JB u must report this to a mod, if u haven't already..
As Dave says if it happens again just make sure they know they are doing it and havent got a virus as there are quite a few going about at the mo. Dont want you launching a full scale nuclear attack on some poor fellow

yep arry the normal everyday pc illiterate fool:D :D :D ( joke mate)
it aint rocket science peeps run around in other peeps pcs all the time for 1 reason or another, at the moment it seems to be port scanning which just looks for ways in so as they can create a pub, which for an easy explanation is they will find a bit of space on your hard drive and upload info there and other peeps will then be able to download it, my fire wall goes off a couple of times a night and when they get no response they pish off and bother someone else, this is also called pinging, on a more serious note some peeps are looking at files as to stealing your identity ,ie, bank details cred card stuff, anything that can get them goods etc in your name . my mate left his fire wall of and watched what was happening on his pc, someone got in and set up a pub on his hard disc and uploaded a truck full of mp3s and within a day loads where uploading and downloading music, he let it continue as they only had access to the hard disc he uses as an ftp anyway so it was cool got about 30 albums of them before they moved on or smelt a rat, when they where traced using neo trace they where in malaysia, so get a fire wall

Deleted JB's post at his request, he wanted the whole thread removed but I think pieman has posted some good information for the not so technical pc users so Im leaving it here as it would be a shame to remove it.
I suggest people get clued up on pc and and internet security for there own sake. A guy has just got off a peadofile charge after a trojan downloaded 14 kiddie porn images onto his computer and left a trail to him. It has take since last August with the help of respected specialists to clear his name. in the meantime he's been beaten up and tarred with a peado tag. This is why computer security is very important.
I don't get it.
You're all talking about a post from JB but I can't see one... why?

Bloody hell! I knew things like this *could* happen but didn't realise it was as easy as it sounds:o
Is it really only BB that it effects as I only have dial up so I should be ok...??:(

It would make it near on impossible as you will be assigned a new ip address each time you dial up, effectively a new ID each time. there a few "tools" that can sit silently on your machine and every time you logg on it will send your new ip address to whoever infected you machine in the 1st place. Back orrifice by the cult of the dead cow does this, if you can get someone to load BO onto there machine (which is easy as you can hide it in spreadsheets and stuff) you will have more control over there machine than they have. including any periferals you have connected, ie web cams. Ive seen a pic of a guys face whan a hacker asked him why he was being a dweeb on his pc when he had a loverly girl lying on his bed LMAO. he'd been watching him on his own web cam. luckily BO is picked up by nearly all antivirus software nowdays.

nice comment nathan, my mate hacked his own spare pc to see how easy it was and its easy as it seems, norton firewall, zone alarm and black ice did stop his intrusion and notify him who it was, or at least there ip adrress, which on this occassion was himself,

lol never a truer word said,
it,s almost piss easy to do an all,
word of advice dont ever run an exe
you,ve d/l unless your 110% sure it,s
safe, I,m also including things like no cd cracks in this
(exp from kazza) once the port scanning is running
whoever has hacked you will know when ya on line,
and whats on ya pc regardless of dynamic ip,
he might even talk to you aka "matrix style":D :D :D
I used Norton but lost my cd then installed Zone Alarm and it works fine.
Obviously I wouldnt know if it missed anything but I'm very careful with emails etc. I only open up mails from people I know and even then I have Norton checking my mail and ZA does this in a basic fashion too. Basically if you open every email you are sent and do not scan attachments then you are seriously asking for trouble!
Obviously any new viruses might get through the protection but given careful useage of email and using intelligence as to which mails to open will cut down your chances of infection.

the only way to be 100% secure is to not connect to the net and to never install any software. virus scanners and firewalls can only detect what they are looking for (i.e. not something that has just been written)
being paranoid is healthy. always back up data you cant afford to lose.
