right guys my contract runs out in 10 days and im due an upgrade so what should it be. all phones look pretty at first but what would you guys suggest for longevity(sp).
iv currently got a iphone 3g 8gb.had it for nearly 18months , and im more than happy to stick with apple and get a 3gs 16 or 32gb as mine is jailbroke and am still finding out new stuff with it so it makes sence.
but what else is on offer. im thinking the HTC HD2 as im a touchscreen guy so as little buttons as possible . only thing that is steering me away from the iphone is anyone i konw that bought the 3gs has had to reset it countless times and my brothers camera shutter decided never to open after a month.
any help much appreciated especially anyone who has the above HTC and has lived with it for a while.are you bored with it yet?
personally i would get the Touch Pro 2, but i would get it unbranded, making sure it has WM6.5 on it.
but if therei s one with 6.1 HTC have a download to flash the rom on their site.
its the best of both worlds, good size touch screen, HTC's GUI is easy to use with fat fingers and it has a keyboard for long messaging.
i've never had an issue with a HTC product. i do like the look of the HD2 but its the size of it that puts me off
From what I have been told, if you dont want an iPhone then:
Blackberry Storm > HTC > Googlephone.
My brother is loving his Nokia N87 but its not touchscreen/bigscreen so doesnt compare IMO :)

Nexus One
www.google.com/phone
only released last week, Its online and sim free only at the moment but tbh you'll be better off buying it Sim Free anyway as Vodafone plan to sell the phone for £180 with a 18month contract on a £30 month contract.
it'll cost you about £340 to import the phone just now, thats if it clears customs without incurring any charges,
Phatbob has one of those googlephones and hates it with a passion. You cant tell when its ringing, its in and out of service all over the place and cuts out frequently.
As he said "Its a brilliant gadget but shit if you actually want to make or receive a phone call" :D

i'm in the same boat, i have a 8gb iphone 3g and am due an upgrade. Although my iphone is 18 months old, i'm still not bored of it and despite trying to find a new alternative there is nothing out there that competes.
I think i'm going to hold out until the summer and see what the next iphone is liike
My sister recently got the HTC HD2 and it's a lovely looking phone but huge. The screen is great (800x480 IIRC) but the touch sensitivity is quite low. The apps leave a lot to be desired too.
Basically I think if you want apps and games you're stuck with the iPhone for now until the Windows Mobile / Android phones catch up a bit.
Dave
what apps and games do you want, yes the preloaded ones can be a bit pish, but 5 mins googling will find sites with 1,000,000's of apps (shareware/freeware) for WinMo devices to do anything you want.
oh and download Windows market place for the HD2 its Microsofts version of the apple apps store, not much on there at the mo as its new, but there will be soon
I've had the google g1 for a year now which is an HTC and its the first phone I've had that has run faultlessly from day one, I don't recall ever having any problems with it. I'll definately be looking for another HTC when im due an upgrade shortly. Having the keyboard is quite usefull as well so I would probably be looking for another keyboard version. Not quite as many apps as the iphone but there's still hundreds to choose from and as the HTC's grow in popularity so do the options open to them. Only let down really is the camera.

Thanks guys think il be definatly staying away from the iPhone as my mum has now got one , so my family of Iphones has grown to me/bro/girlfriend/her uncle/and cousin and now my mum without mention of countless friends , bit it's the mum thing that does it everytime she gets the phone iv got said phone has to go lol
i was only doing a bit of reading up on the newer phones today. If you're avoiding iphones id have to say the Nexus One. really does seem to be a pretty good all rounder phone.

Doesn't the nexus one only come sim free at the mo , as I'd get a free phone from o2 and decided the nexus one was for me I'd have to sell the o2 phone on to buy it so then I'd just be looking at what phone o2 do that most ppl want I'd get most money for selling , brings us back to iPhone again lol ,

It's bloody awesome
I've got the HD2, am typing on it right now. To be honest it's not great, I miss my 2 year old N82.
Good things:
Screen looks amazing
Built in GPS works really well with TomTom
Web browser is good
You can fix most of the bugs
Bad things:
Camera is pretty average. It was terrible, but we got a hot fix which fixed it a bit.
SMS messages randomly don't send
Standard keyboard is shit. Had to find another.
Standard Task Manager is shit
Poor sound quality during calls
Rubbish media player
Countless other stupid little problems
I could go on. Basically out of the box it's rubbish, you can, with a lot of time and searches on various forums fix most of the problems but you shouldn't really have to. The hardware itself is great, but it's like the software got no testing at all.
How's the multi-tasking on the HD2?

I hear the new Nokia N900 is a powerhouse of a phone, its meant to be really good! They say its more like a PDA then a phone, the OS is open source so no doubt there will be loads you can do with it, and it runs firefox as a web browser with full flash meaning that all online flash games and video's work
Ill probably get one next as my N97 is complete rubbish :(
Check some reviews out for it, meant to be awesome!
Hardware wise it's no great shakes compared to HTC's offerings, but Maemo5 is quite interesting. Nokia do seem to be leaving the developing to 3rd parties though, it can't even MMS out of the box.
Hopefully Fennec will be making it's way to Android now Google have relaxed their rules, as it's a great O/S and it would complement it very well (not that the Android browser is poor, I'm on it now and Flash 10.x is due shortly)
I had an HTC Touch diamond 2 with Win Mob 6.5 & the phone itself is good but I evenutally switched to the HTC Hero with Android. I can quite honestly say having used my mates iphone - polished looking as it is - I wouldnt swap my Hero for one but thats porbably because I dont think I could go to a phone without a trackball now more than anything else. :)
Now that everyone is slavering over the Nexus, prices of Heros/Dreams/Magics have plummeted, if you look hard enough you can get an unlocked Hero for about £150-£180 & a Magic/Dream for a bit less. Hero is probably the one to go for since it's officially going to get a software update to Android 2.1 whereas the other 2 are not confirmed.
Had a go on my colleagues Blackberry Storm & it's very nice, but its a bit too business orientated for my liking & no Wifi seems a major omission, dont know if the Storm 2 has Wifi though.
Basically biased as i am Android phones FTW! :D
