Right

now I am getting mildy furious.

My PC thinks it is in the UK, talking British English, running on GMT, waving a Union Jack and connected to a UK phone number

So WTF is going on with the keyboard which is insisting it is Yank wonk? (I'm assuming Yank from what you guys have said) IE " is @, # is | , \ is also \ you see what I mean...

All my soddy symbols are buggered and short of burning the mother to the ground I'm lost...

Mate, your keyb is still set to English US somewhere. Is it like that in all parts of windows or just something like Word for instance?

Just un pop the the keys and move them to the correct location on the keyboard.

Seriously though, there should be a keyboard setting somewhere, the @ being above the 2 is definately changeable. Is it the standard keyboard or the logitec cordless?

if your on xp, go to control panel, regional and language settings, then languages @ top of the box that opens, then click on details and make sure your keyboard is set to english (uk) not english(us), this should sort it for you.

Mine did this as well

if you do what you just did, where you can change it from english(us) to english(uk). There is a box below it which shows on mine, an english uk, and an english us sort of drop down waterfall system (if you see what i mean  )
Could you not try 'remove' on the us one, i just did this and if i fcuks anything up it is easy to put back, might be worth a shot :)
