Well I thought that id do a bit of a project thread on this seeing as its my first 4x4 http://images.landrovernet.com/smilies/smile.gif

I brought it and was not that well in the know and a tad over excited but thats all part of the fun of it http://images.landrovernet.com/smilies/biggrin2.gif

Its a 300Tdi Discovery 1 on an M plate although im not sure what side of the crossover it is for ordering parts yet http://images.landrovernet.com/smilies/redface.gif

As with most of my cars that I plan to keep, use and want relaible I generally strip them, find all the issues I can so then when its done there are no hidden bodges to find !

As expected there was rust but more than I thought there would be (as it always seems) !

The boot floor was totally shot along with the side panels and wheel arches - doubt the 2inch thick sponge that was fitted from the factory helped http://images.landrovernet.com/smilies/rolleyes.gif

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/13.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/10.jpg

Upon poking around / stripping other areas it became evident that there was more needed !

Passenger front door shut going soft
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/6.jpg

Drivers side rear door shut going soft
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/3.jpg

Drivers side scuttle tray
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/19.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/15.jpg

Front wheel arches are also wrecked but no pictures im afraid but im sure you all know about them http://images.landrovernet.com/smilies/wink.gif

Heater matrix has also been bypassed so guess that it leaks so going to replace that anyway
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/2.jpg

Fuel tank strap is also returning to nautre so ended up getting another (not cheap http://images.landrovernet.com/smilies/frown.gif )
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/14.jpg

So I got the cutter out and have gone for it - its being welded by Terry - a bloke I met via a local 4x4 club and to say he is helpful and sound is an understatement

Cutty cutty grindy grindy
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/16.jpg

Turns out rearcrossmember is shafted so new one from YRM - awesome service and the part is a great fitment
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/17.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/18.jpg

Side panels are getting there too
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/21.jpg

And tank strap in while the floor from Paddocks is out (another place that has very good and helpful people !

fook me i thought s13's were bad, but all credit to you for taking the decision to rescue it, if it was mine all the usefull bits would have been removed and the scrappy would have got the rest.

i shall be watching your progress

Paul why didn't you just buy one in better condition and avoid all of these problems? Kudos for getting it roadworthy again tho.

Looking forward to seeing it and going tagging

As above matey - its like buying an S13. You can either drive it and hope its ok or take the carpets up, look under the arch liners etc. This has pleanty of tax and I reckon it could still have passed an MOT

Good ones are good money and I dont earn enough :wack: Saying that though its not alot of money - more just time which I dont mind too much.

Not sure if they do disco boxes but it's worth asking. I think it's going to cost at least 200 notes but it depends on how much i've managed to brake to be honest.

Everywhere else has been quoting nearly £500 for a recon boxs so this isn't that bad.

This is how mine looks at the moment :wack:

P38 shape, so still modern looking. Black with 19" wheels

Apparently they are aluminium bodied on a steel chassis so should be ok :)

p.s. good work on the new boot floor :)

More progress has been made :)

Basically the drivers sill was getting a tad soft in places and the scuttle tray had been filled with sealer so choppy choppy platey platey. By the time everything is refitted then it will all be hidden anyway :)

Bit more welding progress

A nice crack had appeared by the seat mount so that got a nice line done on it
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/43.jpg

Along with the wheel arch
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/49.jpg

And all the passenger side sills
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/44.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/45.jpg

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/47.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/48.jpg

So be finished on the welding so its then putting new heater matrix in along with the interior and then sorting the oil leak and then using it :D

Paulpen
15-09-2010, 20:39
Kinda forgot about this so ill tyr and sum it all up quickly !

After doing all the welding I then got some nice big tyres on steel wheels and sold the clear indicators for rather alot

So then I had this :
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/DSC00339.jpg

Then I went of my first 4x4ing adventure in a forest trying to get "clips". I have since discovered that this was not the best place to do my first adventure as im a tad competitive and trees do damage

So after that day it looked like this : http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/DSC00340.jpg

A wrecked wing, missing bullbar, broken headlamp and indicator, totally bent drivers side and two broken rear windows. Whoops ! Did I mention that I needed it 3 days later so my fater in law could tow a caravan to Glastonbury festival

Well it made it there and back and the only fault was the rear tyres rubbing on bumps and starting to seperate the wings from the body. So then it came home, I felt sad for a bit and decided to get it more "robust".

So I cut the arches more, reattached the rear quarters, put a new alpine glass in and made a rear quarter one from plastic for the time being.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/DSC00438.jpg

Then went on a mission when I brought a dirt cheap winch that I took apart and got working after a few hours. With it working I decided I needed to make a bumper to house it so a kind mate helped me out and then I had this :
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/DSC00437.jpg

So I though id give this 4x4ing another go on sunday so went to a local quarry (less trees ;)) and had loads of fun. Discovered that if you plan things out, take your time and admit that you cant compter with full trialers you break less - well nothing actually !

I did however discover two things
1 - My towbar that I need likes to act more like a plough and beach me constantly so that needs sorting
2 - My wheels still rub my arches front and rear during articulation so I either need to cut them more or lift the car up.
3 - Ive still not replaced my plastic window but id rather not put more glass in - some metal would be better but not sure how just yet
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/DSC00433.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b224/Paulpenuk/Disco/DSC00434.jpg

So there you go - the last 8 months or so :D

Chriscooke

Edit: Oh and that window is class

Its in a place called Charlton Adam near Keinton Mandeville but it was heaving - must have been about 50 cars

The window was temporary about 3 months ago seeing as its from a mates shed window spares pile :wack:

Went out for a play with a few mates sunday and I 100% need to stop the towbar and rubbing issues.

Did do a bit of a service though - fuel filter, fuel sedimentor, oil filter and oil Smile

Tried to fit a steering arm guard but my steering arm bolt wont come out Sad

Also broke the bulb holer for my front indicator so need a new one.

Oh and my whole front grill and lights area is getting very "loose".......

Well luckily I brought a spare vehicle for parts and the one on that came off fine - it was soaked in oil by the engine though - leaks aint always bad :wack:

I knew it would be bad after some reading so was prepared - was hoping to at least get the nut off though . One the nut end was done the head was turning fully for a good few turns then snapped off and went solid again :smash:

My bull bar is gong to be part of my front bumper when the welder comes out :D

Kudos on the welding, rear floor area looks very tidy now! I need to attack the front of mine and the rear crossmember... Seeing as I've never welded before, it could be a long project

I do pride myself that it gets used for what it was designed for :D

I think I gave £800 for it towards the start of this year which was a tad high looking at how low they went in the summer and the work it needed. Saying that though they have all now gone back up due to the snow lol
