Just spent a week touring around the SW. First to Portland (Dorset) to see my dad, stop off at seaspring farm (http://www.seaspringfarm.biz/) to buy some chili plants :D on the way to Dartmoor. Hired a Devon longhouse for five days in a tiny village (5 houses) called Lettaford, near Chagford and did some walking (Haytor, Chagford, Mortonhamstead) and then up to Braunton to see my mum.

Fab weather and the scenery was brilliant. My first time on the moors down there and I was well impressed.

Didn't see any 200s, but there was a 300ZX parked up outside a garage in Mortonhampstead every day that didn't seem to move.

You're lucky boys to live there.

It is nice down here, I live just outside of plymotuh and wouldn't want to be any further into cornwall as your just miles from loads of things then, i.e tracks, car events, bike stuff.

Si, you bringing your bike? There's a mint place called Haldon Forest just near exeter with some great XC and DH for all levels.

Then you have Cann woods in plymouth and 2 great places near Tavi.

Not far from where we were. Hope the weather holds Si. You're not going in anything with pristine paintwork are you? The beemer now has scratches on both wing mirrors from all the single lanes :o

Mint! I'll PM you later for details - Nat and I are both taking ours, so I'll have my freeride bike and a Sidekick at my disposal :D I have told her I'd teach her to jump :D

BBB - cheers muchly - we've holidayed quite a bit in the west country before, I've already had the fear of cornish roads instilled into me :D We're taking Nat's teg, as it's the only thing we can get both bikes in.

Ok cool, if i hadn't sold all my bikes i'd pop up and give you a grand tour of the place.

Might get one again though, i miss my 222 the most, the Gaint DH Team was fun but to complicated a linkage system that would pretty much fail each time i went riding! lol

Heh heh, my fr bike is based aroung a 2001 Marin Attack Trail and 2001 Boxxers! Get a hardtail, seriously. The Sidekick is possibly the most fun and chuckable bike I've ever ridden, I utterly love it.

If you go to some of the tracks down here, especially the place near Tavi you will destroy a hardtail!

Check this vid of me taking a beating!

That track is the hard run of the 3, it doesnt look that bad, but believe me, my 1st 2 attempts at it i had to walk parts it was that hard and step, i say walk, i mean slide/fall with my bike! lol

It is really nice down this way but as others have mentioned it is a little tucked away from the rest of the country...

I seem to have the best of both worlds tho as I am 30mins from bristol and an hour away from cornwall:D

I love it down here, but is occasionally frustrating as EVERYTHING is miles away, but 3 miles to nearest beach isnt bad :)

Ummm, I think Haldon has been closed down by the Forestry commission as they wanted to develop the land for something else. Will check with my mate when I next see him as he's one of the people who originally set that place up and built most of the jumps, berms etc.

3 miles??? Long way! My closest beach is 200 meters away :D

BBB: great isn't it? I love it here - 15 mins from decent mountainbiking on dartmoor, 200m from the beach (sea kayaking) Can be on the North Devon coast for surfing in a little over an hour :wack:, plenty of space around and great scenery

Hmm, i'll do some digging.

No :( here, Haldon was sh!t! cann is muuuuuch better. especially over the spanish side:)

And yes, amazing area to live here, i lived in Bristol for a year and a half and i missed this place so much. the beaches, the trails (there are soooo many DH spots here now thanks to the cornwall freeriders, 3 minute handmade tracks are popping up all over the place)

Then the climate is pretty sweet aswell, we get a microclimate here thanks to being so close to the sea on both sides. sure it rains a lot but where doesnt it in the UK these days, :(

If you fancy drinks or sommet else give us a shout, im unemployed and severly bored waiting for my training courses to come along!!!

.... walking Haytor...

My grandparents live in Topsham, so as a kid spent many a holiday with them, and walking Haytor with ice cream after was always a great day :)

Dartmoor and Exmoor as nice, Becky Falls was always a favorite

yes and no, depends how hard i crash. Just bring your bike helmet, i just use mine. Also need to have legs and arms covered. :)

To make things easier, we need to set of early fri morning, so if you want i have two spare rooms you can use to crash over on the thu night. :)

Also bring a pack lunch, water, water proofs, think thats it. Oh it might be 5 pounds for passengers, its says 5 for spectators.

Had an ace week - went up to Haldon twice  Both times with, ummm, 'less experienced' riders though, so unfortuantely didn't want to drag them down some of the DH runs :( Did nip down a few though, and there were some lovely trails.

Signposted route was ok, with some nice tight berms, and a decent rocky section at the end - didn't get to check out the freeride 'park' though. Found a heap more trails meandering off some of the paved family trails though, which were pretty good :)

Was very impressed - really good facility you guys have got there  So much so that I plan to head back with a mate who's waaaaay better than me so we can hit the trails properly.(Benn, we need to get our asses down there when you get back from dominating the trails of the scottish borders :D) and when we do, would be good to hook up with some other local riders :)

Sadly it's spelling the end of my humble 10 year old Attack Trail, which is properly falling to bits :( The Sidekick was a bit out of it's depth, but did a sterling job - I love that little bike :smitten:
Time to look into a new build...

When i get back off hols on the 16th oct (i leave tomorrow) im gona get a decent set up, Commencal Mini DH, SX trail, something along those lines. 6" travel but can hit the DH stuff nicely aswell as trail/XC

Si
28-09-2009, 19:07
6" all round is more than enough I reckon - that's what the current steed is, and to be honest, if I'm hitting somewhere that needs more than that, I'm probably pushing my comfort zone :D I've ridden big bikes and I just prefer something smaller and more chuckable. Like the half cut excuse for a DH bike I've currently got :wack:

Had a chat with my mate who was one of the people who built the hardcore DH courses - it has definitely been closed down (this is assuming we're on about the same place ) but most of the main trails are still open - the fire roads and XC stuff. Its just the bigger jumps and really techy DH bits that have closed. Possibly due to too many injuries.

Dave et al have been offered the use of some private land to build their course on now but its strictly invitation only and for people who want BIG jumps and drops. I am invited but I don't have a) the bike to do it or b) the skills to ride it! But they want me to go up with DSLR in hand for some good pics.

Shame really as Haldon is only a 10 min drive for me.

Si
29-09-2009, 13:47
The DH course that was open wasn't hardcore, but it was well designed and flowed well. There were also a number of short blasts of singletrack DH. I say a number, I mean they were pretty much everywhere! As usual, it's just a case of a keen eye and knowing what to look for :D

There were a number marked as being under construction too.

It's a great facility there though. :)

Si, you should get yer arse down this way a little bit further, 45 mins drive from exeter is Gawton, Tavi and cann, plus a load of stuff down in Cornwall thats well worth a ride! Im sure between us we could sort out lodgings and ride guides lol:thumbs:
