Just changed head gasket on my mums rover and its still chucking out loads of white smoke. Its an N reg rover. There was soo much water on the pistons when we took the head off.
When we went for a drive the temp was OK, but loads a smoke. Could this just be existing water in the head or could there be a leak somewhere else. I think timming is out!
I know theres a common problem with these rovers, but I thought it was head gasket. There was nothing wrong with the existing head gasket. I also put loads of that blue sealant stuff as there was none on the existing one.
Compression test was good, all above 12bar

Tonnie,
Did you ever solve this problem?
Yesterday, I changed the head gasket on a 2.2litre Toyota turbo diesel. Prior to changing the gasket, the cooling system was being pressurised by combustion gases. Also clouds of white/grey smoke were being produced from the exhaust but only with the engine warm and above about 2000rpm.
Now that I have changed the gasket, the cooling system is no longer being pressurised but the smoke is as bad as ever....
Similarly to yours, compression test is good.
Thanks for any help.
Robert
might be a cracked head

I thought Tonnie's might be a cracked head as he hasn't said if the coolant system is still pressurised but I'd be surprised if mine was as the coolant isn't being pressurised any more and I could see signs of where gasses had been passing on the gasket.
Thanks for the reply though :)

Engine has been replace. CAr was leaking coolant and oil in the engine. bought a 40kmile engine for £330 and £100 to fit

Robert, check your cambelt timing, sounds like diesel pump timing might be out, or the damn things got an air leak in the fuel system

I replaced the timing belt during the head re-fit. I checked the timing before I removed the old one and after I put the new one on. Both definitely correct. :(
Now noticed oil or blackened diesel is dripping from the exhaust through the hole where the turbo by-pass gate is actuated. My theory now is that either the injectors are dribbling rather than spraying  or turbo oil seals are allowing oil direct into the hot exhaust. Trouble is, it happens most when hot and revved. I read somewhere that oil seals on turbo aren't doing anything except at idle anyway????
Hope I'm right and it's not worn cylinder bores
Thanks for all replies.
Robert
