View Full Version : What's the worst car ever built?
I don't mean stuff like Trabants or Wartburgs (remember them?). I mean stuff from recognised mainstream manufacturers, who just happened to produce a total lemon.
My vote goes to the Saab 9.3 Aero for being the scrabblies, torquesteeriest, most evil handling piece of shit I've ever had the misfortune to drive.
Well it does use a Vauxhall chassis JB what do expect!!
:)
Focus RS ??
They had the chance to build a great car and yet came up with something undriveable on British roads :(
As for SAAB's, sorry but it's got to be the 9-3 Viggen. Makes the Aero seem sure footed.

I drove some of the early development cars - the torque steer was *really* scarey !

What about the old Princess then. Like the All-agro but as it was a bigger car you had more to go wrong with it
Suzuki X90

Most 4x4's are pointless. This is beyond pointless, bordering on plain evil :(
EDIT: Damn it the above two posts weren't there when I started writing this. Shows they must be hated though!!
Who made that weird awful X90 4wd looking thing that looked like a jacked up micra with a boot.
Hideous. Think it was fwd only too JB

... and picnic tables which folded down from the back of the front seats, complete with cup holders - nice !
Yes - that Mercedes that Clarkson sold his Ferrari for. I think it is still a gay car - theres loads of them in London (like all German cars - BMW and Merc - far too many of them, hogging our oxygen and road space) as well!
All either driven by wide boys or bufty middle eastern types...
Mercedes only make one sports car, and that is the old gull winged 50's sex beast car.. they are old mans poofmobiles.
And not even that well made any more - Ive seen a few broken down in central london.... haha..
Rant over.. I just thik they are not fine cars - theyre not quite right.. Mind you the SLR which isnt in production yet nearly gets the right balance between the old 50's gull wing version up to date in a credible way...
Blah blah.. my tuppence worth over. Yeah, and any 3 series, theyre common as muck and new ones are driven by certain types of people, and old ones are driven by certain other types of people..
So I will be quiet now..

I know you've been naming non-modded cars, but surely anything with an aftermarket "bad boy" bonnet must be one of the worst cars on the road?

Dad used to have a Renault 12 when they were new and, at the time, they were a decent car. Far better in terms of handling, comfort and silence then a Cortina or Marina.

Can't help but wonder how your car u'd stack up against my E class though.
Well my S14a's faster than my mates 420 CLK, there just heavy lardy arse cars, or in my mates case, a V8 Couch!
Nothing wrong with big lardy sofas ;)
Give me 170+mph in near total silence all day. That's what I like about my couch :D

agree..
horrible horrible cars that sound like washing machines..
no redeeming features at all.. other than rear wheel drive, and rear mounted engine.. but all that becomes irrelavant when you add the beetles suspension and chassis..
awful cars.. beaten only IMO by an austin metro and yugo..
James
My first car - Austin Metro 1.0L. It was shite.

My mum had an Ital and an Allegro, she loved them.
:o :o :o
This be a JB thread so being carefully worded :notworthy
A bad auto gearbox can turn a perfectly good car into a total dog.
Mum had a Mazda 323 which could be fun, an aunt had an auto which was the pits. Once it got to 3rd gear it refused to come down again. Drive up a hill and it would struggle down to walking pace until you booted it into kickdown.
Dad's XM diesel auto works fine but his old petrol auto was the pits.
From what I've read, Focus and Mazda 6 autos turn "worthy" cars into crap and there must be others.

The reverse is also true. Manual boxes usually ruin Jags and Mercs because they are slow and baulky. :)
thers been a few bad suggestions but have you all forgoten about the austin maestro?
http://www.motorbase.com/pictures/contributions/990720//sml_85_austin_maestro_hl.jpg
only thing a maestro is fit for is to be burned out by a bunch of thieving kids on a football pitch
mg maestro - urgh
8-10 years from now this is what we'll be sayin bout crappy MG ZR ZT's and all that rover 25/45 rubbish with plastic crap stuck onto it and an MG badge

Not only has my mum owned an Ital and an Allegro, but she also owned 2 maestros and now owns a rover 25.:o
The 25 ain't too bad for what it is.
In no particuular order:
Austin Allegro
Austin Maxi
Austin Princess/Ambassador
(do you see a pattern emerging here)
Volvo 340 (just for variety)
FSO polonez (looked crap and was assured by one block who had one, actually was crap)
Like I've said in the past I've owned not one but two Allegros

Naah - Ive driven two - first one was a shed anyway, but the second was all lowered, race bodykit, stuff done to the engine etc. etc. and it was without a doubt the worst vehicle I have ever piloted. It was uncomfortable, noisy, unresponsive, felt like it had no suspension at all, failed to go round corners at anything other than walking pace and was a bitch to start. Even the fappin indicators didnt work
Sorta turned me against them

He only posted what the rest of us were thinking ;)
Worst car to drive - FSO Polonez. Indescribable. No contest. And I've driven some shite in my time.
Second worst - Vitara wide boy on 335s or something. A fork lift handles better.
Worst idea for a car - Alfa Arna/ Cherry Europe. Jap styling blandness with Italian electrics.....probably a simple admin error was responsible for that one. Drove quiet well though, considering...
Worst looking car - Any current fat-arsed Renault is automatically in the running, but for me the Nissan Figaro is streets ahead. Description would be pointless and inadequate.... but the words "three year old" and "visually impaired" seem to go quite well with "retard" with respect ( ) to the designer.
Worst car overall - Citroen Dyane. The 2CV is an atrocious car in it's own right and scores highly in all the above categories, but it makes you laugh when you turn corners, which the FSO doesn't ( it makes you pray!), it's a bad idea for a car but at least it fulfilled it's design brief, however dumb, and it is pug-ugly to boot, but still manages a modicum of charm albeit of the Mary Poppins variety.
It's not a car, for one. It has an engine that belongs in a Bleriot or a lawn mower, and a stupid dizzy. It only has two springs between four wheels. The front suspension is pointing the wrong way. The body belongs on a soft-top caravan. The seats are deck chairs. The gear lever is missing, the knob being stuck to an extension of the selector shaft. The list is long....
And then there's the rust, which makes it's presence known by allowing the car to fold in half.
And then there's the people who drive them, mostly in the mistaken belief that the cheap running costs mean they are doing the planet a favour.
The Dyane is the "luxury" version of the 2CV, and proof positive of the phrase, "You can't polish a turd."
Unless you just wanted to wipe the charm away of course....
I notice quite a few people have been mentioning older cars which isn't really fair because even an Austin Princess, which was designed in the 70's and built by a load of tea drinking jobsworth Brummies is better than the Hyundai Atoz. In fact even if you didn't make allowances for the age of the Princess it would still be better!

ugliest car...

Yeah that Nissan Figaro or as clarkson would say" oh dear" so people actually import this as well? I think it looks a bit like that volvo columbo drives too.

No mate. Citroėn with it's Traction Avant (Front Wheel Drive) was churning them out from Slough long before the Mini was first thought of.
And I'm pretty sure one of the board clever dicks will find a mass produced FWD car from long before that :D
Have always wanted a TA though, which is weird.

Renault 16. My old man used to have one. Literally never worked, broke down on his way home from buying it. After being repaired a few times it always broke down soon after, so it stayed in the garden until it got towed away..
