Making a USB flash drive read-only

Anyone ever done it? Is it possible with software? I know you can get the ones with the switch on them but they're neither widely available or cheap.

why cant you use a CD/DVD or a mini CD/DVD, would be cheaper etc

not all devices have optical drives.

why does the drive need ot be read only?
