RPM
- Output - 68.51CFM
- Decibels - 48.5dBA
- Dimensions - 80x80x38
on one of these on my copper heatsink
Delta offer more performance than anyone thought possible with the new 60mm Focussed Flow Fan. Pushing an incredible 50.15CFM the Delta 60mm Focussed Flow Fan offers the highest cooling performance currently available. Please note - this fan is not quiet! MODEL: FFB0612EHE
- Speed - 8000RPM
- Output - 50.15 CFM
- Decibels - 54.5dBA
- Dimensions - 60x60x38

Bloody hell! You must be deaf with all those Delta's! I used to run a Globalwin FOP38 HSF and that drove me mad enough on it's own to change it, along with the YS-Tech case fans, all to something quieter. I'd suggest a set of protective ear muffs like the workies wear before yours ears start bleeding!
On the subject of temps, I'd say 60 deg C is the upper safe limit for reliable sustained operation.

Yep it does my head in, thats why 3 of the fans are going! Plus the box is actually in another room thank god!
On another note the air flow though the heatsink must be massive
