View Full Version : computer help
hi,
wonder if someone can help with either problem please :(
I have my computer in my room, and it woke me up at about 7.30 this morning making a loud ticking noise. I hoped it was one of cd drives, but it was my new hard drive instead.
So i unplugged the hard drive and booted up windows, however now windows freezes on the black xp screen right before i see the desktop. I can get windows to boot in safe mode, i went into device manager but it's not throwing up any driver error other than the one which were already there
i'm guessing the harddrive is fcuked, it's got all my music on it, so i've lost all that
Has anybody got any ideas before i re-install windows, y does this happen to me

is that drive just for info purposes ?
Or do u have windows running on two hard drives ? :?
is it just makin a noise or did it stop workin.
hi,
got 2 hdd, one for windows(still works although don't boot windows @ the moment) and the one that stopped working is just data.
The non windows hdd was making a loud clicking noise, so i shut my computer down, with both hdd's conncted it freezes where the bios detects the IDE drives:cry: if i disconnect my new one, it almost fully loads up, does load in safe mode tho(fairly sure the windows hdd works)

I take it the wee jumper settings at the back are correct and u havent changed them for any reason. The things that set slave and master?
emmm. clickin noises? u could ... (not sure if its recommended) get it booted up into windows with the case open, then when in windows, reconnect ur HD and copy the files over , then take ur HD back to shop, or buy a new one, that way at least u have ur data backed up ?
That was just a daft idea really, but I was thinkin if it was that , that was stoppin it bootin up right it would be a quick fix to save ur data
not changed the jumpers at all, i don't think i can plug it in. the bios doesn't recognise it so i doubt i will be able to use it with windows?
Basically when i start the computer up the hdd is fine for the first few seconds(because the computer doesn't need n e info from it i guess), then i get a really high pitched whine, then it starts clicking. Fairly sure it fcuked
Andy
Make sure the IDE cable isnt loose, if not its buggered!
bollocks, n e ideas about the windows thing, can i get away without a fresh install?
Andy
Was the swap file ont he other drive, thats probably why it wont boot properly?
If it is then safe mode it then change the location, if you have no Idea what Im blathering on about, then ignore this sentance!

u can do a repair on XP. just stick the XP disc in and it should fix what the prob is. In theory. Im not sure how much I trust them, but If I was stuck and didnt want to do a reinstall I might try it.
i'll give it a try, i'll post and let u guy's know what happens

Sounds like your hdd is well and truly caput. it aint a fujitsu is it?
like vez says it may be the swap file. if its on the second drive windows may get a bit pissed when it can find it.
Could try plugging in the hdd as a slave and thumping it hard a few times (works for me sometimes ahem...) but i doubt it will work, sounds a gonner.....
hdd is maxtor i think(160gb), only had it 2 months @ the most. Will try to 'gently' tap it, should still be in waranty tho, although i'm sure i will loose all my info :( :(
Started doing that repair thing, it's just knida hanging @ the moment tho doing an inspection (been like it for 5/6 minutes). I have xp on the machine i'm using down here. Could i find that file and copy it?

you wont be able to copy the swapfile from another machine (if thats what you meant) as it will be hundreds of mb in size and prob wouldnt work anyway. best idea is to start in safe mode go into system properties, Advanced, performance settings, advanced and then into change virtual memory, set it to no paging file (just for the moment) and restart it. if it still dont work then..... err... reinstall?????
i had a whole load of nice fujitsus go down last year, spent weeks swapping them out:mad:
it's just completely ****ed now :( if i re-install it will i lose all my files, cause i've got stuff on my desktop and i don't wanna format my hdd

If you re-install it all the data SHOULD still be there if you re-install over the top of it!!!
it reckons now i've gotta format it   , i'm gonna have to hook it upto the one i'm on now and try to get it to copy all my files accross.
i have no luck with computers :(
Andy
what i'd do is rip open the computer ur using @ the mo, shove in 1 @ a time the disks from ur comp and copy the stuff u want from them to the hdd or burn them off if its got a writer then plonk them back in to ur comp and reinstall windows.
clicking cud be down to a dodgy power cable going into the 160gb or a dodgy ide(doubtful 2nd one) try different cables for it to see if it gets rid of noise.
r u +ive that its the HDD clickign and not a wire hanging over a fan sumwhere?
yeah, as soon as i unplugged it the clicking stopped, the clicking also didn't pick up speed as it would if i was hitting a fan. I'm just gonna have to play around with hdd's today or 2morrow
Andy
have seen a post where someone got 4.5 hours extra use out of theirs by putting it in the freezer
neva heard of this freezer trick??!!?
how did u get on then?
had to format it   , my 160gb hdd is ****ed so i'm gonna have to send it back, only bought it on the 23rd of April  . Not got my gfx driver so my computer is well slow @ the moment:( still at least i've got broadband to get it faster  :notworthy
