Am i right in thinking that a 30 Mph speed limit can only be enforced if there are street lights every 200 yds.

Or is that complete borrocks??

Just wondering as im sure i read this somewhere

Pretty sure that's borrocks. All the villages o/s Banbury have just been dropped to 30 limits & at least half of those don't have street lights.

Well thats exactly what i thought as between Banbury and Daventry i must drive thru atleast 3 villages with 30 mph limits. (I dont dare speed in 30's especially in northamptonshire)

Just wondered if anyone else had heard it.

Cant you tell im bored at work? lol

Lol. And I'm just off home now to enjoy the rest of the day in the garden ( if it doesn't rain ) with a nice cold beer.

I recall reading/hearing somewhere that the street lights can give you an indication of the speed limit. They generally get spaced out further as the limit gets higher.

If its a streetlit built up area you don't have to put up 30 signs to indicate a 30 mph limit. It 30 unless specified otherwise I believe.

I was reading of some technical loophole the other day which might enable some convictions for speeding in a 30 (particularly villages on a main road which have recently been reduced to a 30 limit) to be overturned..

Bit confused now (not taking much to do it tho, lol) So does there need to be street lights on a main road thats been reduced to 30mph then?

No, there don't have to be street lights for it to be 30. The thing with the ABD is about local authorities using the wrong legislation to drop a limit to 30, so technically that bit of road is still 40 / 50 / 60.

Streetlights are definitely not needed for a 30 limit. If street lighting is present though you don't need 30mph repeaters as the speed limit automatically becomes 30mph unless signs indicate otherwise. If new lighting is installed on an existing 30/40/50/60/70 limit, then a TRO (traffic regulation order) is necessary to bring the limit back up to what it was originally. If the TRO is not complete when the lighting is installed, then the limit cannot be enforced.
Guess what i do for a living!;)
