View Full Version : Windows 7......worth it or not???
I've got an offer to get windows 7 for £30 but not sure if I should go for it or not?
I'm running windows Vista at the moment so i'm hoping that windows 7 will be a nice upgrade.
Also, I've got my laptop and a desktop so do I need to buy 2 licenses or can I use the one as they are both my machines?
If your paying for it and have vista then No!
you'll need to licences for both to be legal and windows 7 is far superior to Vista
7 is no much nicer I think. I've been using it for a few months now. No niggly things on my mind yet, unlike Vista. I would for £30
Only trouble is my graphics card and some of my sound devices don't have drivers yet, or some are not being made 7 compatible. Worth checking first incase it costs you a lot more in one go.
Thanks guys, might take the plunge then. I've done the compatibility test and theres a couple of things that have flagged up but they aren't important.
Supa, how long did the install take?

What graphics card do you have that isnt covered???
Windows 7 will be much better on a laptop, so if you have one with vista then put 7 on it and it will run better.
Erm...can't remember exactly, but no longer than your usual windows installation. Maybe half hour ish or so.
I have it installed on a virtual PC at work for testing any updates etc. Both my machines have had no issues :)
EDIT: Creative Labs Video Blaster I think. Geforce 4 MX420 or something. Not 100% sure, but sounds something like that. My machine was mainly setup for music. It works, just no fancy aero stuff.
I'm putting it on my laptop so i think I will go for it :D

on my laptop this is what often crashes -
Windows internet explorer
window explorer
volume control
Autocad 2007
quicklaunch controls
The laptop runs slow whenever it decides to aswell.
Thats all I can think of at the moment.

I paid for it at 11pm and its installing now. It's at 11% already.

Oh sorry, i thought you meant you got the upgrade via your laptop. If you brought a laptop with vista on, you can upgrade to windows 7 for like free as its says. Buts its 35quid PNP.

Windows 7 doesnt take long to install
BUT
Remember when you install it you must go to the manufacturers sites for your chipset, video card, network card ect and download the latest drivers..
DO not rely on microsofts drivers as you wont have the full performance.
My fav being XP for many reasons, I had no problems with Vista at all but ran it way after its release. I have ran 7 since its beta trials. And from my experience over these years i'd prefer not to run the latest OS (close to release) i'd rather an older OS with the latest updates. It has proven to me to be more stable, less BSOD. Which i've had 2 of with 7.

There's always a cheeky catch aint there lol.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll do that as soon as its installed.
I've never really had a problem on my personal Vista Machines, but I've looked at lots of others. Mainly my girlfriends mum. She stores a list of errors for me to fix everytime we go round for dinner. Luckily it's only once a month :D
