its comming up 6 years soon :(

i really have only just got into his music....being to young to realise his music when he was alive....

was there any motives behind his killing ?
what was the reaction like in music cirules

was he ever that good and was it hyped up after his death

i think alot of the names of his tracks in some of the albums make me think "ready to die" "Suicidal LThoughts" "Who Shot Ya"

what was the link with Tupac in all of this ?

BIGGIE was the man :(

I love all his albums

Basically Biggie and 2Pac were mates and did some tracks together and then something got inbetween them (money I think) I can't remember exactly and they fell out and were in rival gangs.

Theres conspiracy theories about Biggie and 2Pacs deaths because of the predictice lyrics etc.

Do a google, theres loads of info on this :)

ive always liked tupacs rhymes more than biggies too, altho there are a few of biggies that i think are great, tupac was much more consistant IMO.
you cant beat "Picture Me Rollin" on a hot summers night
i never liked puff daddy's style, ( just look at what he's done to Nas ! :( ) and i could see what tupac was saying about puffy getting his face on every biggie video and in the end rhyming on them too.

tupac r.i.p ? :notworthy

anyway, its all in the past, DMX is where its at :D

2Pac was the greatest :notworthy

So whos read all the stuff on him not being dead and the 7 day theory, some of it is quite spooky and gets you thinking.

Anyone read 'Have Gun Will Travel', its all about Deathrow and is a bloody good read.

Still love Ice Cube, cant beat 'it was a good day' when the sun is out

Been into Hip Hop since like 91 when I was 13, Ready to Die and Me against the word were great albums!!

I dunno who's rhymes I prefer but I think that their are some lyrcists around now who are to biggie and 2pacs standards, people like Mos Def, Luda, etc.

I'm into a lotta old school rap from early 90's like Main Source, Del tha funky homosapien, Black Street, Gang Star, EPMD, etc.

bloody hell its great to know that not only have i got fellow breadrins into their 200sx's but seems we got loadsa hip-hop heads on here 2!In regards to Tupac and the is he/isnt he alive debate heres what I know about his little cryptic clues, and besides we all know hes alive and well in cuba waiting to come back as part of the 7 year theory, right?!! :D

Anyways back in like 95 Tupac dropped an album called "Makavelli" which also had a cartoon rendtition of him crucified on a cross - his own death was more than a preoccupation with him, it was a motivating fascination. Makavelli was an italian scholar and master of war who basically preached that to destroy your enemies and conqueor your world, the ultimate weapon in war and politics is to fake your own death, fool your enemies, dissapear and then come back and swiftly dispose of enemies in secret. Tupac took the moniker 'Makavelli' which has continually fuelled the rumours that his death was faked.
The fake death scenario is also pumped up by looking at various coroners photos of the deceased 'Tupac' - very hazy and black and white images that apparantly show an unrecognisable bald black male, who DOESNT HAVE THE SAME TATTOOS as Tupac!!!
*******fingers now aching, so ill give someone else a chance to put something into this thread, and ill get back 2 kickin the spiel later!!************ :p ;)

Tupac was and still is the king of Hip-Hop :notworthy :notworthy

Biggie was no way as good but some of Biggies tunes were just designed to be blasted in your car
NOTORIOUS THUGS springs to mind - 'they call me biggie biggie...'

You have to listen to 'Hit em Up' by 2pac. Its a full song dedicated to cussing Biggie and Bad Boy Records - "'F*ck biggie, F*ck bad boy as a staff, record label and a crew and if you wanna be down with bad boy - F*uck u 2"
You have to listen to this song. I think its the best Hip Hop tune ever.

ahhh brings back memories of my college days

Tupac wasnt a very technically gifted rapper, but what he lacked in skills he more than made up for in persona, character and writing ability,he is more than the black elvis he is the architypal model for a generation of urban wasted youth really aint he.....it was his persona and charisma that unfortunately lead to his death

crackdownuk
05-06-2003, 00:10
:) both excellent rapper, but maybe 2 pac was just that bit better, the lyrics are so good:finger: My favourite tune has to be "wonder why they call you bitch" what a great song, very hard hitting..............some of puffy (the remix master)daddy stuff is okay especially been around the world VIDEO as it has J-LO in:D :D and mo money mo problems GREAT:D

We will miss you 2pac + BIG:cry:

now we have to listen to jay-z and nas, talk about each other.........:(

hadyn
05-06-2003, 00:11
u gotta remember that Tupac was trained as a BALLERINA!!
and that is the gospel!but u also gotta take into consideration that his mom was a major league crack head as well as a black panther!

sunnyzx
05-06-2003, 00:12
I agree with hadyn. 2pac was all attitude. His songs were all about how he's a 'thug' and he concentrated on all the negative things in his life. He was proud of being a poor black thug from the streets. This is why so many people connected with him

Eminem uses 2pac style of rapping. He concentrates on all the bad stuff - white, trailer trash etc, thats the reson so many people connect with Eminem.

They both use the negative to bring out positive. Im not comparing eminem to 2pac

hadyn
05-06-2003, 00:14
Tupac also went to acting school when he lived in New York - so that poor ass thug from the street aint strictly 'real', he did dabble in a bit of crack dealing tho when he moved over to south central LA. His biggest crime in terms of getting love, was that he was New York born and bred, and basically traitored New York to move over to LA and represent the West Coast - and that made him a lot of enemies, a lot of enemies on NY streets and 'entertainers' like puff daddy and mobb deep

Biggy Smalls on the other hand is poverty made rich.....

sunnyzx
05-06-2003, 00:20
No way man - Biggie went to a private school Have you ever seen Biggies mom. Shes like the sweetest lady. She is always saying how good life he had
Biggie was the kid in school with all the funcky stuff

2pac didnt go to some big acting school, he went to some cheap ass school. Both of Pac's parents were black panthers, mom was a crack head. He was the real thing man.

(I cant believe Im arguing over this again - spent 2 years at college fighting with mates over this
:D )

hadyn
05-06-2003, 00:22
okay lets ignore the pub talk, but u sure ur not getting confused with sean 'puff daddy' combs's mom???puff daddy went to a top afro american college and is basically upper middle class as hell - he likes 2 act the part, but can very rarely back it up when the action hots up, hence the gun case when shyne started shooting for that idiot, and ending up doing time for puff ****sta

sunnyzx
05-06-2003, 00:29
Im definately talking about Biggies mom - She trying to get all this justice for her son

I stopped really listening to music years ago. Sure I might download tunes and play em in the car. But never really sit down for long periods really LISTENING to music. The albums just dont seem as good

heh i would just like to say that Makavelli was no master of war at all, he was more a theorist, and particularly he wasnt a hard man by any means, more a coward with more bark than bite, its mostly hype that sees peoplle recognise him as some "i will kill before being killed" type of guy, he would say stuff, he wouldnt actually go out and kick ass, not a master at all IMO:|

a) don't you mean Machiavelli?
b)
c) I've never got hiphop or really rap. I mean, black music? F*** black music man. F*** white music. You ut a person open, you get a heart, a liver, a spleen. F*** what colour they are on the outside.
To me, hiphop has always been about "We're black, etc etc" and i'm sorry, that just don't conenct. people are people, ya know? Maybe I listening to the wrong shit, maybe I not listening right. But it just doesn't make that connection, and usually coz of the race angle. If that makes sense. I don't care if you're black, white, or any shade in between. You got something to say, I'll listen. if you only want to talk about ho's, money and being a thug, I'll pass - iget enough of that wandering around Crawley from the white kids who wish they were black. Why does colour matter -will someone please explain this to me?

hadyn

been a hip hop head since i got my copy of all means necassary (BDP) back in 1988, well unless u count salt with a deadly pepa from 87:)
Biggie was a talented rhymer and was technically more skilled than tupac, but overall tupac did the better work,, until his mother ruined his name with the endless utterly poor music brought out since his death!
Biggies ready to die album is great when it came out and some of his earlier stuff was good too when he was known as Biggie smalls (party & bullsh*t rocks!!!) , but everything after ready to die is very inferior and it coincided with sean coombs getting too big for his boots.
I could rant about how hip hop died as a decent music back in about 1995, but i guess its just different now, and sadly on the whole lacks the realness of the early music, its all about the money they say they have and the flash cars, thats not what it used to be about!! but its a business now so they are appealing to the people who will buy the most ( Kids)

if u want to hear some of what hip hop really is, then look for stuff like BDP, EPMD, the roots, Public enemy, Pharcyde, Common, talib qweli, Gang starr. Organized Konfusion, thats real hip hop!!

US hip hop might be just chart music now, but its still real and still reletively underground over on this side of the pond, there is plenty of well skilled emcees, dj's. if u want te feeling of what real hip hops like done by people who love there music, then check out brits like Braintax, Aspects, Taskforce, Lewis Parker, Blak Twang, the legend Rodney P, Life, Skinnyman, Jehst, they all do real hip hop, most can relate to, not like nowdays american b*ll*cks, Ja Rule, 50 cent, lil kim, Canibus, etc etc etc, just quit and stop selling out yor music, bunch of talentless hip hop murderers, send um to the chair!!!:D

now thats my rant on the soapbox done for another day, need to get it out my system, it just winds me up when i remember how great it was! anyway, i still got it all on tape, cd, whatever so they cant take the good times away :)
yours faithfully
old timer B'boy ( or just an ageing one with rose tinted shades ):D

aka-coley
05-06-2003, 01:42
and starionman, i can appreciate why u say about it being black music and all that, and how u dont get it, but i think the sort of hip hop u would have likely hae heard would be the bullsh*t that ets on the radio or mtv, most ofit is bollocks, and not what hip hop is.
and the colour thing is no issue in this country, hip hop is predominatly white music here, u go to a hip hop nite at aclub here, and white is the majority by far, and many of our emcees, and almost all the dj's are white bys who just love there music.

And stateside whether people like the Source writers disagree or not, but the most talented rhymer of his generation is a white boy (eminem) he is creative, origina land a great story teller, all the stuff missing for so long over there, but unfortunately( wel not for his bank account ) he is all the kids favourite so he gets looked on as a chart rapper, its a shame

aka-coley
05-06-2003, 01:56
Hadyn,i am pretty sure tupac went to Oakland went he went west as i remember him in the late 80's up to 91, being one of Digital Undergrounds occasional emcee, and they were an Oakland group.
if u want to talk hear tupacs music, only 3 albums should be mentioned, 2pacolypse now, strictly for my N*ggas and me against the world, all down hill from there!

and good choice haydn, hip hop dont get no better than Paid in Full, an all time classic!!!!!
Oh the good ole days :D
But great music never grows old, and that never will

Kev
05-06-2003, 03:52
2pac was the man, biggie was......... ok
poof daddy, wat a w*nk, getting rich of biggies name, period!
Ill be missin u?? wayt a load of shit, should have been ill be gettin rich off ur name.

Dr.Dre still does it for me, though none of his recent stuff comes close to "the chronic" imo, its in me car just now, but then so is 2001.
ice cube, "today was a good day", class tune, and "u can do it" oh lovely vid of them all shakin there asses mmmmm... mmmmm yummy!

NWA, "automobile", and "she swallowed it" still make me laugh

oh and u gotta love a bit of LL cool J "doin it and doin it and doin it well"

Anyway, no-one has said whether they believe or disbelieve the 7 day theory.. its a bit far fetched really, but then i spose we will find out in septemer (i think)

best tunes for me were:-
hit em up
picture me rollin
i get around
gansta party
I aint mad at ya
straight ballin
Keep ya head up (with the outlaws)
Stairin at the world through my rearview (on top of phil collins "in the air tonight")
And the softer ones too actually
changes
till the end of time
unconditional love

And the tribute song by naughty by nature "mourn u till we join u" gives me shivers, as does "dear mama"

Anyone seen the clip of 2pacs version of the 1st shooting?
I got it from win mx as a dl of gansta party its got him walking in on biggie and poof daddy, its pretty funny actually, was haydens comment of "bayby bayby" that reminded me.

Kev

Yeah their is no doubt that 2pac and Biggie were great rappers but people bit them up all tha time cos their dead and just jump on the band waggon of the love dead musics club cos it's kool 2, it's tha same with Kurt Cobain, Bob Marley, Jim Morrison, etc which is a pitty really cos it makes hardcore fans that liked the music before they died go off the music cos little kids start listennin to it cos it's 'Kool'.

I gotta agree with Coley cos Rap is getting too commercial, kids walkin round singin Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay Z, Dre, etc sayin their into hip hop when they know jack about it, also like Coley said the true artists out their are people like EPMD, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Gang Star (Guru), Jurassic 5.

Their are some good new tallent though, people like Philly's Most Wanted, Luda, Pharrell William (gold finger, everythin he touch turns to gold, lol).

lol, I'm shut up now.

out of the two..... tupac has always been my favourite, not just for his music or his acting, but also for his poetry....

And 2Morrow

Today is filled with anger
fueled with hidden hate
scared of being outcast
afraid of common fate
Today is built on tragedies
which no one wants 2 face
nightmares 2 humanities
and morally disgraced
Tonight is filled with rage
violence in the air
children bred with ruthlessness
because no one at home cares
Tonight I lay my head down
but the pressure never stops
knawing at my sanity
content when I am dropped
But 2morrow I c change
a chance 2 build a new
Built on spirit intent of Heart
and ideals
based on truth
and tomorrow I wake with second wind
and strong because of pride
2 know I fought with all my heart 2 keep my
dream alive

my favourite song has to be i ain't mad at cha....
and i have about 4 films with him in, unfortunately packed as we are tryin to sell our house....

this to me is the most powerful of his poetry:

In the Event of My Demise

In the event of my Demise
when my heart can beat no more
I Hope I Die For A Principle
or A Belief that I had Lived 4
I will die Before My Time
Because I feel the shadow's Depth
so much I wanted 2 accomplish
before I reached my Death
I have come 2 grips with the possibility
and wiped the last tear from My eyes
I Loved All who were Positive
In the event of my Demise

straight outta compton still gets play in my ride :D true gangsta rap just like early ice T stuff, up to original gangster and the all time great geto boyz, so under rated as people only remember there ott stuff, but listen to six feet deep, damn it feels good to be a gangster, its great stuff scarface is a quality rapper!

I agree with some of the post, tupac was a very talented actor and poet, i always loved him back in the day but like people said, everyone suddenly likes them when there dead, just listen out for 13 year old kids playing run dmc now jmj is dead, but i suppose we all start somewhere and none of us knew all about hip hop when we started, i just hope they learn to appreciate it for being more than just another music. its modern poetry for normal people, a way to express yourself! thats why i think the new stuff mostly sucks, as its not lyric based, no meaning to any of it, just thumpin bass and all that, but each to there own i suppose:)

3 tunes I do like are California Love, Troublesome '96 and Hit 'em up :D

Biggie was brilliant though and 'Ready to Die' is a great album :)

Ohh while we're on the subject...

can you explain why rappers refer to their followers as niggaz? (or the many alternate spellings). Judging by social hisotry, this is a word that causes a great deal of offence, so how come it has turned around to be something of pride?

Its about taking the word back. For so long it was seen as derogitory term used by white people for blacks. Then the blacks took the word back - in the sense ' yes I am a n*gga and proud of it' BUT you can only use it if you black. Other wise its offensive.
People like J Lo have already made this mistake...

I hate the way people portray people as wanna be's cos they listen to music, I'm me and no one else, I don't give a shite if I'm reincarnated as a black, white or blue person cos people are people and that's all that matters, their are bad white people as well as bad black people!!

On another matter Pharcyde are wicked!!!! Droooooooopppppppppppppppppppp!! :D I love the video with the beastie boys in the back ground

I've liked hip hop/ rap/ r'n'b since i was about 10..... i have jodeci albums - bet none of ya's heard of them........ k ci and jo jo are from jodeci.....

i agree with the westwood comment, the music is great but he sounds so stupid. how can you respect someone who sounds like that.....

i had dr dre concrete roots album but i swapped it with my brother for 2 cd's, that fact that he "borrowed" it for a year before we swapped......

the tupac stuff that is too pop is the stuff that's been put together since his death. his mother is in charge of all his material and she's the one who has spliced his recording with songs, for example changes.......
i've got a tupac dvd, thug immortal, which is a doccumentary on his life.....

don't get me wrong, i like some b.i.g stuff, but you could argue that some of that is too pop as well.......

EDIT: OMG!.... I'm agreeing with haydn;)

Yep i have, did have one of theirs but lost it ages ago. My fav R&B artist is Jahiem as his sound is much better than that of R Kelly and other more 'mainstream' artists.

Its reported that 2pac has thousands of unreleased songs so his mother has lots of time to make some money of her sons name  R U Still Down is where it all went wrong IMHO.

Don't really listen to much new HipHop now, still got favourites e.g. Pharcyde, De-La, Blackalicious, and for the moody cruise tunes, it's gotta be Master Ace, Sittin On Chrome.. I like some of the new stuff, like 'some' DMX tunes, 50 cent etc, but to be honest I feel I might be gettin a little old or something, as I read alot more racism into some artists stuff now.

hadyn
05-06-2003, 14:27
i dunno i think hip hop was much more racist and reserved from non black people back in the early 90s when i was listening 2 it as a kid, perhaps it the fact that when ur a kid uve always got more of an open mind, or are less worldly wise to what your actually listening to.....

hadyn
05-06-2003, 14:28
masta ace sitting on chrome, and jay z feat ugk big pimping(with the westwood intro) now thats the beats 2 cruise 2 like a dutty rock pimp!!

"speakin of a master plan" or was it "thinkin of a master plan" haven't listenned to paid in full for ages, yeah I know Eric B & Rakim were really good but I think their are better rappers out their i.e DJ Premier and Guru

hadyn
05-06-2003, 14:58
technically and in his intellectual delivery eminem is the best mc ever, but no-one got things going like rakim did back in the day, and the weird thing is, he shouldnt get u hyped up, his style is so firmly laid back as if he was talking to you slowly regardless of the tune behind him, but i suppose thats skills 4 ya, and thats wot a lot of dickheadz like Ja Rule havent got - MURRRDAAAAHH! = urgh!

Just been reading thro most of this thread, and i agree with alot of what you guys are saying, especialy about young kids into eminem, and "oh we love rap" oh so u like nwa then..... "who?? "

Outta tupac and biggy.... well both where great, but i gotta say i like tupac more, hes alot more consistant. I think the one thing that started the east cost west cost stuff was puff daddy, stired it up for both sides and only he was the winner, (not that he prob cares).

I 1st got into rap and hip-hop in the mid 90's along with my bro, matt, as we got into playing bball. Started into old school, with jungle bro's, daisy age with de la soul, Q-tip, a tribe called quest, Grand master flash and the beasties to name but a few.
Then started liking more rap with NWA, ice cube, tupac, busta and DMX. Along with mos def, J5, the freestylers, rahzel etc...

Love DMX think he one of the best rappers around, i got every album and almost every single hes ever done :D

Eminem, well hes good, but i think his stuff gets played to death too much now, i like his original tracks more, especialy off his album infinate.

D12 and 50 cent..... dont really do it for me, only thing im waiting for his the new DMX album  and the last ever de la soul one

Chris_Gee

Paul C
05-06-2003, 15:55
Yup agree with all that Chris, I've been playin bball since I was about 12 so hip hop and bball go hand in hand, nothin better than playin outdoors in the sun with some sweet beats gettin you hyped up. I'm not the biggest fan of DMX, don't get me wrong I like him but sometimes all that barkin like a dog p1sses me off

I will miss De La truely cos Plug 1 and J Dove can rhyme, especially on tha Stakes is high CD :)

Its cool to see alot of people on this board do have good taste ;)

Before when i saw the threads for what people had in the car to listen to i thought i was the only proper Hip Hop fan on here, but glad to see i am not! lots of good tunes getting talked about, but has anyone mentioned proberly the greatest piece hip hop ever recorded which was at least 5 years before its time and is still one of the freshest songs 10 years after its release (well except for its title which dates it) SOULS OF MISCHIEF 93' TIL INFINITY!!. rhyming which at that time was the most flowing smooth and technical style which had never been heard before, well in my humble opinion anyway :D

hadyn

like chris said, ive been a big hip-hop fan from back when i was about 10, then got into Ballin' in the early 90's when i was 12 or 13. old skool hip-hop such as de la soul, the chronic, NWA, warren G, coolio, mos def, common, LL' Onyx, old Nas and ice cube are like the sound track to my life as i know it, all that old Tommy Boy records stuff like stetsasonic
right now im into DMX, Wu-tang (altho i think they fell off a little lately) Jurassic 5, Slum Village, etc.

Hip Hop was invented by Cool Herc, Afrika Bambaata etc in New York in the late '70's. It took its influences from many musical styles because the DJ's were always in competition to find the most obscure records to play, including a version of a Shadows track made by an obscure Latin American group.

Perhaps you are thinking of Walk This Way by Run DMC and Aerosmith, which was an Aerosmith track originally.

no my point is that rock and roll was once a black music form from the south of america(aka the "dirty south"!), that was ripped off and sold to the masses as a white medium thru people such as elvis, the same thing happened to jazz, changing from urban street music to eventually evolve into the bland soulless middle aged, middle class fat white mans music it is 2day, the same thing is happening to hip hop as it loses touch with its roots in the streets and is rapidly becoming the accepeted sound of now materialistically, corparately and artistically - parallels between elvis and eminem perhaps???

Wak
08-06-2003, 21:40
Yes I see, you meant to say rap is evolving like rock and roll, and you're right.

Rap has certainly become a lot more comercial lately to the point where people can't release a record without a rapper on there. Step forward J-Lo, Christina Agorrilla, Maria Carey, Janet Jackson, Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, the list goes on. You could be forgiven for thinking Ja-Rule had never released a record on his own. Er, come to think of it, has he??? And WTF Busta Rhymes? bloody hell man what are you doing?

aka-coley
09-06-2003, 00:07
thats my opinion too wak, i know i sound old when i talk of the good ole days, but i liked hip hop as the music that was definately underground, that i had to search to find the new record, and not look in the top ten albums in virgin or hmv!!
when the subject matter was more than just talking abut there cars ( which they hire and dont own, as if they are driving bentleys after releasing there first album!!) and talking of the same old bollocks. there are still great stuff coming ou but its few and far between, hence why i like alot of the UK stuff as it is still a select music with only a small following so it still has realness.

listen to common sense, I used to love H.E.R its a love song to his life time love who has sold her body to the masses, and his love is hip hop

i just remember back in the day, wearing all my hip hop stuff, caterpillars tucked into your baggy jeans, fitted cap and puffa jacket, that people literally used 2 cross the road when u came down the street - its all changed now as every white kid off the estate basically looks like that rocking moschino jeans etc etc. On the flip-side tho, it is nice 2 actually be able to hear hip-hop when u go out in clubs/bars etc, cuz as all hip-hop heads know, back in the day there was no recognition, no radio play, and u wudnt hear it in any club apart from a specialist night! Its nice when u just forget about the politics and feel the music 2 see top-shopped up hoes and strippaz getting down 2 the hip hop and shaking their azzes in a communal vibe nowadays, cuz i remember in like 93/94 i could have never imagined anyone let alone a top-shopped up female getting on down 2 anything remotely hip hop!! :p

dont get me wrong haydn, in a club i love to hear the hip hop, coudlnt care less if its from those artists i been slagging off, as thats where that stuff belongs, as its just a funky music to get down to. i would much rather hear all that and a bit of garage than sh*te dance music, infact last nite i was out getting my groove on and in my drunken state love all that stuff in the clubs!! and when they dropped street tuff - rebel mc it made me smile and obviously followed by let me clear my throat and the other regulars, great stuff!

same here, my hip hop threads from back in the day have long since been resigned to a corner of the wardrobe!but u cant really dress the culture these days as its in every part of youth culture 2day, so its not making the stark statement it used to in the early 90s.....old man, signing off!

just been listening to a few peepz down the pub chatting bare bubbles - but can anyone, comment on the 'widespread' notion that Tupac Shakur is coming back from the dead/Cuba in september this year?Has it got something to do with the seven year theory or summat, and that 2pac has hinted that he will return from a fake death in one of his records or summat???i know obviously about the makavelli connection, and makavelli's theories on coming back from the dead to confuse your enemies and destroy them, but has anyone else heard that 2pac is coming back sept. 2003??

This has been the theory since he was 'killed' that he would return seven years later, we will just have to wait and see
