View Full Version : Why do things always go wrong at weekends?

Grrrrr. At least now I think I have a reason why I was having problems stopping the other day :(

Took the car out this afternoon to try out the new boost gauge. Had to come to a sharpish halt at some traffic lights and got that enjoyable metal-on-metal noise from the front :( I'd had some fairly horrible noises from the brakes the previous weekend, so am reasonably sure that the front pads have gone :(

Went to Halfords (yeah, I know  but it's the only place near me!) but surprise, surprise, they had no 200 pads in stock! Back at home I got all my courage together and started to take off the wheel - with the intent of looking at the pads to see if they were shagged - but then had a girlie moment when the time came to actually remove the wheel, and re-assembled the thing again! (Had the car slip off the jack once before, so am a bit nervous about having it up on the jack these days lol) (Oh, and big thanks to suffolk1 for telling me where the jacking point was! :D:D [nother girlie moment lol] )

Soooo, tomorrow I have to take a half day at least to get the car in somewhere to check out the brakes and replace them if need be :( Wouldn't normally mind, but I was on a course all of last week so everyone at work will think I'm skiving tomorrow...and I hate that!

OK....rant over :) Off you all go again lol :)

Your pads are shagged, so it would've been a complete waste of time to strip everything down and not have the new pads to put in.

I just hope that makes you feel better  :)

Careful where you take it, possible diagnosis, depending where you take it could be- :( ooh you've worn them pads down too far mate you need new discs as well.Depends how long you've been hearing that grinding noise though, don't take their word for it have a look yourself while their examining it.

Thanks Robbie, that does help :D

david, disks look ok-ish to me so far :) minor scoring but nothing too severe :) Will fight off any suggestion of replacement, because I'm hoping to go for a brake conversion some time before then end of the year :)

If you have a problem finding pads try asking for 98> impreza pads, they are the same fitting.

I take it there are no wear indicators on these pads then? (only had my car a few months so not changed them yet)
My dad did his on his Jag the other week, they had no indicators either!

The rear pads have wear indicators, but not the front ones afaik :)

they should have wear indicators on them, nothing complicated though, just a bit of metal that rubs against the disk and makes a squeeky noise when your pads are low

My fronts have been squeaking since I got the car (December) Finally put new cross drilled slotted rotors on this weekend with new pads, no more squeak.

Does anyone know the proper way to break in pads? I heard to drive fast then stop fast to heat them up, I also heard not to brake hard for 200 miles.... Help?

I've always gone with the gentle braking for a hundred miles or so method.

Hmm, time to replace my rear pads then!

We all know how the front does the majority of the braking effort, and with the majority of my mileage not being hells bells, would I be better going for standard pads for the rear rotors as I doubt I'd often get rear pads up to any sufficient temp to warrant sport pads?
