Bit of a twist to the end of this as it'll be the last time we see it or any of its incarnations.
Personally I reckon that Gene Hunt's the one whose been in a coma right from the offset.
Excellent, i love ashes to ashes!!!

That was a good twist to the end of the series. Shame it has gone, now the BBC need to find a worthy replacement.

If everyone is dead and Huntworld is a kind of limbo how come Tyler made it back home at the end of LOM but then topped himself to get back?
I'm going with near-death experience - he got a glimpse of the (first stage of the) afterlife, but made it back.
If everyone is dead and Huntworld is a kind of limbo how come Tyler made it back home at the end of LOM but then topped himself to get back?
All the way through Life on Mars Sam Tyler could hear them trying to revive him and bring him back to life. That all but stopped for Bolly Knickers at the end of the second series.

At the start of LOM, Sam was in a coma after being knocked down. He was near dead though and thats when he got drawn into Gene's world.
At the end of LOM series 2 Sam recovered and returned to modern day, however he didnt like it and decided to kill himself by jumping off a roof. At this point he returned to Gene's world.
After a while he figured it out like B-Knickers and he went to the pub (with Anne) and left.
In ashes to ashes, B-Knickers (who had all the info about Gene's world from Sam's brief period when he returned to reality before topping himself) got shot, and entered a coma as well for two seasons. This is why you see plenty of odd references to her trying to get back.
Difference is this time she snuffed it in the hospital (end of S2) and thats why in S3 no reference was made to her coma or attempting to "return"
As she was toes up, she was still in Gene's world. However finally she' and the rest of them figured it out (because of Keats).
Keats's appears not to have been able to approach them in s1/2 of LOM and s1/2 of A2A because neither Sam or B-knickers was actually dead (at that point).
Although why he didnt try and tempt Ray/Chaz and Chris earlier (as they were cream crackered) is not clear, perhaps they were not "advanced" in there dead-ness or something :wack:
Simples :D
I've just started watching Life on Mars again, because TCMA hasn't seen it before. Apart from it being a whole lot more entertaining than Ashes to Ashes, a lot of it seems to make a little more sense, now you know the full background to it
and thats why in S3 no reference was made to her coma or attempting to "return"
I think I may have to review the opening credits then
