802.11b 11mbs is ok for most things other than big file transfer.
802.11a 54mbs is shit.
802.11g 54mbs is compatible with b, better range but not ratified yet so if it's of importance don't buy it until it's ratified, Cisco, last I heard was, releasing their g stuff in Aug, though it has moved from May, to June to July to Aug so far.

Only get worried when little cryptic signs start appearing on the outside of the building:eek:

I have used the Belkin at home.

Its not bad at all i mainly use it for being able to browse the web on my laptop anywhere in the house, i have also set it up for my bro to use it via a USB wireless Belkin network adapter and he lives across the road from me!! and gets a very good connection.

I would recommend the Belkin wireless adapter for general web browsing and using peer 2 peer software.

But it will be slow for transfering large files from one machine to another or backing up. If you want to do this i would suggest you hold on for a while until speeds increase.

I currently use the 11meg stuff... Lucent cards and access port... before that 2mbs Bay network cards... the 11 is ok for idle surfing but not for much more intense stuff... Im going to be upgrading to the 56mbs G in the next month... Linksys are selling the cards at about £55 and acces ports for £100...

the buffallo stuff is cheaper but still pretty good quality...

the warning though, as mentioned in the other wireless post, is that the range, especally at high speed is not that great.... and the further away, with the more crap blocking the signal, the worse the transmission speeds will be....

main uses will be just in the house. its not practical in our house to run cables thru, all tho i cud main reason is Dad doesn't want me drilling holes :D.
we shud be gettgin broadband instaled downstairs that aint good for me seeing as my comps upstairs. so i will be sharing the internet from his. if i want to download big files i'll do it on his :) and then burn it off.
