View Full Version : PC Problems
My PC (reasonably new) crashed when I tried to burn a CD (Nero) whilst I was downloading from KazaA at the same time. I say crashed but it was more like a power cut, the box just shut down. I thought it was coincodence (sp?) so tryed to do the two things at once when the computer fired up again. And it did it again
Now everytime I fire up the PC this warning appears, even after correct shut-down and no apparent running problems:

I blanked out some of the data incase it was identity info I shouldn't be broadcasting on the net.
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Dunc. :)

erm, never used Win XP, reasons as stated in the post above!!!
Anyway, can't u go into a 'safe mode' and recover the machine, sorta regress the software back a week or so?
Win ME has it, but thats also a pile of :tosser:, get win2k!

Tried XP's rollback under
Accesories -> system tools -> System restore
That would only work if a restore point had previously been created.
If the same sorta thing happens again, when you reboot, press f8 during boot sequence to bring up the boot menu and select last known good.
This restores the registry settings from the last previous successful boot. Make sure you do this on first reboot thou as otherwise xp will save the knackered reg settings.
But as to your problem in hand - i'd probably just reload xp, but thats probably cause its not my pc and i'm lazy :D :D
If it persists, reinstall Windows.

I think mine automatically creates them (certainly does when i do a windows update) hence my suggestion.

Ah, didn't realise that, must be amongst one of the thousands of settings (Cause the ones at work dont auto create)
So you have my apologies :)

Could be that I have System Restore set to use maximum space allocation on my drives (~12%) so its gone a bit OTT and made ~15 restore points over the last month when I just checked. I havent played with the settings though so maybe this is the default for XP Professional?
Still its saved my butt once or twice! :notworthy

I'm just in process of rolling out 400 new XP pro machines at work upgrading from 9X, and i'm putting restore points on them all, cause i know they'll save my butt more than once or twice :D :D :D

Not too sure what you mean by the first reboot, it has been rebooted loads of times with the same persisting problems? I realise I've misunderstood what you've said but it takes a bit more explaining with me :o
What would have caused the PC to "blackout" is this manner?
Thanks for the help guys, I'll reinstall XP is I can't solve it an easyier way.

Hey dude, dont be so quick to write it off I have yet to kill XP myself and it seems much more bombproof that 98se! :)
I'd have talked you through what was suggested above if need be, only I dont have the time right now since I have two exams in the next two days :(
Maybe someone else would be able to explain the use of the system restore function to see if that helps and I bet that many other board members are more knowledgeable with XP than I am and could suggest other ideas (I have only been using it for 4 months and its been a refreshing pain-free experience)
try this - goto start menu
accessories group
system tools group
system restore
click the option to "restore my computer to an earlier time", you will see a calender, days in bold have valid restore points that you can pick and go back to. If you see one which was before the pc went crazy pick it and hope for the best!
Hope it works! :)
Adam - I had a look at the restore points today as one of our machines really screwed up - and you were So right, Xp's gone overkill and created a restore point every day that the machine was swithed on.
Dunc - sorry you're right i wasn;t very clear. I was referring to if you ever had this sort of problem in th future and not to the one in hand, the obviously the first reboot would be the one after the problem occurred. Sorry for the confusion mate :)
Cheers guys, I'll try this out and tell you how I get on.
Dunc :)
I tried restoring a good few dates including ones WELL before this started happening to no success. I think I'll just try reinstalling XP once I get back from my Hols.
Cheers guys,
Dunc.
