View Full Version : Recommended Runabout
Dont think i'm gonna find a Sierra anytime soon so have decided to look at other things. Has anyone got any (sensible  ) suggestions for a runabout. Must be nippy (sub 10 0-60 would be nice) and have a few creature comforts (E/W, C/L, PAS) all for around £500
will consider most things except mini's (sorry cant stand them) and citreons/skoda/lada/yugo.
Might be looking at a Cav SRI tomorrow ;)

Cav SRi except for the scrabble.
Personally I would go for a Carlton 2.0ltr. 0-60 in 9.3 secs, loads of creature comforts, cheap and RWD :D :D

Carlton again, but a GSi should just about be reachable with 500 squids.

Try these:-
Carlton £500- (http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW/cars_search.asp?modelexact=1&make=VAUXHALL&min_pr=&postcode=hp3+8js&source=0&model=CARLTON&max_pr=500&sort=3&miles=100&max_records=50&search.x=53&search.y=7)
Saab 9000 £500- (http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW/cars_search.asp?modelexact=1&make=SAAB&min_pr=&postcode=hp3+8js&source=0&model=9000&max_pr=500&sort=3&miles=60&max_records=50&search.x=33&search.y=5)
Sierra £500- (http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW/cars_search.asp?modelexact=1&make=FORD&min_pr=&postcode=hp3+8js&source=0&model=SIERRA&max_pr=500&sort=3&miles=60&max_records=50&search.x=4&search.y=7)

Merc 190. Loads about for £500 or so many of which are in good nick. Go for the injected 2litre and you've got reasonable performance and a fairly bullet proof engine that's uncomplicated should things go wrong.
Many are still on there first or second old duffer owner and have been specced up to the hilt.
Plus, it's not a BMW :D

I like the idea of the Saab 9000 due to the luxury but it is scrabble wheel drive.
Merc 190 is a good idea, I almost bought a cosworth one before the 200 but the insurance was a nightmare, not fast enough either.
Dan,
My 1989 Honda Aerodeck was odd looking and nippy.
Thirsty though.
The metallic ones rust, red ones don't.
Only weaknesses I'm aware of are breaking front springs and the has to be mentioned FWD
All elecs inc cruise. Some even have air con.
It has pop up lights though. I know.
The Honda Accord Aerodeck I had was an awesome little car :)
Only car I ever span 540 :D
;)
Someone near me is selling a Sierra Estate for 200 notes ! :D You could get that, and then get StuyMac to fit you an LSD for it :D:D
old 3 series
Opal Manta
Skoda
Chevette
MKII Scort
S13 :D
Alfa
Fiat Croma (if you like Saabs anyway + mmmm, Ferari injection system)

not so!!!
I was driving one of these beasts round last week - leather everywhere, enough space to keep another car in the boot, climate control, leccy seats/sunroof, trip computer, cruise control - proper limo style - and it didnt scrabble or torque steer much at all :)
And I beat a VR6 highline in a race as well  :D :D :D
My mate is selling it for ~1000 notes, I cant recommend it enough :D

Such style, build quality, reliability and an electrical system to die for

Surely a must for 500 notes (if you can find one that expensive).
And of course, when it stops working you can simply seep it up and put it in the wheelybin.

hehe, and of course you then have a 2ltr engine and a turbo that you can throw straight into an Estelle :)
the Croma's actually very very similar to the saab 9000, in fact they share a lot of parts, think it was the Fiat, the Saab and an alfa were developed as joint ventures between the 3 companies
you're right about the electrics though, think Alfa must have made all of that part of them

Lancia had something to do with it as well - the Lancia Thema I think it was called? Wasn't a big seller...
Swift GTi mate :)
Mmmmmmmm 8k redline :D

Why do you want a fast runabout?
Oh you 200 is dead.. I see. Derrrr
My runabout 1990 1.0 VW polo
0.60 20ish seconds but dosnt get to 60 going up a hill :D
E30 BMW 320/325i
Coupe would save some weight, most have CL and EW. You can get them from around £100-300 in decent nick...well expect them to be a little bit trashed but that's how a bmw is meant to be driven ;)
Parts are cheap now and plenty of scrap ones for salvaging
I have made my purchase which is dependant on it passing a MOT coz it only had a couple of months to go and for the money i wanted a year.
So what i have i got i hear you all say
Wait for it.
