Harmonic balencer? One that cancells vibration by setting up equal but opposite vibrations in harmony with the source of the problem. Often gear driven shafts with lumps on fitted to in-line four cylinder engines to reduce vibration.
The origins of harmonica balancing go back to the days of Queen Elizabeth the first. One of Queen Betty's little known talents was playing the harmonica for her guests. However the sight of a royal playing the harmonica was not enough for many, and noticing that her guests were becoming bored, the Queen decided to finish each tune by balancing the harmonica on the end of her nose, in a similar fashion to a seal balancing a ball. This trick proved hugely popular and people up and down the land were hooked by harmonica balancing fever. Jugglers, jokers and magicians all incorporated harmonica juggling into their acts to the delight of crowds all over the country. Hundreds of years later and the fad has all but died out. However you will still find some old timers in drinking taverns around this great isle that can perform an impromptu harmonica balancing for you.
Oh shit, I think I've mis-read the title of this thread :o :D

Also used to describe torsional vibration dampers on the end of the crankshaft. Think of it as a two piece pulley on the crank with a rubber ring connecting them. The rubber damps out torsional vibrations and gives the accessories on that drive belt a smoother drive, ie less vibration fed through the belt to the alternator or whatever.

Really? Do you have an attention span longer than 5 seconds ? Because this result was on the first page returned:
"Crankshafts vibrate with a twisting motion due the torque variation that results as each cylinder fires. This vibration is at its worst at some critical RPM. On a V8, this RPM is typically in the 4-5000 RPM range. If you operate the engine at this critical RPM without a harmonic balancer excessive vibration will eventually BREAK THE CRANKSHAFT. DON'T LEAVE IT OFF."
"A harmonic balancer modifies the vibration characteristics of the crankshaft and flywheel assembly. They are made from of a heavy steel ring mounted over a thin layer of rubber on the outside of a center hub. The rubber acts as a spring. The ring twists on the rubber to cancel out crankshaft torsional vibration. Some energy is removed as heat in the rubber but the balancer's primary function is to store energy and return it to the crankshaft at just the right time to suppress vibration."
And it gets a lot more technical than that.
The one on the Ultima is Liquid filled too ;) and the most expensive Chevy application one you can buy!

Not at work no
Thought it was a gizmo for balancing twin carbs - plug em into inlets and listen for air tone - adjust until sound sounds same from both inlets and hey presto carbs ballanced:confused:
No balances the harmonics as Andy's posts describe, and YES, you can get EVERYTHING balanced on a Chevy, you should be more suprised you can get balanced stuff for a 2***** to be honest

Didn't Janeway manage to escape the Borg by using one in Series 5, Episode 7? :D (FYI I have no idea if this is true or not; I'm not a trekky :p )
