View Full Version : Blu Ray films and screen size?
well for christmas i treated myself to a samsung 50inch 1080p plasma tv
now i have had a ps3 for a while but have only just started to get blu ray films to play on it, now most i have seen have tha black bar at the top and bottom and this dosn't bother me, as soon as a bright image comes on the screen after the film the image of them dissapears,
but yeasterday i was watching the dark knight on blu ray and the screen size kept changing from the smaller size (with the black bars) to a full screen (usually when a big action scene came on) now the problem with it been a plasma and on dark movies there was a "image" of the lines still on the screen so the edges are darker, but only until a bright picture comes back:confused:
anyway is there a setting in the playstation to force them to fill the screen all the time? as im a little worried about damaging it and its slightly annoying:annoyed:
Actually it's probably a setting on your TV causing the problems

Not as far as i know cos the screen sizes with black bars are anamorphic (2.35:1).
Have you 'run in' your screen or just started using it? Some plasmas are worse at screen burn than others but they all have the issue. how fast does it clear up?
This may help
Does the panel need 'running in' to prevent 'screen burn'?
Across ALL screens it is generally recommended that screens are "looked after" in the first 100-200 hours. Turn down brightness and contrast to approx 50% of maximum settings or less, and take it out of dynamic mode or equivalent. Avoid static images for more 1-2 hours where possible during the running in period.
tried all options on the tv, it only happens with blu ray films tho, not the media center pc or even ps3 games?
also when the tv puts the bars on they are grey not black- to help against burn in I think?
I am in the process of "running it in" even tho the instructions say nothing about it, I have been using it on half settings now for about 90 hours, going to give it at least 250 before i crank it all up :)
the burn isn't bad at all, dissaperars as soon as a bright image comes on, its only if you go from the black var to a very dark image its noticeable.
so will it get better as its run in?

Best thing to do is go onto AVforums as they will have a thread about the model you have purchased with loads of useful info.
It's the Dark Knight, they filmed some of the scenes on IMAX and they cropped the 4:3 film to 1.78:1 and the rest of the film was 35mm and shown at 2.35:1. Nothing is wrong with your screen :)
Dave
As above, your TV is fine. Cropping was intentional.

What part are the imax bits?
The bits that fully fill the screen:thumbs:
I didn't notice any screen switching (or change in picture aspect ratio) going on when I watched it (Pioneer bluray player hooked up to Pioneer 50" plasma BTW) . But then, I usually switch the display mode to "Dot by Dot" as it's slightly better for 2.35:1 films than when on Auto
is this only on the blu ray version ?

You definitely have it, you just didn't notice :)

I believe it is as my DVD version doesn't do it.

Cool, thanks guys, it is only the dark knight film I have noticed it on :).
Now to side track a bit, playing these slightly wider aspect ratio films on my screen won't have any adverse effect? Will it? As I thought the only "problem" with plasma was burn in from bright/high contrast imiges held static for time?
ESP now I don't want go back to LCD after seeing mine side by side, also in the shop it was next to a LCD of a slightly smaller size but 3times the cost and the picture is far far better :)

When you still see the image slightly in the black line area, this is knwon as residual image, it's not burn.
I found using Pioneers plasma washer on my panasonic plasma when I first got it has really helped. I don't seem to get it now.

Plasma burn is different to residual image retention.
Residual image retention is where you can see the image slightly on a black screen.
Burn is where the pixels aren't as bright where a static image has been displayed for some time. Most plasmas these days can take several weeks of a static image without burning apparently.

Just looked at that link. It's a Super Video CD / DVD that has static images at 720P..... hmmmmmm:indiff:
Seriously, get the Pioneer Plasma Washer, from the people who have made the best plasmas, it's a graduated scrolling white bar, can't get any better :)
It's already got a gradiated White bar in the burn in protection menus :)
looking forward to when it's run in now, can't wait pump the contrast etc up see what it's really like :)

Ive had my Samsung 1080p 50" for a year now and it still has a bit of retention... mostly the awful old Sky planner... but these are awesome displays for the money! Totally subjective, but the way it shifts large blocks of colour about just 'feels' so much better than any of the LCD's that ive watched. the built in screen tools have the scrolling grey bars to help burn, but when running mine in i just left an untuned analouge station playing snow overnight for about a week.
Ive one of the 720p Samsunds at one of my schools running a powerpoint, in the first week of having it, the presentation was paused on the school logo - bright yellow background and dark green logo, this was left from monday till friday! noone thought of turning off the screen or restrting the presentation. I thought the thing was fadgered, it retained the image good!! but after I had explaned that they may have killed it and they just have to live with the ghost, we fired off the presentation and the following friday (my weekly visit) the image had gone, even displaying the 100% white test screen :)
I've had my Pioneer plasma (KRP-500A) for a year now and neither bothered with 'burning it in' or suffered any image retention problems whatsoever.
To be honest, the picture was so bloody good "out of the box" that I couldn't be bothered trying to make it any better :wack:

Don't do that, get a THX DVD and properly set it up. Too much contrast can make it look a bit fake / LCD like if you know what I mean
LCDs in the shop have contrast wound up to make them look vivid, plasmas generally have a much more natural palette :)

My Panasonic G15 is the same, I turn it on it looks awesome, I turn it off no image retention (it did for the first day though, but since then I've had nothing). I did crack out the THX DVD and it looks even better now.
All this burn-in stuff for modern plasmas is nonsense in my opinion

My Panasonic has a shop mode, I'm guessing others will have it too - as soon as that was turned off - the picture looked really good - a little tinkering with the THX DVD and it's simply amazing.
Watching the Dark Knight really showed the strengths of plasma, the scene where the joker is in the interview room and you can only see his face in the darkness had my mates jaw dropping compared to his and his house mates LCD :D

the pan shop mode, turns it to dynamic picture settings, and allows the shop keeper to have the telly reset every 5 minutes so if people play about and make it look dull in store, they dont have to keep resetting it.
still loving my g10 only i want BIGGER now :D

I think you'll find that Pansonic & Pioneer are not really a problem, but plenty of the other manufacturers still suffer with IR problems. Have heard of some quite poor cases on Samsungs & LG's, with only a short amount of menu use causing significant IR.
I have had my Panasonic 50G10 for a couple of weeks and have kept the contrast & brightness down within that time, but even watching letterbox films, gaming, etc - I have never seen any IR at all, even getting right up to the screen.

Only time I've suffered from Image retention was after falling asleep and leaving it on all night on a DVD menu.

Luckily my DVD player turns itself off after 30mins of inactivity :)
