View Full Version : Sony or Samsung LCD
Went to the local currys for a look at some tv's. I'm getting a PS3 so im told lcd is what to go for?
From advise from the sales guy and having a look at a few in the shop the two i narrowed it down to are the sony bravia kdl40w5500 and the samsung le40650.

My budget is £700. Not a massive gameplayer but like cod and gt. Watching sports is what it will be used most for and movies on the ps3. Sky is normal SD.
I don't know much about tv's. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Would an LED lcd tv be much better then my choices. Was looking at the samsung UE407000 but is £200 extra. Would it be worth the extra money?

I've got the Samsung 7020 and it's awesome. They're probably much of a muchness but the Samsung was the best IMO in side by side comparisons in Richer Sounds when showing the same image. Get the highest refresh rate you can, the 100Hz makes a really nice difference over the standard 60Hz stuff.
i wouldnt buy a LED lcd no, yes they look nice, but other than that its just a slim lcd, for that money though, Id be buying a panny txp42g10 plasma, and yes i game on mine just fine.
The only reason people say not it the very small chance you may get screen burn, but unless you leave a static image on screen for a day it wont happen.
plus you get a much faster response screen of 0.001ms and a 600hz refresh rate if you realy beleave it matters, and a 2.000.000- 1 contrast ration
plus a 5yr garrenty if bought from the right place.

First off Emmett you are old enough to know better than to listen to the staff in Currys, my parents dogs know more about TVs than the entire assembled staff of Currys from around the world.
Secondly I'm not even going to look at the links and I'm going to say go for the Samsung because Sony make the most overpriced and underspecced tat i the world.
i am sure Samsung make all the Sony panels
i am sure Samsung make all the Sony panels
I've also been told that by someone working in the industry.

yeah, the first guy was so full of shit it was unreal, trying to sell me some piece of crap until i started to ask him basic question about upscaling sd to hd, delay time for playing first person shooter games online or even motion blur watching sports, he hadn't a clue really
He got another young guy that seemed to know what he was talking about, and gave his honest opinions from experience. He personally owned the samsung himself and loves cod like myself, but advised the sound was crap but said most lcd's sound crap anyways. Maybe was trying to sell me a sound system aswell but didn't offer to show me any
Tbh, i personally liked the sony, but one of my friends said they give some sort of trouble.
As for plasmas and screen burn, wouldn't rev counters and the like be static images as are in the same position every race. A day could pass easily playing the same came over the xmas. I don't know would i like to risk the chance of if happening.

I have had the 50 in that model now for over an year and love it. Just under £1000 with 5 year warranty from richer sounds themselves.

Agreed - I have the Panny TX-P42G15B plasma and it's bloody awesome - gaming is wicked too. Mine is used all the time with my Xbox
G10 is within budget

Went along to have a look at the G10 today as suggested, i think i have found the winner  Massive thumbs up for the suggestion :thumbs:
Still have a slight worry about screen burn though. It was suggested to leave some tv programes on for a while after gaming to help prevent screenburn. Does this work or worthwhile doing

My G15 displays a tiny amount after gaming, but clears pretty quickly (within a couple of mins) :)

It should have a screen burn protection menu
My samsung Pixel shifts and the amount can be altered depending upon your choice.
I have it set to maximum and it seems fine.
I do get a slight issue when using pause on the Sky box though but this clears after a few minutes.
There is a feature on the samsung that can be used weekly to clear the screen of any burn though, not sure if yours will have that? wost case set to unused Chanel and leave run for a few minutes will go to solid blue or white screen and sort it out

theres not a screen burn menu. but set your conection to game mode and if it does burn, people say to turn it to analouge mode and leave the snowy screen for a while to remove it, the first couple hundred hours are the time where screen burn will happen the worst.
mines just a week old now and i havent spotted any.

TBH Honest I think panels are so much better than they used to be, screen burn is not really an issue like it was. Just use common sense and don't leave your game paused for ages. Mind you the G165 that I have automagically notices when the input signal hasn't had any activity for a while and dulls the screen - I'm guessing the G10 will have the same feature

What an ignorant load of bo11ocks that is. :wack:
Two staff in my local Curry's are superb on their knowledge and experience.
I have to admit though, the panasonic may well have a great picture, but it's not the nicest flat panel tv. It still has to win on performance though.
I was told to stay away from the sony because of backlight issues. The same person recommended the phillips 7407. Too many choices.....
Asking about playing games on the G10 in currys, the lad siad "screen burn won't be an issue until about 6 years of use" He couldn't even stick on a hd movie for me to view. They wouldn't sell water in the desert god love them. :annoyed:
Just another last question about screen burn, i watch alot of football, which will have the score displayed for the whole match aswell as sky sports logo, the mrs watches the living chanel and the kids channels will all have logo's displayed all the time aswell.
Could this cause screen burn on a plasma or would it be an issue at all
Edit: sky sports logo could be displayed from 9am until 10pm on a sunday.

i work in Euronics, and i can tell you Samsung is rubbish... Dreadful sound quality and wouldn't be the most reliable.. I had a 50 inch samsung for a month and hated it, traded it for a panasonic txp50x10, terrific tv.... also have a 42" panny in the bedroom, same model though, the x10, comes with a 5 year warranty
if your only choosing out of these two, go for sony.. but strectch your budget if you can and get a panasonic, you wont regret it...
Oh, and people with panasonic tvs, change the picture mode to game mode, these circulates the gas more and prevents screen burn
I have had 2 samsungs and we have a sony downstairs. I adore my samsung although the sound is rubbish. Its been far more reliable than the sony

seriously??? we sell quite a lot of samsung at work, but it seems half the customers are comming back with problems, mostly screen faults... saying that, they have mostly been plasmas and not LCD's, but still... i always try to sell a cinema system with them, the sounds is really THAT BAD... turn it up over half way and you get nothing but crackling...
the sony sets that we sell seem to get a brilliant feedback from customers..

Yea i love it, 7.1 surround sound is next on my list though!
I guess you mostly see the bad reviews of tv's though, working in the shops as no one would bring back a tv that worked. Or maybe im just lucky!
I wanna upgrade it for something bigger soon anyway, think im addicted to buying tv's:(

suppose that would be true.. but some customers do return to buy other stuff and would comment on how good their tv is... But if your buying a new 1 i reccomnd panasonic 100%
or pioneer if you can find/afford it... we dont sell them but feck they are good. my mates aul boy has 1, 50" plasma, with all the surrond jazz, £4.5k worth :O the remote alone cost £850 lol... touch scren remote, very snazzy
i work in Euronics.:
which shops that then as i work in a euronics store aswell  i was a runner up in the samsung elite comp and bagged a free blu ray player :D
Would you notice much of a difference watching a blueray with 24p playback compared to 3/2 pulldown?
Doing some research the panny g10 is supposed to flicker quite badly when set to 24p at 48hz, but only some people seem to notice it.
never noticed it myself tbh, ive ran 24p from a dmp-bd60 and also a sc-bt200/205 and its a perfect picture.
:)
the panny plasmas do have a slight flicker tho most noticable on white backgrounds.

Pretty sure the bd60 runs 24p at 96hz, and it is good on the v10.
what runs as 48hz?
what runs as 48hz?
To watch a blueray in true 24p on the g10 you have to set it to 48hz manually, which will cause flicker. Otherwise it will just play it at standard tv 60hz refresh rate.
Another trip to the tv store to see the difference between 24p and 3:2 i think...
Btw, if you buy online off amazon, pixmania ect and there is something faulty with the tv, do you have to pay to have it sent back and checked, or where do you stand
Jezz_S13
22-12-2009, 20:41
Not sure where you stand, but I'd expect Amazon to be pretty good with stuff like that.
Didn't realise the g10 only does 48hz p24, seems like a good excuse to buy the V10 instead.

Not that I've noticed - I normally notice flicker as I suffer with headaches from it, so was worried about the stories of these panels, but as I say my G15 doesn't seem to flicker. Had the THX disc out and calibrated it as best as I could without the tint etc, and I'm very pleased with the picture.

:D i like you style, i was thinking the same today. It would be nice having it thx calibrated and a refresh rate of 96hz for 24p, but is it worth at least another £300 extra

That's a good question, if you have the £300 handy then I guess it is.
I suppose, without buying Pioneer, you'd be reasonably safe in the knowledge that it's possibly the best TV you can get at the minute.
That said I've read a few reviews where the G10 gets a better black score than the V10.
Personally I think the black argument is a bit weak, and is just propagated by the pioneer fanbois.

Well I bought this from Ricehr Sounds, and I'm blown away by how good it is, especially for the money.
I'ev not hooked up the 360 Elite yet, but just on normal television the image is pin sharp and superb.

I got that Samsung 40" from Currys a month ago and no complaints! picture is sharp and looks great with my PS3 and Blu Ray discs. Sound is not that good though as has been said? can't place my finger on it but not that clear. Paid £530 for it though as they had an offer on which was too good to refuse!
I have an old (3 years) samsung LCD and I love it, would definitely buy another :)

I have the blue glasses, you won't get perfect blue lines as Panasonic "forgot" to give the UK market access to the tint control, but the setting I used looked the best I could get it without the option.
The only way around it is to break into the service menu, but it'll invalidate the warranty :(
Still pleased with the results though.

I'm getting a ps3 for blaying blueray as it's updateable and i hear it plays games too ;)
I went for a look today to see if i could see any flicker at 48hz 24p. Curry's are not allowed to change the settings on there tv's or give any blueray demo's
Three other shops didn't know how to change it from 60hz to 48hz, but i got a demo watching transformers and it's amazing even at 3:2 pulldown  I'm waiting for the sales to get it but they said they won't be coming down much and they may not even be in stock :(
Does true 24p make much of a difference
Slightly OT but i just got a new Samsung 32" 4 series LCD screen, Do i need to calibrate that or what? I just plugged in the Xbox and off i went :o
My set up for TVs and monitors is pretty simple,
I just turn both brightness and contrast to zero, then put contrast to max, increase brightness until things look good without the blacks turning into "greys"
job done.
