View Full Version : domain name buying
I want to buy a domain name.
Is there any company I should avoid ? .. you try googling reviews on them and they all seem w4nk :wack:
All I want is the .com prefix, no diskspace, no 30 email addresses etc etc etc .... just a £8 domain name
However there seems to be no end of hidden sh1t. I want to forward the domain name to disk space else where ... however if you use uk2.net they want £6.00 a year just to get rid of there advertising  ... I dont want continual adverts on my site, just a seemless domain name that I can forward to my hosts elsewhere ???
so any recommendations

godaddy are cheap as well
;)
are you flirting with me ?
I usually use 123-reg.
The last domain I bought I registered with namecheap.com. If you google a discount code you'll get a little bit knocked off the total too. Cheapest I could find, no frills.
I payed $8.81 for a .com for a year.

do they plaster adverts over everything if you forward that domain to different disk host ?
No not at all, its a proper registrar. AFAIK its only the free ones that do that.
I've had a couple from 123-reg.co.uk too.

There are a few cowboys out there, avoid Fasthosts/UKReg and GoDaddy. Both are in cahoots with SEDO and will sell your domain to them the minute your domain lapses, you then have to buy it back for several £100 (any reputable registrar will just let it lapse). I have first hand experience of this...quite a few times sadly.
I recommend Daily for all registrations, they're cheap and trustworthy.

No they don't - you get plenty of warning, but crucially your domain is automatically renewed unless you state otherwise.

Yes they are, and they do. Fact. Avoid!

Not looking to have a row, but we have over 200 domains with them, and not one has been sold on by SEDO. They all auto-renew and there have never been any issues in the 8 years we've been using them

Oh, avoid Names Co. too. I've had 20 or so domains with them since they were Phase 4, their renewal prices just get higher, and higher and the cheeky twunts charge to release your domain to a new registrar tag (which takes only a couple of seconds, is totally automated and costs them nothing).

We had about 100 domains with them, over the course of 12 months they sold 4 of them to Sedo the minute they lapsed. (due to client being slow to renew). Any other registrar will just let them lapse, (then when the site goes down and the customer realises you were serious, you can re-register). UKReg/Fasthosts have a deal with Sedo, they even send you a link to Sedo to buy the domain back!:smash: They really are dodgy cnuts, and don't even get me started on their hosting! (please don't tell me you host with them, I know stuff which would instantly fill your pants with brown)
EDIT : I would really recommend you move your domains elsewhere, we moved all our domains to Total Registrations, who were more expensive but at least they are trustworthy and had a partner program. I'm now contemplating moving our domains to Daily as they seem cheaper even at retail prices! (been using them personally for the last year or so since moving from Names Co. not had a single problem, and they don't charge to release domains if you do decide to move!)

We don't host with them as we have our own web servers, one at Telecity and one in-house.

I've always used 1and1.co.uk for Domains and apart from the last domain I registered being a bit tardy on the uptake I've had no problems. Don't use their hosting though
Got 6 domains with them and been a customer for 5 years :D

+1 for 1and1. I used them at my last gaff and they were fine for domains and hosting, just not the cheapest. Support was a bit sluggish when needed but otherwise fine.

Yeah, reading that back it looked like I was slagging off there hosting. I meant I don't use their hosting as I have it elsewhere. :D
