are you kidding mate? looks like he was laughing to me, i think he could have been a lot harsher, especially with the way that James ****face bloke asked him if the car would run again with an explosion of oil covering the engine bay, im surprised norris ever let the tossers take the car for a drive:(

The only two times I've seen one of Norris's creatons on screen have been ten of the best (broken diff) and on this (blown engine) :D

Poor choice of chariot in my opinion, dodge viper or similar would be the one to do it in.

I might be wrong but is the current record not held by a blind man? I'm being serious. Can anyone back me up on this?

No, thats the World Land Speed Record for blind people (seriously).

Back to Norris, I appreciate that folk like to get maximum power out of their cars but, really, what is the point if you can only drive a dozen miles or so between blow ups?

agreed totally, i find it unbelievable that if the car can underfuel and blow on a hot day like it did, then rebuilding an engine going for an attempted 900bhp seems ludicous but whatever im sure he knows a lot more than me on evo engine capabilities, whether the car ever made 900bhp or not is up for discussion i guess. i dont know why he didnt just build a monster skyline, sure others have done it but norris could add his touch and it would probably be more durable than the evos, what happened to his old evo 5 anyone know?

I think fair play to him... he's pushing the boundries in the U.K. and shall most probably be giving all the big power skylines a very good run for thier money, it's getting them a little jumpy and probably making them push their cars a little harder.. makes for some healthy competition IMO

I think the BBC didnt show a true picture of events. I took my S13 down to Norris last week and Simon was telling about the blown evo.

Apparently, it was the 5th high speed run with caravan in tow not the 2nd, in a short space of time. The driver was also repeatedly told that he should redline the car before shifting gear, which he ignored.

andyf
16-06-2003, 09:17
Indeed.
The problem is, you have a very highly tuned 2 litre car, and this was used to tow the caravan. The additional load is going to require a careful eye on the car, and I think Simon said they simply weren't giving it enough cooling down time after each run before starting the next.

AshT_200

You'd think they could show it on BBC 3 / Choice or something during the week but .. nooooo no chance of that.

Yeah you're right Ash, that was when Martin's Cossie had 517bhp, he now has a new setup with a rumoured 600+bhp, I saw him on track at Japfest and it looked bloody rapid even compared to Norris' Evo (before he stuffed it into the tyres) :)

IIRC the record was held by a Viper before Mr Hadland beat it.

I was reading on the Lancer board that the first few runs they did in Norris' car were at low boost, then the first run they did at high boost it blew up. Simon was saying that if he had been driving the car it might not have blown up as he would have noticed the EGTs going through the roof and lifted off accordingly. The fact that the Top Gear driver didn't notice sounds like gross negligence on their part and IMO they should bloody well pay for it

Simon also said that's the last time he's letting anyone else drive his car and I don't blame him!

re the caravan, have a look at the size of the bloody thing compared to what the current record holder towed, it's nearly twice as big. the engine would have been under massive strain at 126mph towing that thing no wonder something went wrong. the driver should have understood this and taken more care of the car and kept an eye on things. probably because he was a stunt driver and not a race driver he didnt. TG should cough up for the repair in my opinion. It's just typical of Simon to see it as an opertunity to do a rebuild for more power. He has also said he didnt want to do big power skylines etc because they've been done before, he wanted to be different and built the most powerfull evo outside Japan.

Yeah I noticed that, so only are they costing him by blowing his car up, they'll also be costing him money for lost business. Bastards

These things happen with highly tuned cars, everything's under so much more stress than usual, there's no way you could describe Norris' car as unreliable if you'd seen what an arse kicking he'd been giving it at every single track day I've seen him at

It does have to be said that its a waste of time trying to get so much bloody bhp out of an EVO!

its only a 2 litre engine to start with!

There is no way he can make a car as fast as a well modified Skyline! thats a twin turbo! and its much bigger engine capacity.

You can't beat Nissan's reliability!

He's got it in his brain that he can make his Evo faster than a modded skyline, NO WAY MATE!

Keep dreaming Norris!

You've done enough already!

When skyline's are modded, they are bloody reliable which is more than can be said for an evo or subaru.

Skyline is simply the best!

A 850-900bhp (thats what he's aiming for this time) EVO would pee on a big power skyline (rarely much over 1000bhp), think of the power to weight ratio and handling.

the fact is, its pointless trying to beat a modded skyline thats running 1000+bhp with a 2 litre evo, unless he's bored out the engine to 2.5 or whatever.

he says he is trying to give a skyline its run for its money, that may be true, but realistically he won't be able to beat the best Skylines out there that have been tuned.

Power to weight ratio?

even though skyline is heavier, the engine is far more potent and develops much more power, top end and bottom end. and you are saying handling will be better. when you get to these levels of power i doubt handling is going to make a big difference, both cars would be just as capable as each other.

the skylines handling is tremendous, no wonder its a legend.

Im not even talking about r34's here. A well tuned skyline R32 gtr or R33 will be overall the better car.

You can't knock Nissan's reliability. If you do, then why the hell are you driving S13's and S14's?

There are so many things wrong with what i said? Please explain!

im only stating the obvious, Skyline is the best overall car. Put it this way, the best modified evo would still end up costing more than the best modified skyline and its power would not be as good.

and if you are saying on a track, then it doesn't really matter, because on tracks you can get a 8 litre american beast and that would demolish a skyline nevermind an evo.

What the point of modding a skyline when a 300 Bhp Ultima will make it look gay, slow, overweight and like a family saloon, all day, every day.

The whole point is about peronal taste, Norris is renowned for being an Evo Tuner, and thats why hes invested in modding peoples Evo's, like wise, Abbey are the dudes with Skylines!

Each are running a business cattering for neche areas in the market place, and Personally I think and know that the Norris Evo isnt just about straight lines, it IS BLISTERINGLY fast on a track, something that a 1000bhp skyline is not!

I have to say i have very little time for norris, as his prices seem to be a bit of a joke. Granted he seems to know his stuff, and i can see why he built his evo, to demonstrate what he is capable of, and i have respect for him as far as he didnt just pile on the most expencive products, just the ones he though were the best.

I myself will never go to him for anything on my car, unless i win the lottery, which is looking increasingly unlikely by the day. :D

Fair play if he wants to build his toys, and as for the evo/skyline argument, we all have our oppinions, and has he not just bought a bright yellow skyline?

Oh, another reason i dont respect him, he gave a £70k car to topgear to tow a caravan at high speed with - mentally stable? think not.......... :wack:

You think and know at the same time? Give me proof then, do you have a video clip of this happening?

I doubt it.

Yeah, a 1000bhp skyline is not fast on a track! Please give me proof.

Thats why in Japan its the number one street car for racing, around wild bends and straight lines, not to mention drifting.
Please give me a break, people like you think they know it all when in actual fact you talk bollocks most of the time.

If you think you are smart, **** an evo, you can go get a porsche 911 turbo that will rape an evo on a track, road, even on a grass field.

Handling, power to weight ratio, blah blah, i suppose you've driven all these cars and know them inside and out to make a qualified decision. I suppose you are a highly experience mechanic and technician to make such a valued view, bollocks.

The fact that you have to Modify heavily an evo to even keep up with a standard Porsche or even a very very mildly modified skyline shows its amazing abilities doesn't it?.

Don't you have to have your head medically inserted into your anus to drive a Porsche? :wack:

I've been out in a great many different types of car, all driven by the same person over the same bit of road. He had an Evo 5, now an R34, and he says down his fave bits of super-twisty road the Evo would annihilate the R34 on every count, and vice-versa on bigger A-roads and the such. Having been in the car with him as he's demonstrated, I have to agree. The Evo is just so much more chuckable and nimble than a big heavy barge - you'd have to be stupid not to realise this.

Anyway, wasn't the Evo faster than the Lambo Murky-wotsit...?

Really, so the fact that a std EVO 6, on std A Roads, will piss all over a std GTR....

If Norris achieves his 900 BHP goal, lets see how the stats weigh up...

652 BHP per Tonne for EVO (900 BHP EVO VII RS)
600 BHP per Tonne for GTR R34 (1000 BHP)

So an EVO has to be stroked to get the power.... so does the Skyline.

Norris has spent 70000 on a car that you can buy for 28K.

This is development costs. It wouldn't cost you as much to get that power if you took your EVO to Norris and asked for the same.

It would cost more to get that power from a skyline if you took it to Abbey.

Like I said, you start modding a car, it isn't going to be reliable. I've had new engine gearbox turbo etc on a car that has done 100K.... is that reliable?

Get your head out of cloud cuckoo land Fan Boy  and start living in reality.

My mate has got a purple evo 6 and my other mate has an evo 4, but ive never said its crap. Why should i? I know its a better car than mine, rs-x, but i don't start dribbling or having seizures over it like some of you do on this board. The way you lot talk about Norris's Evo, i bet you would sleep with him just to drive it! LOL!

In fact i bet some of you lot would have orgasms if you saw how many Subaru Sti's there are in Bradford, around 50 or so in my area, and Bradford isn't a very big town. Im not talking standard Subaru's either, 300 and 400bhp monsters owned by young 20 year olds.

But the way you lot seem to talk is that you are experienced drivers of these cars and expert mechanics when in plain fact you aren't, so stop acting like you are.

Quite drooling over Norris's car, it may be fast, but it ain't the fastest! LOL!

  :D ;)

You can't beat Nissan's reliability!

He's got it in his brain that he can make his Evo faster than a modded skyline, NO WAY MATE!

Keep dreaming Norris!

You've done enough already!

When skyline's are modded, they are bloody reliable which is more than can be said for an evo or subaru.

Skyline is simply the best!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this was the first post regarding Skyline Vs EVO

Started by yourself, who has never been in a 1000BHP Skyline, however, there are some people on this board who have been in Norris's EVO.

So if you cannot substantiate your claims, need I say more?

Oh, most of the Big Power Skylines in this country are running single Turbo, If you didn't know... :p

I think you are overlooking the Oreca Viper that destroyed everything on the track in the GT series for 3 years or so, until the Calloway Corvette was born. :D

well i spoke to my old friend Mr Kahn(Thats Mr Kahn, owner of Kahn Alloy Designs if you don't know). the other day while he was driving his porsche , and he said evo's are cack. he said he bought one but it wasnt good enough as a daily driver and gave a wrong image.

i wouldn't blame him for saying that, considering he's got a ferrari f50 in his shop. LOL! What would he think of a S14! I wouldnt want to say!

This was posted by a reliable sourse on another board :-

the reyland escort cossie owned/built by martin hadland set some new times at brunters.

it was at 1.8 bar boost(so not full boost), on 102 ron fuel and on some rubbish cheapo road tyres

the times he set were:-

0-60mph 2.89 secs
0-100 mph 6.06 secs
1/4 mile 10.66mph@136.95mph

top speed 194.7mph

Seems impressive enough to me !!

PhilMorrison
16-06-2003, 22:53
yep thats with his new engine, his caravan pull run was done on about 500bhp AFAIK.. also the caravan that Martin used was much smaller than the 1 top gear bought, not knockin Martins achievment, it just seems that if Topgear had done any research (smallest caravan ur aloud to use) they would have broken the record no worries, and possibly would'nt have blown up Norris's engine..

25th July Topgear reminder!

Motoring magazine. Jeremy Clarkson tests the Jaguar X type estate, Richard Hammond finds the recipe for the perfect roadster, and a look at why the Isle of Harris is the ideal location to road test the latest cabriolets. This week's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car is Ranulph Fiennes.

Sounds a bit dull......
