I threw my toys out of the pram and sent the car through 4 gears with no traction, it's probably cost me £100 worth of rubber but it relieved some stress lol

Rasta: It entered my mind just at the point of no return lol

I had no change only a note so had to go to a booth :(

It's not going to happen next time  straight to the coin bin for me

Right, if by removing the rear seat(s), the car is classified as a van - a two seater - what happens if you are in a Smart 4Two? Does that count as a van then? No back seat.:wack: And if you folded the rear seats down in a hatchback - say you were carrying a large item - does that mean that again, the vehicle becomes a van?

Guy
12-10-2009, 21:39
I think its done on if the car originally had back seats but they have been removed then there going to try and charge you the stupid amount.

But something that doesnt come with backseats at all as stock are apparently fine?! :s

Definatly the way forward:thumbs: either that or I'm just going to handbrake up and sit there:nod:, can't be legal surly car is a car , van or commercial van is a van:confused:It's a hard one to call as there is a legal definition of a "car derived van"

Pretty sure that something like a fiesta or a corsa van which could easily have rear windows and seats fitted was liable to a higher rate of taxation if it was less than 3 years old as they were vat free as a van

The more I think about it the more illegal it seems

I might even go down there when the car is running properly and demand police attendance if they try to charge me commercial vehicle prices :D

Guy
12-10-2009, 21:59
It mentions NOTHING about this charge on there site http://www.severnbridge.co.uk/toll_prices.shtml

Or on the big signs on the road before you hit the bridge.

First thing you know about it, is either when you read the tiny sign on the toll booth, or when they demand money out of you, by which point your fcuked as there is no way out.

Are you saying theres a sign on the booth saying cars with no back seats?

Been having a look and Severn bridge and highway agency refer to Cars as Catagory 1 and vans etc as Catagory 2. Definitions for these are out lined (although elements eg price have been revised) in the Severn Bridge tolls order 2003 (https://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2003/uksi_20033276_en.pdf). Which then refers you to definitions set out in the Severn bridge tolls act 1992 section 8(1)

Which defines car as

“motor car” has the meaning given by section 185 of the [1988 c. 52.] Road Traffic Act 1988,"

Our problem comes from this bit defining vans

“goods vehicle” means a motor vehicle constructed or adapted for use for the carriage or haulage of goods or burden of any description

But in our favour it quotes as

"and where a vehicle would otherwise fall within more than one category it shall be taken for the purposes of this Act to fall only within that with the lower or lowest number."

:annoyed:I still searching though:annoyed:

I was under the impression that to be classified as a van there should not be any glass behind the front doors. If you convert, say a Mini van (bit out of date, I know), by putting rear side glass in you become liable for purchase tax so the vehicle is classed as an estate car. Mind you, I'm not up to date with current legislation, the above is what happened a few years ago.

Nice one madda:thumbs:

Not right not clever and dam well not fair, but I think the line from my earlier post covers them to enforce it

“goods vehicle” means a motor vehicle constructed or adapted for use for the carriage or haulage of goods or burden of any description

Coin bins it is then:D

Neither is a Surfy types T4 VW van but there a van:( but how far we'd get arguing that we didn't adapt it to carry a load I don't know, or were they stand that they only notify us as were at the booth.

Agreed but there not defining a commercial vehicle as registration, insurance, or tax bracket, The act they passed, defines vehicles as van by " constructed or adapted:( for the purpose"

I think its quite quite C*ntish of them TBH :(

How stupid - another reason for me not to return to the UK. Could you just throw boxes in the back or something? I can't believe some jobsworth would actually bother looking into the back of a coupe to see if your seats were installed.

Guy
15-10-2009, 23:06
What really grinds my gears is it doesnt say this before hand, your only 'made' aware of it, at the actual booth, by which point you've had it.
From now on its always going to be coin bins, but as I mentioned when coming over for the Camping I only had a tenner on me :(
