Don't laugh at me please.
Both computers I use have 56k modems but download stuff at about 2k a second.
So what does 56k modem mean ?

It's complicated, and my brains a bit mashed at the moment after a 9 and a half hour day in work but basically you wont get 56k download speed, maximum will be about 4 or 5kbps
Do you know what make of modem it is?
Modem speeds are quoted in kiloBITS per second, or as it used to be known baud rate. Downloads are measured in kiloBYTES, there are 8 bits to a byte. Therefore 2 KB/sec download would be 16Kb/sec. Still fairly slow though, 3 to 4 KB/sec would be a good average.

EDIT cos I can type download with missing a letter out.

it's kinda your actual negotiated connection speed (the number that pops up after you connect), divide it by 8, minus a bit for CRC check data etc and then consider the contention. Basically feck all.
Sustained 4-5KBs is pretty bloody good for a modem.
try http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ to find out kinda exactly what throughput you have.

As Andy says... it's bits n' bytes. The reason you get less than the 7000 bytes per sec you should get from a 56,000bit/sec modem is a combination of the restrictions of the physical cabling and the network speeed itself.
I've had my download speed double by changing the modem cable to one 2 feet shorter. The same PC/Modem/Cable setup ran about 25% quicker again when plugged into a different phone line in a different house. Consider yourself lucky if the dial up connects at the full 56,000 cuz it quite common to only get it connect at 28k, 34k, 44k etc.

Your raw speed was 43304.96 bits per second
not bad for my tired old modem... :) and im having a slow day today too... I supose it helps being able to see my exchange... :D
So mine says 113200 bps at the mo - so this is good? It's still feckin slow!!

The speedtest is giving me between 33kbits and 37kbits per second.
I'll try shorter cables.

You probably got that from the network properties icon form your taskbar. It doesn't allways tell the truth about your true connection speed. Use the speed tester to see how fast your connection actually is.
I got 436.1 kilobits per second on my P.C. at home , is that any good
Yeah not bad for a half megabit service.

But not as good as mine - 470 Kbits/sec!
