For only £500 what in your opinion is a good car to get.
Reason why i am asking a guy at work only has £1000 to spend, he has never had his own insurance, and as such his insurance will be mega expensive he is 27.
example quote G reg nova 1.3SR £600 TPFT
so what do you think he should get?
mk2 Jetta gti 8v - same as the golf, but slightly cheaper to buy and cheaper insurance.
great fun and should be able to get one + insurance for under a grand unless he lives in a dodgy area.
Might only last a year at that price, but who cares, just get another one a year later :)
like this one (http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW/CARS_popup.asp?modelexact=1&make=VOLKSWAGEN&min_pr=&postcode=abc123&source=0&model=JETTA&max_pr=1000&sort=3&variant=&mileage=&miles=1500&keywords=&agerange=&max_records=50&search.x=47&search.y=5&start=5&distance=85&adcategory=CARS&channel=CARS&id=200320090171731) :D
can't say fairer than £450 really now can you
Get something that's 15 years old or more and you can get classic car insurance on it. How's a 5-series Beemer with classic car insurance that costs £90 a year fully comp sound? That's what mine costs me (I've been driving a while though), surely it wouldn't cost that much more for a first timer. As a comparison (this was NOT on classic insurance btw), my friend's first insurance 3 months after passing his test cost him £600 fully comp on a Fiesta XR2i. He was 28 at the time. An old 318i BMW should be dirt cheap on classic insurance. One that's been looked after should be easy to find for £500 or less. I got my 518i for £600 and it had only 75k on the clock and had been really well looked after by it's single owner from new :D
If he can't go fast, go fun! Tell him to get a sierra (£200 or less) and he can learn the ways of RWD with the comfort of super predictability.

 £90 seems damn low? a couple of years ago i had an E28 525i i used to drive *ahem* ignoring the legal issues here. But i got my old man to use it aswell and his insurance was £300 tpft on a classic policy, that's a 50y/o with full NCB garaged etc and limited mileage.
PS, i got the bimmer free and sold it on a little over a year later for £100 with no MOT or tax

It's with Firebond. And yes, it's on an E28. They also offered me £150 a year fully comp on an E28 M535i :D

Firebond. I'm 29 by the way so I don't know if you have to be 25 or over. They offered me Dad something daft like £99 fully comp for an E28 M535i
classic insurance was the only way i could get a half decent fast rwd car :)
the facts
17 years old, low risk area, Triumph Dolomite Sprint ( 130 brake 2.0 16v)
£1450 fully comp unlimited mileage
now that sounds a lot but they wanted 1000 pound to insure something like a nova
the only thing that stops me getting a 2***** is the insurance

chip over to the car auctions... :D and there can be found a whole host of interesting RWD motors... :) old 3 series Bimmers.. only a few hundred quid... and less than a ton for a 5 series...
im not a huge fan of em, but for about £500 BMW arnt a bad motor..
just love the auctions... :) my boat car - F reg Volvo 340 with MOT, leccy windows, sunroof, heated seats, no rust... £35!!!!! ran it for over a year, then a woman crashed into it, and i won £400 back off her insurance!!
Series 1 Merc 190 (B, C or D reg). Built from stone, quite a few are being sold by their one and only old duffer owner. Cheep to run and will last forever.
I'll second the Volvo 3 series. I had a 360 (with a 2 litre engine) for over three years. Ran it from 90k to nearly 160k miles and the only thing that went wrong was a dodgy plug cap! Cheap to buy due to the image, but well built and with the bigger engine it's surprisingly quick.

Capri 2.8i - he'll learn to love RWD or he'll die trying  :finger:

odd, his was with firebond too, probably the local broker took a large cut of the money. And i ended up buying a 535i afterwards too, in black :D

I second that, great cars and engines last forever!
You should be able to get an E, F or G reg for less than a grand as well. :)
