View Full Version : Ps3 - ylod
Damn it :(
Was playing Modern Warfare 2 this evening and during a game, the screen went black and the PS3 powered itself off.
I thought this was strange, so I powered it on, and it came on briefly (about 2 seconds) and then flashed Yellow once, then powered off and continued to flash red. Tried several times, but the same thing is happening :annoyed::annoyed:
Its out of warranty, so I may aswell buy the slimline
Quick question, Can I replace the HD's in the slimelines? I bought a 500gb internal drive that I installed in my original PS3 and it has LOADS of stuff on it.. Ideally I would like to carry this over to my new ps3?
Cheers,
Tim
PS - what am I going to do now that I wont have a PS3 for a couple of weeks LOL.
OMG Tim's PS3 is dead, how will he ever survive :wack:
HD should swap between units, but the fix is pretty easy I believe, there are guide on the net how to do it. Think its just some dry solder that needs fixing, and something to do with a heatgun/hair dryer. Think one of the easiest fixes is just pulling out the HD from the console and putting it back in resets something or another, I'd try that first then have a search on the net.
Im sure on watchdog a while back they were fixing them with a microwave or something??

get your self down a pc shop and get your self a mother bord mine was £20 brand new take the old one out and give it a bloody good clean because the amount of bust and crap in mine was unreal YLOD is due to over heating and the solder drying out on the cpu and gpu prossors so fit a new one and your sorted also ask a pc shop to back up your hard drive as you wont be able to use it unless you format it first as each hard drive is mached to each ps3

No they won't. They washed their hands of the YLOD affair.
You pay them £128 and they will swap your PS3 with a recon unit and that is the best you will get from them.
Tey the YLOD hairdryer fix and if you get it working take it to CEX and they are ATM giving up to £165 on a working PS3 fatty. Take the offer ticket to gamestation and they will better it by £1 so you can trade £166 on a slim.

bugger my 60GB warranty runs out in 4 days time :S
jees, i thought microsoft sucked at warranty stuff. I've heard a lot of pants things about sonys aftersales service being shite. Hope you get it sorted guys. Thats poor, to say the least, isnt it?:(
Im not in the UK, :(
Wont be for a while either.
I will try the hairdryer fix first...but Ive got a few amazon vouchers and I can reclaim VAT, so I could buy a 250gb slimline for about 160quid..... hmmmm
After watching that youtube vid I am a bit worried. When I've had mine on for hours on end and I try and turn it off I get that multi beep sound sometimes, now I know its verging on going ylod

Thats very interesting... I had this happen to me for ages (about 3 months) and thought nothing of it  - now I know lol

<<day of release :S I've had the multiple bleeping a few times:down:
you'd think the slim would have more problems with heating, however im basing this assumption on no knowledge of the slim exept its size
Right I'm off to see if I can blow my PS up :D
Although saying that I still have a fully functioning PS2 and they were not without their problems too.
Best of luck TAS

This is a new one.. I had to send back my original as it stopped reading discs. They sent me a new one out... just got to check to see if its still in warranty...

My brother has had the beeping thing a hanful of times - his seems to get really hot, the fan makes a right noise. Mine, on the other hand, is a later model and is SO much quieter, and hasnt beeped at all. Pretty sure i still got about 18 months of (extended) warranty too :)
Oh thats not good TAS.
I have never heard of YLOD and now two people from this forum get it in a week!
this 2 beep thing you mentioned is this like when you try to ejct a disk and there isnt one in? If it does this when your turning it of does this mean its nearly game over?
Also how long is the warranty on PS3's?
joeS13sx
05-01-2010, 23:44
mine did the beeping thing a few times before it died i wish i had took a photo of the inside of the heat sink and processors you couldn't see them for dust and crap even though i hover it out around the vents
it only seems like the 60G ps3's that suffer the most but they are nearly 3 years old now but i'd expected £400 to last longer than nearly 3 years:rolleyes:

I suspect trading standards would agree with you too, if mine goes ill contact them
Update....
Had a bit of work on today re: ps3.
I followed the guide as mentioned before, but my playstation is totally different to the one in the video, the basics are the same, but the screw points and some of the cables are in different places on the motherboard.. it wasnt hard to work out so me and a mate checked the motherboard, and there is no sign of heat scoring anywhere.
Everything looks fine . We cleaned it up and put it back together hoping the clean would solve the issue, but it still didnt work :( -
we did find some hidden menus..
1) If you hold down the eject and power button together, then switch the back on, you can eject the blu-ray disc (as mine was stuck inside) and the fan comes on too, not quite sure what this does, but it released my disc, which was a bonus.
2) hold down the power button until you hear a beep, a few more seconds then another 2 beeps happen in quick succession, release straight away and you are taken to a menu with about 7 different options. - only try this if you are experiencing problems!!!!
Luckily my mate has an old spare one, because his blu-ray stopped playing dvd's, so he ended up buying a new slimline.
The original plan was to put my working blu-ray drive in his ps3, then hopefully it would work OK, but we tried this and the blu-ray failed to work:annoyed:
I checked online and it seems you have to take the chip board off your blu-ray drive and install on the replacement blu-ray drive. I tried to do this, but the boards were different... :annoyed:
I took my mates old spare one home and for some reason the blu-ray will play games (if you try and play a dvd, the system throws a wobble and packs up)
OK. so I took out my 500gb upgraded drive from my ps3 and installed in my mates old ps3 and it immediately asked me to format the drive.... BUGGER!!!!! so ive lost all my music, and game demos, vids etc.. luckily I have that all backed up, so thats not a major issue.
The major issue is my profile.
I have created a user TAS200 (my original log in name) and followed the existing user options and it has reloaded all my trophies and friends etc, but I tried playing MW2, and it has reset all my stats?????????
Ive read online, that the stats are kept on the Infinity servers, so it should have re-sync'd all my stats???
has this happened to anyone else?? I dont want to start playing from scratch again, if there is an option to re-sync with infinity?
Cheers,
EDIT - IGNORE ME IM A NUMPTY!!!! - I didnt re-sync with infinity, I only got to the main menu and it said 0% complete... I then tried to go straight into a game, and it uploaded my profile... :wack:
Just ordered a new 250gb slimline
blu-ray player has just given up :( error code 80010514 - which basically means blu-ray disk drive is broken...
Well at least I managed to get 1hr and 30mins tonight LOL

It should get your stats from the server.
If you log on to someone else's playstation it works ok...
Ah well 1hr 30 is better than nothing i suppose.
How long will it take for your Slim to arrive to whatever part of the world your in?
EDIT: Just signed into PSN and its saying you are playing MW2, Demolition in Derail:confused:

If you put as much effort into fixing it as you do playing it then you should be fine :p :wack:

:o:wack:
It should be OK. it doesnt matter if we chop the case about abit and "force" bits in other areas, because as soon as my new one turns up, this one is a goner... Still should be fun doing it
I'll update you all tomorrow when I have completely shagged 2 PS3 :annoyed::thumbs::wave:
Have you contacted sony about getting it fixed? Mine was 3 months out of warranty (I told them 2) and they fixed my BD drive FOC as a good will gesture. They didn't ask for proof of purchase, just were I'd bought it from.
This was last april and I got the YLOD in December costing me ALL my data and £128 :(

No, I phoned Sony technical support, but hung up after 45mins on hold!!!
To be honest, its too late now, Ive already attempted to change the lasers and royally screwed up the loading mechanism... Ive now got to rebuild it and see what happens
I did note that my blu-ray laser had 2 lasers on it, but my mates only had 1, so im thinking it wont work anyway :( - but at least its a shot :)
I bought mine on release day time to take out the sony £5 a month protection scheme I think :whip:

Sony pulled that last year as it was being abused. i just missed out on signing up to it.
Sony are now making a fortune of the back of old 'fatty' owners with the £128 and a recon unit. I put a new laser in mine at the cost of £50 and was disgusted to find that the parts used on the orignal PS3 and the build is shocking compared to the orignal cost.

I (we) finally got the mechanism working, but when a Blu-ray is loaded, the motor makes a mechanical beep sound.
I plugged it in and checked to see if the blu-ray was working, but no :(
In order to fix this, all I need is to order a new blu-ray drive with the single laser (not the twin one - which is totally different in setup and action!) The Model is KES 400AAA / KEM 400AAA.
hmm.... just found this from the states? would this work (being NTSC format????)

About 70% are region free but it depends on the content provider on if they wish to encode the disc for a region. There are 3 regions set around the world but it is possible to hack a blu ray player (but not a PS3).

Ah got you. I know PAL and NTCS, and the Asian one (dont know what it is) but honestly I though 'ALL' blu Rays were region free.

Blue boy,
I checked your link and that only states the laser and metal case surrounding it. Im after the whole drive since the loading mechanism is should we say tempemental LOL
Ive got my eye on a few ebay auctions ending later today, so if I can pick up a drive second hand for less than 40quid, i will be happy.

Fair enough. Just remember that you will have no idea how many hours the laser and drive motor have already run and with the latest firmware updates pushing the older drives past their limits how long it will last.

Thats true.
I just won an auction. 44 quid including delivery.

Or I might sell it... dont know yet
cheers for the help anyway
