View Full Version : Gaming Discussion Groups

We have noticed an increase in gaming chat recently and thought to stop non200 turning into Game Central we would get some discussion groups started, one for each platform :)

So we have

Playstation 3 (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/group.php?groupid=12)
Xbox 360 (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/group.php?groupid=13)
PC (http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/group.php?groupid=14)

To find them through the forum you just click on the community tag at the top of the page and select social groups

http://www.sxoc.com/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=65451&stc=1&d=1257780287

If anyone wants to start a group for any other platforms like PSP, DS, Wii etc etc then feel free and stick a link here for this post to be updated

You can now discuss the various games, issues, FAQ's about your platform in one easy to use place which we hope you find helpfull. It also stops non200 being cluttered with various gaming things

Unfortunatly you dont seem to be able to attach photos etc but you can link from other sites like photobucket and just put it in the tags

The original gaming thread is here for reference

Interesting idea

I don't think anyone will ever notice that unless they happen to read this thread. If I was you I'd link them from the top of the non-200 forum if you can :)

EDIT: Having thought about this a bit more I'm not sure it's the way to go. If I want to get together and talk about games with people it's not necessarily all about the platform. Take MW2 for instance, this is surely going to be this month's hot-topic in the gaming world and is across three platforms, why have three "official" threads to talk about things that would normally have gone into a single thread in non-200.

Perhaps you should have a general "gaming" social group rather than segregate it by manufacturer?

I don't like it.
I get that 3 seperate forza threads was probably too much, and yeah this is prdominantly a car forum, but surely that's what non 200 is for.

I posted this elsewhere, but it's better to 'moan' here.. ;)

The idea is that all the 360/PC/PS3/Wii/Next next gen console stuff will have their own little areas so that all the relevant information for gaming is kept together. If they created a sub category for SXOC gaming then the main forum page would be far too big :)

Yes, that's great but why? Why is it discussing a game different to any other topic in non-200, why's it so special it has to be shunted away from where people browse? I don't think it needs it's own category, it's only since FM3 came out that there have been three threads on the main page. Is it really that much of a problem (if I'm being negative), if it's because you want to create a community, then great, but you won't create much of a community when it's hidden and people can't find it.

Personally, I browse for things, if it doesn't interest me I don't read it, I don't read the technical sections or really any of the 200 related sections any more, they don't interest me really. So I look in non200 motoring and non200 related chat, now something I am interesting in is hidden away in a menu and we're 'supposed' to use that.

can we not just have a Gaming section under non-200 then inside that, a section for general gaming, ps3 , xbox360 and finaly pc.

it would be much easyer to find.

I often browse the forums by clicking on the 'NEW POSTS's button but the topics in that comminuty wont show up now and I dunno if I can be bothered to check the community ever few minutes to see replies to topics.

Check a gaming section in Non-200 chat as a sub forum and it will work fine surely?

that sounds better especially if it lets you post pictures and video

I like the fact there's a random mix of subjects in non-200, if I don't want to read a thread I won't. Is there really any need to segregate the gaming threads in particular? The sub-forum idea of non-200 would be fine but seems a bit overkill sticking it away in a corner.

Well i don't like it earlier.

Had a very quick look last night. Looked awkward to use and about as popular as a case of the warts.

Does this mean turbo gasket & boost leak chat will get it's own 'social group' too? :p

I could just about live with it, if email notifications worked. But they dont, so I have no idea when people reply to a thread I posted on, which i find annoying.

Just my 2p :)

Can we please just have the gaming sections as a sub-forum? That community page is a pain in the arse and you can't quote things!

I understand you wanting to clean up a bit but for the love of god make it a sub-forum :( The thing that makes the SXOC great is the community, people come here for a multitude of things and if I'm honest, pretty much the only reason I come back here now is for non-200 (yet I still pay my membership fee as I want to support the club).

Don't penalise your community for posting in a non-car related section about non-car related things.

We have noticed an increase in gaming chat recently and thought to stop non200 turning into Game Central we would get some discussion groups started, one for each platform :)

I have some other predictions based upon the time of year. Around the end of November there will be threads on 'early decorations'. Around the end of December people will talk about something called Christmas and a film called Avatar. In January I predict threads moaning about VAT going back up. Around March time people will talk about F1, I predict one thread every two weeks until around the end of October, and the possibility of more threads if the FIA are 'Tards. I predict some famous people will die, and there will be threads about that.

I could continue being facetious, but I'll stop. Sorry we had 3 Forza threads, close two of them and let us have the original back. Let us come back from the naughty room of no functionality. :smash:

I tried to get used to the new social club bit, I even linked to it in my sig. It does suck huge donkey cock though, it's awkward to get to and just as awkward to get out of. Unless you know it's there you ain't going to use it as you'll never find it. The chat looks in a nasty horrible to read format with no quote function and using the section makes me feel like a smoker again, forced outside for enjoying something different.

Shall we have a "PC technical problems" community as well seeing as how there are more and more of those threads popping up

It's only going to work if it's either left as it was (the best option IMHO) or a seperate section is created (sadly, although it's a good option, there are many who will complain that the main screen is then too cluttered. Boo frickity hoo :smash: ).

I predict a lot of moaning.... (must be right cos i will do a lot of it).

The social groups are a nice idea but they need some work to integrate them with the main board.

Sure.
There you go, it's fixed. Only took 4 hours of sorting.

Thanks.

Have you heard about Modern Warfare 2?

Why are you still here, geek?

Jesus christ you are touchy fookers :ghey: I bet a few of you have actually stamped your feet :wack:

We started the groups to try and make things better and for things like the gamer tags I think it works. No, it turns out the groups dont have the funtionality of the main forum which is a shitter :( so we are currently discussing how to make things better for everyone (yes a sub forum would be the obvious answer but need to decide if thats the best thing for the forum and club as a whole). No matter what we do a proportion of people will say its shit

I don't think that's fair Mark, a large proportion will say it's shit if it is and a tiny percentage might moan anyhow but if the gaming section was more visible and functional then I think we'd be more than happy to have our own little arena :)

I appreciate what you're trying to do but I think Martin's post above is actually pretty close to the truth. It's all good getting us geeky people to help fix problems but when we want our own chat we get segregated into a side room ;)

We certainly havent tried to segregate anyone, we thought it would have been a welcome additition to the forum as all the gaming stuff would have been in one place (you may notice myself and Graham are members of the PS3 group so its not like the staff are anti gaming). Once the groups were formed it became apparent they didnt have the full funtionallity of the forum which was a shame but we thought we would stick with it to see how it went :) For the gamer tags it works as its not a thread you need regular updates for etc but for general gaming chat its a bit shit :(

I agree a sub forum would be better obviously but as I said we are trying to establish if thats the best thing for the forum as a whole as once you have your playpit I am sure other groups will want theirs  ;)

Anyway whilst you are here I have this issue with my PC........................

You could always call the sub forum "Arcade" then have anything gamer related like xbox and playstaion but also free online games etc.

Or maybe better still, we could have a "Geek" section, where any console and PC discussions/issues etc could go

It's just that a lot of threads in non-200 are related to PC problems. There are many subjects that come up quite often, gaming is just one of them.

I wouldn't mind the social group so much if it were better integrated with the rest of the board.

Dave_S
16-11-2009, 14:39
What I (and I think Martin) were subtly getting at is that we're welcomed in non-200 to help with computer problems but then shunned when we want conversations of our own ;)
