my girlfriends internet at her halls of residence last year, was so fast i could download full bluray quality movies in about 2/3 minutes lol and the ping i got was about 6 most of the time. in fact it was so low, i was often accused of masking my ping whilst playing counterstrike :wack:

Uni speeds are often very good  our old uni halls were limited by the switches offering 10mb only, so we all maxed out constantly at just over 1mb/sec. This was 2003 though = very quick

I was sat eating lunch yesterday and got 2.6mb/sec download speed through the uni's network on my wireless laptop in a room full of people

for people who don't have great speeds, there's a setting in windows xp that hogs 20% of your bandwidth for windows use (updates and what not) if you change this setting it increases your speed a bit or least it did on mine :D it was around 10 meg a second, then I changed it and it jumped to almost 12.

Virgin Media 50 meg, pretty good as well as a 6 meg Be connection.

Got it setup (live with couple of other computer geek types) so pretty much all traffic bar gaming traffic goes down the virgin, and the Be is there just purely for gaming and VPN's (Virgin dont do static ip's).

???? What are you talking about? A setting in windows that hogs bandwidth is a load of balls.
There is Bits, which is the background transfer service but you shouldnt turn that off as you wont be getting windows updates which is a mega mega stupid idea

Well I changed this setting nearly 2 years ago, I still get all the windows updates when everyone else gets them without any problem, my PC still functions as well as it did before I made the changes, except with an apparent interweb speed increase :D

Well for the people who do want it here's the article:

Prevent Windows from Stealing Your PC's Bandwidth
A little known feature of Windows Vista & XP is that the system reserves 20% of your internet connections bandwidth for it's own background use.
A good way to squeeze a little extra speed from your connection is to reduce this amount. In fact you can safely reduce it to zero, which causes the system to use only the bandwidth it needs. You won't achieve a full 20% gain in speed, because the system will still be using a certain amount, but speed tests should indicate a noticable increase.
To change this setting follow these steps:
1. Choose Start > Run (or press the windows key and R), type gpedit.msc and press Enter to launch the Group Policy Editor.
2. In the Computer Configuration section, expand Administrative Templates, then Network and click on QoS Packet Scheduler.
3. In the right pain, double click Limit reservable bandwidth.
4. Although the setting is shown as 'Not configured', clicking the Explain tab reveals that the system does nevertheless reserve 20% of your connection's bandwidth by default. On the Setting tab, select Enabled and set the Bandwidth limit to 0 then click OK.

I think, but am not sure, this only works on XP Pro and not Home, but I could be wrong.

Again I'm not going to promise it will work or do anything, but it did on mine :) This came from "Professional Windows Solutions" magazine that I got as part of my Microsoft qualifications (www.windows-solutions.co.uk) so it's not really something dodgy I found scribbled on a napkin on the train to work.

Hope it's helpful to some people. :)

Oh & I accept no responsibility for it doing something untoward on your machine, but this have worked fine on about 20 or so machines I've made the change to (be it my work one, my friends or families)

Clouder_sx
20-09-2009, 12:23
Well, without trying the above, i do struggle to see 20% being true. For a long time i've ran Xp Pro on a fixed 1mb exact connection. I downloaded consistently at 119.0kb/sec - which, i believe, is near enough exactly maxing out the connection, and is not 80% of it :wack:

There should be a ban on investment on broadband technologies beyond 2Mb until 99.5% of the population can at least receive that. It's a fcuking disgrace in this day and age that some people can get an internet connection of 50Mb when others still can't receive ADSL at all. All the investment seems to continually go into the same areas boosting speeds for the same customers over and over again with fcuk all done to deliver a service to the rest. We pay the same for a fraction of the service.

I had a pretty steady 1.7Mb/s until a couple of weeks ago when Sky made "improvements" on my line :(

Funny you should say that John. My Sky BB has been soo bad over the past month its stupid. Most nights i have been lucky to get a connection.

I seem to have posted some random shite on SXOC around the midnight mark several times this week, but it seems I also sent a ranting 1am email to Sky broadband too.

It worked.

Thank you for contacting Sky Help Centre and providing us with detailed information regarding your line.
I have configured your connection to the best possible speed that your line can achieve.
Your line has now been configured at 4544kbps.
Due to your distance from the exchange and the quality of line entering your property, you will not be able to receive a greater speed than this.

For the last ten days or so I was connecting at 0378kbps :wack:

with some details as to what you sent and who to.

This took a while to work out/remember.

Note - All the stuff to follow could have been done in a phone call, if only we could know what number/who to ring. I've had Sky TV for 5years, and Sky Broadband for two years, and always feared making THAT call if anything went wrong. 90 minutes on an 0870 number seems to be quite a usual experience with Sky problems.

I logged into MySky. You'll need whatever username and password was used if the Sky Customer has ever used MySky website before.

then go here:
https://mysky.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyhelpcentre/contactus/kana

The first page is contact details type stuff but the next page gives the option to report a slow connection.

That generated an email to me asking some standard diagnostic broadband questions.

I replied, but putting in some spiel before answering the standard questions,

I'm replying to the autoreply email after reporting a slow connection problem.
A little history might help before I do the standard questions.

I did have a steadyish 1.7mbps connection (2.0mbps according to the router) since buying Sky broadband service in October 2007. Not 8mbps as advertised but the best I can expect from my line, being 3miles from the exchange, 1.7mbps would still be OK for me.

In August 2009 I had an email from Sky saying you were making improvements on my line.
In early September my speed dropped to typically 0.5mpbs and unacceptably unreliable over the last few days. Zero useable connection for several hours yesterday and today.

I did have four extensions from the master socket and had cordless phones attached. Everything has now been disconnected, so only the Sky router and one wired telephone is on the master socket, through a Sky supplied microfilter.

Now a solid and consistent but unacceptable 0378kpbs connection speed (according to the router) but still patchy connection through a browser or email on the PC.
I'd like to try my old spare router, but Sky don't allow me the access username and password for Sky ADSL to let me try that.

I'm aware of other Sky Broadband customers who's service has also (pardon the language) crapped out over the last month, presumably during/after the same line improvements.

I average about 10Gb traffic per month, so am not a very heavy user, so I don't think I've been cut off.

To the diagnostic questions. My replies shown in among the auto-email below as sent to me.

Whatever the result of the diagnostic questions, please undo whatever changes were made to my line recently.

Regards,
Jon

I'm mostly impressed with the spelling, as I was so pissed I never knew I'd sent the thing

The 'other Sky customers' was Marsden :D

My replies to their automatic diagnostic questions followed in the same email

In order for us to establish the cause of your connection issues with your Broadband Box, can you please follow the steps outlined below and supply us with the necessary information in the spaces provided then kindly return our email so that we can assist you further:

How many telephone sockets do you have in your property and out of these how many are in use?
>
>Your Answer?
One

Is your Broadband Box connected to the master BT telephone socket?
This is usually the first socket at the point in which your telephone line enters your property. If you are still in doubt please call BT to check which is the master socket .
Your Answer?
Yes

In order to connect your Broadband Box to your telephone socket are you using only the cables we supplied or have you added different cables or telephone extensions? The preferred set up is shown below.

The microfilter should be the first piece of equipment plugged into the master socket.
The grey cable we supplied should then be connected into the ADSL/Modem side of the microfilter with the other end into the back of the Broadband Box.
All other telephony equipment should be plugged into the phone side of the microfilter, an adapter can be used here if necessary.
>

Your Answer?
Yes.
As a broadband problem solving routine, there is a non-cordless phone plugged into the microfilter.
All other extensions including the TV Sky box (which was on a long extension) have been disconnected.

Can you make us aware if you have a pre-filtered faceplate as shown below?

Your Answer?
My master socket has modern wiring colours (blue/orange/green etc to numbers 2,3 & 5) but is an old box. It is not pre-filtered.

If you do not have a pre-filtered faceplate have you placed a microfilter on all of your telephone sockets which are in use?

Your Answer?
Previously yes, but for today all extensions are disconnected.

Can you please let us know which lights are displayed on your Broadband Box and what colour they are? (Delete as appropriate)

Router colour: Black / White White - Netgear, I think model 384GT but it doesn't say that on the unit.
>Power Light: Green / Flashing Green Green
>Test Light: Amber / Flashing Amber / Off Shows orange tick briefly on switch on, then stays off.
>Wireless Light: Green / Flashing Green Off, switched off by me. I do not want wireless to work.
>Internet Light: Green / Flashing Green / Amber Green
>LAN status: On / Off Green

>
>
>
The image below shows a typical Master socket. If you have one of these can you please unscrew the two screws on the socket and remove the lower half of the faceplate to reveal the test socket behind. Please switch and use the test socket to see if your issue is resolved.

What was the result?
My master socket is an older type without a removeable face.

If your issue is a slow or intermittent connection and you are connecting wirelessly, have you tried the yellow Ethernet cable to see if the issue is the same?

What was the result?
All connections within this house are by ethernet.

Kind regards

TBH mate you've just answered your own question there. ADSL speeds drop dramatically the further away from the exchange you get.

I've seem BT have some gizmo to put on your line which can improve speed.... let me see if i can find a link...

On a cable or ADSL line? If it's cable it will more than likely be traffic shaping/speed throttling.

Carta
13-01-2010, 15:04
Cable indeed, i assumed that throttling only came into effect after certain amount has been downloaded? I have just turned my computer on after 3 days it being off

Stu
13-01-2010, 15:10
Not sure what their policy is now but they used to throttle everyone back through the day and only allow the full 20Mb after 11pm or something equally shite. Someone else with a cable line may be able to confirm.

Assuming yours wasnt a fluke bad period or some other issue it will be over subscription in your area. The ISP in general doesn't give a flying **** about your line quality so during peak hours it degrades never mind just slows down.

You say over subscription, in terms of what exactly? It's not like it used to be where you could technically have one house with 20 live accounts at one address, it's now only one account per house

TrIcK^
09-04-2012, 13:37
Over subscription in my understanding is when your ISP, for example Virgin in my case aggressively advertises itself to gain new accounts and cant handle the traffic with its current infrastructure. Yes I may be able to get up to 4meg/s download, wonderful but I cant stream a pissing video due to jitter for 50% of the time.

@ Ben. Was it ever better than that? Have you tried a new router? I had a router die slowly. First the ADSL became slow. Suffered it for about 4 months, tried everything except spending money. Came down to either buy a router or call out BT. Got a new ADSL router, speed back to "normal" and used the old one as an Ethernet router but that function has now died too. My new ADSL2+ router was a bit faster on ADSL before the line was switched to ADSL2+ than the "new" 5 year old one. With a speed as slow as yours, it you can get it ADSL2+ may be a bit more stable. ADSL2+ has huge speed increase on good short lines. It has little improvement on lines with speeds below 3000Kb/s but above 1000Kb/s and big improvements on very long poor lines.

The pointy top cabinets run out about 2 miles up the road from me. My line comes from an exchange 4 miles in the opposite direction which is likely to get fibre sometime never.

This what I was getting last summer

Yes but that's not your home connection so it doesn't count :D Unless when you want to download the latest Battlefield 3 patch you just take your PC into work... Go on, admit it, at home you have to leave your PC on overnight like the rest of us!

Actually, loads of my clan mates are now on all sorts of whizzy connections now. I'm moaning about a patch taking 3 hours and they just go to the toilet or make a brew and theirs is done.

I would really like a faster upload because I would like to be able to stream my gameplay.

Also if your company allow outgoing VPN connections then there very foolish indeed.

I got 40 meg when I first had Sky Fibre installed, but then performance started to degrade when we first got snow. Talking to Sky, they said the DSL profile was wrong and got Openreach to change it back and it was good for about a week and then started dropping again after we had more snow.

After a marathon troubleshooting session with an Openreach on site, it was determined that trees had stretched my telephone cable to a point where 3mm of copper had been exposed from the insulation where the cable joins the house and was causing a short circuit every time it got wet. Cable replaced and now back running at 40Meg :)
