Driving behind a Ferrari 355 today at cruising speed, and all I can say is the sound it made was amazing. I cannot ever remember hearing any car sound so sexy. For those (including myself until today) who haven't heard one, I can only describe it as a cross between a wolf and a the sound track to Event Horizon ;) (scary noise anyway)
I always thought if money was no object I'd get a Skyline and run 1000bhp in it, but after hearing that I'm not so sure ....

a fair few around here where i live (just outside southend)

couple of 355s
a red 360 i see quite regularlyparked around
neighbour has a 550 (and he gets it serviced at the local grease garage  )
and a silver 348ts over the other side of town

the bad thing, of the ones i've see, 1 is owned by a woman, 2 are regularly parked suspiciously close to M&S and the 360 was almsot written off when the wife backed it out the driveway into the gate

i demand they give me their cars

hmm depends if it has a tubi exhaust ;)

normal ferrari engines sound a bit... rattly... like there's a bit of loose metal. nowt like a proper v8 by chevy... hear a marcos mantis GT racer RUM*fvking*BLE by and you'll know what i mean.

For me the sound is 50% of the car...

Well if i paid 100k for a car id want it to be a dream drive, and not something that was a chore. You need thighs like Bobby Carlos to press the clutch.

true of most high end sports cars of that era (348)

the rossa i drove had a rather heavy clutch too, but i forgave it because A. it was a ferrari B. it handled and shifted. Modern cars are a different kettle of fish, when i had my e28s people often complained the clutch was heavy  it's a bloody 80s barge, what do you expect?

Modern ferraris are a bit different, the 355 is lighter (in both steering and clutch), the 360 is supposedly better (never tried it, anyone with one want to let me have a go?.......thought not) but i suppose this is one reason for tiptronic, nancy onwers who only bought the car to pose in cause it's a ferrari, not to experience an amazing machine.

The countach is a pig to drive, but i know someone who bought one purely because it was his dream car when he was a kid, never mind he can't handle it properly and dreads going into town (visibility is poor to say the least). He wanted it, he may hate it in town, but he seems to love it on motorways :D

The 80s/early 90s italian sports cars were meant to be at home on the track or some open road in europe, it was before CEOs started buying into the name to such a huge extent.

I spoke to one of the guys at a Scoobynet meet who has a 355 (as well as his STi7 and an R1.. git :D ). He doesn't like driving the 355... he hated the gated gear select and the steering... he was pretty disappointed with it really. His words were along the lines of "the STi is more fun to drive"

If i had the cash it's definitely be a big rumbling british V8 but i'd still be tempted to get an old 308GTS QV just coz they look and sound so damn good.

I agree with u Ferarris sound real nice, my boss has had a 355 and 360 Modena with nancy autospastic tiptronic but he now has a Vanquish, sounds better than any other car I have ever heard.

I said to him the otherday, "I'd pay a £1000.00 to have an exauhst that sounded like that!", he laughed and said "I paid £140,000 to have an exauhst that sounds like that", cheeky fecker.

LOL

hehe class!

thing is, do you want a luxury car or a proper sports car? if that's the only fault of the 348 i might buy one. my TVR's clutch is heavy and has no PAS with quite wide front tyres. It's part of the experience. If i was 75 and needed something luxurious i'd have bought a xkr or something. I want something that makes me feel alive... this is why the elise is so popular. the other extreme would be something like the mitsubishi gto which has so many electronic gizmos to help the driver it's been compared to driving an arcade game

still, each to their own :)

The bloke I know with a 360 modena drives it all the time!

The noise was amazing when I went for a 165mph spin in it! The engine behind you sounds weird at first, but the exhaust note is like no other cars, makes a noise similar to an F1 car I though, loud but high pitched sort of thing. My mate could hear us go down the dual carriageway 3 miles and back :D

Cheers,

Richard

Ferrari's sound to gay, just not gruff and balls enough, now a race tuned chevy on full song, now thats a completely different kettle of 'fish', watching him pull out at least 5 car lengths on you every second, is something to behold!!!!!

Starionman,

That's Fu**ing harsh, he is a top bloke who has helped me out alot!. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't even have a 200. He started his business on his own and worked his arse off for every penny he has, he is not up himself, arogant or condasending. Coments like you make are not called for. What was said by me was in a joking sort of manner, he is that down to earth that he doesn't even like people talking about his car for just that reason.

I hope I can achieve a lot and own a supercar and a 40 million buiness when I am 36 and still not have my head stuck up my arse like some small minded people.

Best Sounding cars I've had the priviledge of hearing.

Michael Schumachers 1990 F1 car.
Aston Martin Virage Vantage (From the Driver's seat)
Ferrari 355 from the Drivers seat.
My 200 at ***mph in the Rotherhithe tunnel. :D
MG X Power Touring car (at Thruxton in passenger seat - the sound of that straight cut gear box)
McLaren F1 (From Drivers seat :p)
Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona in full race trim with side exit exhaust.

The clutch on the Ferrari isn't that bad, it's the gate on the gearbox that is crap for low speed driving........

.... but get it on a track and it's completely different:notworthy

Nah,

The only ones I have driven were the 355 at Thruxton, an ex colleagues Aston and the F1 was at their Woking Place (I went there for a job interview supporting the laptops blah blah blah. Needless to say, I didn't get the job, but I did see an F1 car "Boot Up" it was pretty cool. :D):notworthy

P.S. I didn't actually drive the F1, just sat in it when they fired up the engine. :D:thumbs:

My mate has ...............
He sprayed the benetton he won his first title in, and obviously someone had to steer while they pushed it about. My mate Bind was the only bloke thin enough to get in it :D :D
They offered to start the engine and let him rip it around the car park, but he politely declined :D  :D

I have a 200Sx and a 300ZX - I find the 300ZX feels better on motorways, while the 200 is great around town and on motorways. IF a car is made for top speed as a priority, it tends to limit it's abilities/driving experience at normal speeds IMHO.

That's why a 200SX is a great car.
