View Full Version : Tips for enjoying scrabble required
Unfortunately many of us have to drive scrabbly cars occasionally. Even the most ardent anti-scrabblers amongst us have been known to dabble in certain Swedish and Italian scrabblers occasionally ;)
I have driven my wife's car to work the last couple of days. It is a scrabbly, bouncy peice of sh1t Astra 1.8 Sport. I have posted before about how crap it is but basically it has more power than it can cope with (at a meagre 125bhp or so  ) has a crap ride, crap handling, crap steering. It's crap :wack:
So I have been trying to find other ways to enjoy driving the thing. Wheel spins and handbrake turns wear thin pretty quickly but then I noticed it has a trip computer (we've only owned the car 2 years and I finally noticed :o ). This little toy helps take away the pain of driving an Astra and should probably be standard fit in all fwd cars :D
Fun game number one was finding out how low I could get the instant consumption to go. First gear is obviously best and bouncing of the limiter sees a respectable 1.2 mpg :D However this too wore thin quite quickly. Current fun game is trying to maximise mpg over my journey to work. Today I got to work averaging an incredible 41.0 mpg  I had to drive like a coffin dodger to acheive this but it was actually far more entertaining than actually driving the thing properly :D
Has anyone else out there got their own little tips for how they make driving scrabbly cars bareable?
I found that the delta in the wet - if you dip the clutch really quickly and let it back up doing about 4000 rpm it would then spin its wheels for as long as you like ................. in any gear :D :D :D
Also the ole lift off oversteer was always a favourite :D
And Reverse Donuts :D
good for J turns :wack:
its fun selling them and buying a proper wheel drive car
mite i add i have never owned a fwd car
mearley driven the feckers :|
Buy a 205 GTi - it was the only enjoyable scrabbly car I've driven :D
Failing that, as doc says, reverse doughnuts :D
Or J - turns? ;)

Yup, Lift off oversteer is always a challange in a FWD car :D :D
how are fwd cars "bouncy"
is it the power going though the frount wheels making the frount of the car sorta pitch and dive ?
Pete
it can be demonstrated in your local supermartket carpark
a nova...or other bad fwd car
pull speed backwards
yank the wheel
WEEEEEEEEEEEE !
Me and a couple of mates bought a knackered Metro for £40 once and spent the whole evening doing J-turns, reverse doughnuts, and the like down at the local Park and Ride :D
It was great, mind you, I'm much more responsible these days
i always found for the imitation RWD effect... wait until the front tyres are in dire need of changing due to lack of grip... then simply swap them with the back ones!! loads of fun:D

I did that with my 205 GTi so the tyres would all wear out at once, you can guess what happened the next time I was going round a roundabout fast and lifted off
aah yes, the good old 205 lift off oversteer!! combined with bald rear tyres = Pete C performing a 360???
am i correct?
I'm currently doing the "max MPG" thing;
I have driven like an OAP for the past few days and, after filling up before starting the 'test', have so far managed 256 miles and STILL haven't reached the half way point on the fuel gauge!
Now that IS interesting!
I shall start collecting stamps next.......:wack:

Wow! That was close
Thanks for saving me from a life of blandness, JB :notworthy
I had been sucked into the not-at-all interesting vortex of FWD drudgery :o
Can't wait to get the 2***** back to liven things up.
Gulp! I was almost lost for good then......... :wack:
The next step is looking forward to the Friday night shop at Asda or saying to your mates "You know, what I really love about this car is it's sooooooo practical for taking stuff to the dump". :D

Nope, it equals Pete C's 205 attempting to perform a 360, Pete C skillfully catching it, overcorrecting, catching it, overcorrecting, and then catching it for the final time before bombing off down the following stretch of DC with a grin on my face and a very scared passenger :D :D :D
I miss her *sniff*:
