Hi, having purchased a Toshiba laptop for my daughters xmas, i have started trying to get it all up and running with all her software that she used on my vista based model but seem to be falling at every hurdle.

The first thing she did after I loaded the pre installed software and her being 14 was to download msn messenger which said had installed successfully, however she cannot find any way of opening it . There is no desktop icon or mention of it on the program list off the start bar. I tried to install it myself and it has come up that it is already there. Searched through the find tool and cant find it that way either.

The second thing I tried to do was install the Samsung PC studio software for her mobile phone so she can manage her tunes etc, it came up with numerous errors and when you open the software and connect the phone it doesn't see it.

I still have to install digital camera, creative zen, apple ipod & printer software but dont want to go on any further until i get these sorted. I remember having a couple of issues when I went to put my stuff from Win 2000 pro machine onto my new vista laptop a few years back but nothing like this, infact if i remember right those probs were because i didnt connect it to the internet and let it download the updates first after which it all worked okay......surprisingly given that it was only 5 days after the launch and everybody was having problems.

Any ideas or assistance would be much appreciated as i am at the point of contacting Toshiba and demanding a free downgrade to Vista again. I would have put a copy of mine on it, If it wasnt for the fact the vista is hidden on a partition in my hard drive and I have no actual copy on a disk. Must be a Toshiba thing as I have no Windows 7 disk with the new one either.

Cheers, Richard.

Something very wrong there, messenger should work perfectly.
Did you download the latest version (windows live messenger) because if not then you "might" have an issue.

As for the samsung stuff, is it windows7 compatible? If not go look for the latest version from the manufacturer.
Also what mode is UAC in (control panels > users accounts ) as by default windows 7 will challenge you for any software that requires lower level admin access to the system (as it quite rightly should). Turning UAC down a bit will stop some of these messages.

Do not "downgrade" to vista, thats just dumb. The issues you have are the usual ones of having to go and get updated software, this is normal. You cant always make such a big upgrade to the OS and expect old software to work.

Edited to say:
If you have installed messenger live and its not made an icon for some reason, the executable can be found in program files>windows live>messenger>msnmsgr (shortcut it to the desktop)

Right, I have fired her laptop up and I have just went to microsoft to download windows live again so i am doing that now. As for the Samsung stuff, it seems to be only compatiable with up to Vista, bought my other half a new Tocco lite for xmas so going to check her disk to see if its 7 compatiable. I was told by a few guys at work vista stuff should be okay as win 7 not so different.

Right its installed again and said its already there, when i follow your map to the exec I have two program files, Program files and Program files(x86).

When i go into to win live folder thru the 1st one the only folder there is Family safety which contains another folder called WFP which contains two files fssfltr and fssfltr.sys

The latter contains two folders, Family safety (same as above) and Toolbar which is full of folders called en- au, en- ca, en-gb etc like maybe relating to different countries. The gb one containsxml documents but no file to be found anywhere called messenger

WTF? thats er really odd. Messenger is in there on mine.
I asusme your using the x64 version of windows 7 (hence the two program files directories) this may cause some issues with crap software, but not messenger.
I suggest going to add remove programs and uninstalling messenger live and then reinstalling the whole thing again. It should work faultlessly.

Vista and windows 7 are very similar, if something works on vista then its 99% likely to work on 7. However some apps dont like the x64 install of 7 (or vista) so you may have to look for the 64 bit versions of those.
Also as i mentioned before, many older crappier apps require Run as administrator rights to work. Your samsung stuff should go ok, according to this post below.

It is possible to get the software to work on Windows 7 x64 but you have to install the latest version of PC Studio from the website (October 2009) (it may work on an older version but I'm not sure).

During installation ignore the 8 warnings you get about it not being able to install the USB Drivers.

Plug your phone in and choose PC studio mode and Windows will say it couldn't locate a driver.

Now click on the Start Menu and right-click on Computer/My Computer and go to Properties and choose Device Manager.

Now scroll down to the Samsung Mobile Modem and right-click it and choose update driver and specify c:\program files (x86)\Samsung as the location to search for drivers and it should automatically install the driver and then a new device will appear called something like unknown device and repeat the process with this.

Now PC Studio works on Windows 7 (x64 i.e. 64bit).

Let's hope Samsung release an updated version soon which does not require this carry on to get it working!

All Programs > Windows Live > Windows Live Messenger ???

After that it should automatically prompt you to install the latest version

I had a similar problem on a customers machine a few weeks back on windows 7, windows live (latest version) loaded fine but whenever it signed in it closed itself down completely (from task manager the lot). Reinstalled the works.. Ended up reverting to a previous version which worked fine

Problem is microsoft like their updates so dont expect to find an old version from them or from a hotlink to their server. You'll have to probably source it elsewhere.

Right, its done the updates from earlier and i have again removed the windows live and re installed to find prob still exists. On the live download page it gives a was this unsuccessful if so click here to install with a slower download option. Its still the same. I am really burnt out with this and sense its gonna be grief, as I bought from Tesco at £460, i dont fancy my chances of any technical support so how do i go about getting rid of this or at least getting a copy of Vista instead. My daughter is doing my head in with it so much as it does nothing she needs it to do?

I can tell you right now that windows messenger live works fine on windows 7
There must be something else ****ing it up, remove all the parental stuff on it, remove all the extra shit the manufacturer supplies with it and try again.
Also for the time being she can use msn web messenger through a web browser.

Your making a big mistake asking for vista..

If your really stuck we could try out windows 7's remote assistance, i have never tried it over the internet before :wack: but use it all the time at work.

Cheers, the thing thats getting me madder by the minute is that its brand new out the box with nothing installed on it other than what came pre loaded and it cant even run microsofts own software so what hope is there with other companies stuff. I will uninstall it all again and try once more. I bet the parental shite wont come off now

You will prob find its the non microsoft stuff thats causing the problem, most manufacturers of pcs and laptops saddle there kit with some of the worst crap out there. It tends to make them run poorly.

If you have no luck then send me a PM and i will send you my email address, if you put that into the remote assistance thing i might be able to connect to it and fix it.
