Yes, it’s an MX5, and I really hope it keeps my attention.

The Outside

It’s not all that special on the exterior, but there are next to no car park dings, and definitely no rust, so its prime for a respray and some nice wide dishy wheels :)

Spec:
Original Garage Vary front lip, Slimline fog/driving lights, Smoked front indicators (U.S import), Clear side repeaters, Aftermarket mirrors, Headlight cover (Passenger side) with air intake, Rear short mudflaps, Lip spoiler, not so cool rear lights, Polished front and red rear tow-eyes, Fox racing wheels on new R888's, Mazdaspeed (Rays) MS-03 shod with new Yoko Parada Spec-2

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/itsy_bitsy88/Mx5/yay.jpg

The Interior

Pimp spec, mk2.5 interior which is fitted extremely well, and makes such a difference! Feels like a modern car

Spec:
Carbing 4-point Roll cage (soon to be 6 with my door bars), Door cards with Red inserts and silver dash console/gear surround, ILM leather gear knob, Custom Carbon-leather trimmed Instrument binnacle, arm-rest, passenger airbag cover and gear lever gaitor, various gauges, LED Air/Fuel Meter, I-shift customizable shift light on dashboard, LC-1 Wideband socket, Cobra Monaco (Red) Drivers seat and Monaco S (black) Passengers eat (to go), Sparco 4-point harness on drivers side, Alpine DVD GPS Sat-Nav with Nokia hands free shizzle.

Plans :) :)

Swap engine (should be out by Thursday, new one in early the week after)
Respray
Full closure alarm
New wheels, not sure which yet, but they will be 15x8
New racing snake seats, but may just fit the refurbed RX7 ones (http://s134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/itsy_bitsy88/Mx5/?action=view&current=DSCF0125.jpg)out of my current one.

Most importantly, cover 1000miles run in when I get back from hols on the 25th, for a weekend on track at Brawdy on the 29th. Its gonna be tight! :wack:

Hope you like

EDIT: New wheels

Looks like fun bud... you got rid of the Honda already :o

Madda

Yeah, s2k gone. It is an amazing car but I am not rich enough to have a £10k motor depreciating on my drive. Ben who came down with me has just graduated and was one of the lucky ones to get a decent job, so he is buying it off me (I say buying, cos he still owes me some spondula).

He loves it bigtime!

Back on the Mx5, it should be a monster for a 1/4 of the price and do similar mpg when Im nice to it.

Good to know the Honda is in good hands.

My mate from up here had a Supercharged 1.6 w/ Nitrous LOL made for some serious fun 1/4 Mile runs!!! I think he done a 13 Flat with it going "pop" with about 200 Yards to go!!!

It a 1.8 or a 1.6?

Its the 1.6. I went in Jonboys 1.8 at the hillcllimb which was awesome, then went and looked at this, and didnt feel any significant difference, so when this one came up, the fact it was only a 1.6 wasnt really an issue for me.

I have never had a supercharged car before, so it should be fun, but it wont be working for a while yet :(

I give it 6 weeks :p

I promise I will have it until your car is finished Ben (Q2 2010? :p)

I've heard from a few MX5 owning friends that the 1.6 feels "revvier" if you know what I mean. I dunno how but every single one tells me this. Charged makes them go the way mazda should have made them go ;)

I know the feeling of not working, think I may have broke the 180 :o I honesly think I have the worst luck with Nissan's!

WTF, you got a thread up? Whats going on? If it makes you feel any better the rattle on the s2k is the cat, its about to shit itself. Looked into a decat or taking out its inners (plenty of time to buy one before the next mot), but it will set the ecu fault light off which means Ben wont spot it if anything else goes wrong.

Ahhh, thats what it is... I knew it was something around there but there was like 5 heat shields so assumed it was one of them. There are some DeCats which don't set the CEL off. ;) Search on the S2Ki board. Someone will sort you out.

As for my issue, check the 180sx Tech Section on here to see...

Back on Topic..... MX'5s..... hmmmm me thinks I'll have one as my run about next year!! Micra's are great but kinda dull!

Blimey mate! You change cars more often than I have a hot meal! And (for the most part) they are rather tasty!

The little Mazda looks and sounds like a lot of fun! Sticking with the same colour dfor the re-spray? Or a secret plot to change it to something lairy?

Adam0bmx0
10-08-2009, 11:27
Joe wtf are you like!! lol

I didnt realise you had an s2k, but where did the black 1.6 go? She was a gem, but i knew you would want more power after about a week of driving it!!

The new spec looks sweet mate, although im sure you'll change the ECU at some point and get it mapped on something decent. ;)

I might pop up to Brawdy as it does look awsome! Not sure if i'll be in the sx though as 2 drift days in 1 month is a bit to expensive.

P.S those alloys are extremely weak, i have these for sale (15x8 ET15)

Adam0bmx0
10-08-2009, 11:56
Well J said he's happy with the price, i just need to decide on what will sell my mx5 better, these with the price increased a bit, or sell it with my 14" Enkie alloys (original Eunos ones). So will put the 5 up for sale on the 14's and if it goes, then these will be up. If J can't get the funds due to his project etc, you'll be next in line. :)

Madda
10-08-2009, 12:16
Do me a deal on these. Def not my cup of tea, but definaltey retro cool so the older MX5 heads will love them :)

They have virtually new tyres and are rays wheels :)

Very :ghey: :wack:

Joking! As I said mate, very nicely specced '5

Good job came with a new engine (was going to ask you about that), as it seems that the guy who had it before had some problems with the last 'rebuilt' one, using a lot of oil and a slight :wack: knock issue.

Has it been supplied with a spare engine then, or that one being rebuilt?

Loving the mk2.5 interior, wonder how much hassle it is to fit.

It fits perfectly, I am told there was a lot of rewiring done, and it took longer to fit one door card than the dash! The previous owner paid for it to be done, and was charged £500 in labour by a mate, so it must have been far from simple. His loss is my gain though, as the job is a1.

The knocking engine is being extracted on Weds, then the builders are collecting it on Thurs, new one should be with me by Tues the following week to be installed. I have done a lot of research on the company and it seems like it was just one of those things.

Hallsy
10-08-2009, 12:31
Cool, sounds like the guy was a bit of an idiot though, he'd had knock issues before but not fitted a knock meter.

Overheating on track, getting oil pressure issues, and only stops after he can hear det through his helmet!! lol!

Sounds like a decent deal on the old engine :)

Madda
10-08-2009, 12:36
Well, he thought it was bottom end, and its definately in the head :whip:, and I had a knock meter with the car, albeit unfitted. Will be better than new in no time. Obv purchase price reflected all you have mentioned and the hassle I now have swapping the lumps over etc.

Ahh, so you bought Gary's old car :)

Before you track it - get an oil cooler fitted and fit a knock sensor - I'm pretty sure oil temps on track killed the last engine...

I've been on a track with Gary when he owned it - mine is quite a bit faster ;P

mk2 dash into a mk1 is a bit of an effort - more time consuming than anything else though :)

Was that before the pulley changes and the intercooler etc? :)

I will be very careful on track as alwys, but already have the knock sensor and cooler, just no piping. Hoping Hose Solutions can sort me out. If not, do you know where I can source a good cooler kit and I will just sell the one I have?

Cheers jon!

Err, it was a while back - can't remember which trackday it was, one of the ones at abingdon :wack: He said it was about 190odd BHP at the time :) It's only a dinky JR M45 on that, so it'll be maxing out at about 220-230BHP or so, so I'll still 'ave it ;) (until the corners anyway)

Most of the cooler kits I've seen are a bit crap - the one MX5 parts sells is pretty much the same as the DW one, same stupidly long hoses etc...

If you have a cooler, I'd find somewhere sensible to put it (wheelarch + ducting and stone protection, behind the rad etc), then either make your own hoses or measure well and get someone like HS or merlin to make you some up. You may also be pushing the rad a bit hard - even standard they can get a bit hot on the track, so it may be worth looking at an ebay alloy rad, make sure you have the undertray on, and look at ducting the nose of the car to make sure all the air goes through the rad, not round it :)

See:

http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=34384

pay heed to Phil's suggestions :)

Jonny
10-08-2009, 16:45
Oh - other alternative cooler wise is to look at a Honda Civic rad (similar height, but narrower), with a vertical oil cooler next to it in the space freed up. Probably a more sensible option if you are handy and going to change the rad anyway :

It will be on the rollers if it gets 500 fault free miles under its belt which shouldnt take too long.

Good news mate :D

The S13 saved the day then!!

So how would you think a Turbo'd one would compare? I'd guess that the 'charged engine should have better driveability being more linear, but do you get the same sort of kick?

The brother-in-law took me out in his XKR and it was definately quick, but very progressive, and not really in yer face. Not that an XKR would be, but it was first ride in a supercharged car

Debating what to do with mine, can see the turbo route being cheaper, but a 'charger would be a nice change :) Enjoying it as it is for now though :D

Before you make the investment either way, I would say its worth the drive up and you can have a go in mine anytime. I am loving the supercharger at the moment, the low end power is great, especially for casual sliding :)

I dont think it will ever be as quick as a 240bhp turbo one, but driveability is really good. Also, even though I am running in, and on an uninvestigated map, it still did 25mpg, compared to the 30 wyou would get out of a standard one. Considering I am constantly going up and down the rev range I dont see that as half bad :D

Anyway, on to the new bits! :D Big thaks to Ben/Evilchap @ Rare Rims :Plug::sxoc:for sorting me out a blinding deal on these wheels. I really found it hard to find the right wheels for the car, and now they are on, I think I made the right choice, I love um. Also tidied up engine, and interior a bit, so here are a few pics :)

Feel free to do the same in mine too... It's only an iddy biddy gt2554R, but there's no lag, boost from 1800RPM... It goes quite well :) It's almost the same power delivery as a supercharger due to the tiddly turbo..

I quite like these myself  Are they T1R's they're shod with?

Wonder about some wider wheels for mine, but think I'll stick with these until I at least need some new tyres.

One thing I will say though - maybe sort out the lights, and get rid of the little fogs ;)

I got the paint mate, many thanks :D

Tyres are T1R's, 195/50/15, and the best bit is, for some reason they are cheaper than budgets at the moment . I paid under £28 per tyre for them!!!

Your car works mate, I thought about swapping the wheels on it, but the BBS on there really do make the car look unstated yet cool as fcuk, I wouldnt be looking to swap them if I was you.

Rear lights - when i got the car I HATED them with a passion, but as time has gone on, they have grown on me a bit. I'm not 100% convinced, but they will do for now. Keeping my eye out for a set like yours, then will swap them around and have a think. Let me know if you see any cheap :)

Fogs - function over form ;) They are bringhter than the main beams and have been wired so that I can have them on like normal fogs, or have them so they only come on when my full beams are on. Makes for excellent lane driving and no need for HID's.

Hallsy
20-09-2009, 12:46
Cool :)

Must admit, I looked through the receipts on mine, and Dave looks like he only paid about that for T1R's also. The joys of 15" ownership :)

I'd only be looking at dishy BBS' I reckon, but I remember how much of a pain polished lips can be. But then I do keep looking at Work Equip 03's as well, but the missus hates them!!

Fair play on the fogs mate, I suppose the std candle powered lights aren't all that!!

Fiddling with the stereo on mine today, seems to be nothing there to fit too, can you remember how Dave's HU was fitted? Must have been some type of bracket in there?

Rubix_Cube
20-09-2009, 14:15
T1R's are Budgets with good advertising Madda... I wore a set out on the S2000 within 2 months LOL Hence it came with the 17s and the Goodyears ;)

Just means they're a bit soft mate, I wore a set of Eagle F1's out pretty quickly on my S13  and they are far from budget.

Budget tyres imo usually have little grip and last forever.

Rubix_Cube
20-09-2009, 15:44
yeah My mate done a direct comparison between F1's and T1R's. Eagle's were £4 dearer (on 17s) and the F1's felt a WHOLE lot better.

Hopefully you'll still have it next weekender :) Would like to see what a FI MX-5 is like.

On the subject of my rear lights, I just won a standard set off eBay for £13 so I will swap them over soon and see of I can decide.

Today I am having the exhaust sorted, and some mods to my intercooler piping :D

Hallsy
21-09-2009, 13:00
Cool - do you think you could send them on to me? Saves me making up my own :)

Rear lights on yours are growing on me, a lot better than some of the other aftermarket ones you see. Although I'm happy enough with the std ones :)

Bought another set of seats for mine last night

Madda
21-09-2009, 13:01
No probs.

What seats did you get? :) What you doing with the Elise ones?

Hallsy
21-09-2009, 13:08
I bought a pair of Sparco Sprints (not the latest design), as they pretty much go straight onto the stock runners.

I made up a bracket for the passenger Elise one as test fit and to see how low I could get it. Fit was pretty good, a lot lower, although the wing did hit the rollbar so you couldn't get it all the way back. I could maybe solve that by mounting it more upright (didn't really want to), or moving it inwards a bit (better option).

Anyway, I'd left it at that for a bit while I was polishing it, then we went out in it and Jane moaned about the Elise seat being really uncomfortable!! She said she was getting pains in here hips & arse after just a few miles!!

So, basically I've bought the Sparco's as they should be comfier, but will depend on position.

I thought about cutting some foam out of the originals, as I just feel like I'm sitting on them, not in them, plus they give me back ache :(

I'll come to a decision one way or another!

Madda
11-10-2009, 18:25
Mapped to 12.5:1 moving towards 11.5:1 at 5k rpm + it made 180bhp 150ft/lb. I am more than happy with that and hope to hit the magic 200bhp when my 150mm overlay pulley is fitted (plus a colder ambient temp will help)

Should get the overlay pulley sorted over the next few weeks then will be back up there for some more tweaking and another power run :)

How is the torque so erratic ?

Thought it would be a perfect curve with a charger ?

Mainly due to the crappy management I am running....and experimenting. I am unfortunately running greddy e-manage blue that only lets you adjust timing and fuelling in 500rpm intervals. This means that its moving a bit at these changeover points. BUT in reality, this 'erratic' looking graph is at a very tight scale, so the jumps in the earlier part of the rev range only represent a difference of 1 or 2 ft/lbs of torque from the line of best fit.

The bigger concern is the drop off of torque after its peak. I believe this is due to my silent restrictive exhaust, but as this car is a daily (and a very comfortable one at that) I won’t be changing it for a less restrictive exhaust which will inevitably make more noise. :ghey:

The main thing is, it’s safely fuelled and conservatively timed for longitivity....plus, its a little fooking rocket and I love the drive and power delivery!! :D

I am going to try and resist making this one silly and keep it as it is, besides the addition of the other pulley to hopefully make 200bhp in a few weeks.

She was treated to an Apline single din DVD player this morning :)

Nice mate, so you're pretty happy with ~180 bhp in the '5 then?

I'm currently considering the Mini M45 at the mo, and doing my own fabrication - but then I keep wondering about whether a turbo setup would be easier and perhaps cheaper overall.

Although with either I reckon I'd go for a Megasquirt setup.

Nice mate, so you're pretty happy with ~180 bhp in the '5 then?

Awesome, it skids so well which is the main thing. Would be hard to be competitive in BDC with it (although some people manage it), as its insanely quick to transition and doesnt have enough steering lock to compensate for not getting your timing on the power millisecond perfect.

With regard to general driving, remember that little rant I took you on when you bought yours off me? Well, lets just say it will hit the limiter in 5th quite easily on that straight section :D :whip: and having the power there means I can hit the corners quite a bit quicker in it too.

In short, I'm more than happy with it! Want to hit 200bhp, because its so close, but in truth, its already got all the grunt it needs

............

Turbo/Supercharger debate your going through, I just say make sure you drive both before you start spending money. Passenger rides can tell you a lot, but you wont really know what the power delivery is like unless you drive them yourself. Mine is always free for a go. Next in Reading on 20th of the month if you fancy a beer and a go. :)

Emerald's supposed to be decent :) I think it's got a few quirks (no active knock control?) but is generally well regarded :)

If you are planning a meet in Reading, let me know as I'm only just up the road, and assuming my car's working, I can do the other half of the turbo vs. super comparison :)

After a week with the car off the road, I now have it back with the new Emerald ECU fitted. A custom loom was made so that aside from the extra sensors such as MAP and air intake temperature sensor wiring it is very much plug ‘n’ play. It now runs without the AFM too.

The difference in performance is unreal (check the increase in torque at lower revs), it feels like its itching to go all the time!! It’s also really nice to know that I have all the control I need to fine tune it to perfection over time.

MPG should be significantly improved, but I will have to report back on that after I have run a few tanks of fuel through it to get a real average, so will report back on that.

Here is the BEFORE graph when it was running the Greddy e-manage blue using a map the previous owner had done before I bought the car.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/itsy_bitsy88/Mx5/121209MX5presentedgraph.jpg

Now here is the NEW Emerald map. When driving you can definitely notice the smoother power delivery :D

Madda
26-12-2009, 13:16
Dai, no, it doesn't link into the ECU, but you can buy loads of Alpine add-ons to read certain outputs, but these are a total rip off, so I wont be getting them.

Hows it running btw?

I have done over 6k miles in it and am now on my second set of tyres, during this time nothing has broken! I am sad to say that I have never had a Nissan perform like that.

At this moment in time the car is perfect aside from the cold start (which just needs tweaking but my mapper had a baby a few days before Christmas  so I wont be bothering him for a while). Additionally, on the new ECU its doing a lot better on MPG. Even with the supercharger it ran close to what it did from factory on the e-manage, but now its a lot better than a stock 1.6 on a run :D

Going for a New Years Eve shakedown over the Brecon Beacons, and I cant wait

As quick if not quicker point to point. Much less of an investment to worry about slamming into a hedge, and generally more of a pleasure to drive. It's also very managable to skid, but I have to say the 180sx was more balls out and impressive to people watching, the mx5 takes it in its stride a bit too well.

Im so proud of it, a lot of mates have driven it who drive their own fast cars and were more than impressed.

Its also much more comfortable, cheaper to run, and cheaper to fix therefore have done more miles in this already than I did in my last 3 s-bodies combined.

Hey all, haven’t updated this for a while and have recently made some changes :)

As the weather was good on the weekend (for a change) I got the roof down and concentrated on the interior bits I have waiting :)

First were the clocks. Not normally a fan of white dials, but I thought I would give these a go and am very happy with the results:

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/itsy_bitsy88/Mx5/5e6e4391.jpg

Next up was my bucket seat. I had never liked the Monaco range so it needed to go. I opted for a side mount Cobra Suzuka and by mounting it in a fixed position I have got it superlow and love the new driving position :D

I have a huge list of exterior mods waiting, including rear lip (or Bomex bumper, cant decide), sideskirts, cooling panel, stainless steel wiper cowling, hardtop.

….and I said I wasn’t going to mod this one

They are now being fitted, fully aligned and corner weighted by Aviva Autos in Bridgend.

www.aviaautos.co.uk (www.aviaautos.co.uk )

They have an awesome reputation on here and race an Mx5, so hopefully will do a sterling job, I would have changed them myself, but the cost for them to do it was so reasonable, I thought I might as well save myself the hassle.

I should have it back mid-week, so I will report back on the difference then

Hello mate. Awsome car by the way. Just a quick question. Where is your throttle body on this one. Is it still on the inlet or has it been moved to the back if the back of the supercharger? I'm just looking into supercharging at the moment and want to see how others have done it.
How is the throttle response on this one?

Throttles at the back of the supercharger - if you look in the engine bay you can see the dummy throttle body below the red vac pipe :)

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/itsy_bitsy88/Mx5/DSCF0190.jpg

The 'best' throttle response is had by having twin throttle bodies linked, but it's not that popular a conversion at the moment - the decent kits to do it have only recently come out.

If you do, send some my way :) I will test them for you.

To answer your question, the driving/track reponse of the car is insanely good, its very quick to respond. One thing which could be improved is that when I change gear the revs hang/spike a few hundred rpm for a micro-second before dropping down. I think a dual throttle body will solve it which I will try and explain below.

My car is mapped off the MAP sensor, and does not use the TPS or AFM. I believe that when I close the throttle, there is still all the air in the intercooler which hasnt made its way to the inlet manifold, this is causing the spike. By having a dual throttle setup I hope it will solve it.

The car has just done 1,703km of spirited driving back and forth to LeMans with a load of people off the forum. Besides it being an amazing trip, the car returned over 30mpg and there was no crusing for the 1100km I did in France. Lots of fast playing with lots of exotica :D

brilliant thanks,

just out of interest, ive got mine running now and when you lift off the throttle the intercooler pipes all suck flat which is not ideal obviously ha.
im going to have to put my throttle body back onto the plenum for now and maybe fit duel throttle bodys later.
does yours have some kind of bypass so when on overrun the vaccum doesnt suck everything flat. ive noticed that yours does not have any silicone bends just pipe to pipe with a joiner. do these joins suck in when you lift off or when its idling.

hoping i can get mine to run as well as yours does as i really like the sound and the way the engine feels when it revs now ive installed mine. so much nicer than the turbo response.

What charger/engine/management are you using? I’m very interested in how you’re getting on now. Project thread anywhere? If not, get one up!

My pipes do suck in slightly, but, far less than they did at the first attempt. The 2 top bits of silicone are the only culprits and down to some ingenious flared pipework running up the inside of the silicone to about 1cm away from the charger and inlet its all but cured (thanks to Woodys13). As for overrun, it now mainly consists of lots of pops and bangs following the latest session we had tweaking it on the rollers.

When you do get it running at its optimum, not a lot can touch it. I’m not sure if you would have spotted it, so this is on-board footage of one of my runs up the hill at the Weekender (turn your volume down, as its just wind noise sadly).

<object width="873" height="525"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/35qjP7EWG8M&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1?hd=1&amp;border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/35qjP7EWG8M&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;fs=1?hd=1&amp;border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="873" height="525"></embed></object>

Not so positively, I haven’t touched it since coming back from the Weekender, and the nose cone is still covered in an array of Gloucestershire wildlife :wack: Therefore, if you are ever up in Bristol direction, give me a shout and I will happily take you for a spin as it gives me an excuse to bring it into work :)

Just to add, I went out with Joe in the MX5 at the Weekender (not up the hill) and Im 100% converted to charged MX5's - it just feels insanely light, so is so chuckable you end up flying round corners at speeds that wouldnt even be conceivable in a 200. The curly one can pedal a bit as well ;)

Yeah, the mini setup is not a plug'n'play option by any means, but it is the cheapest way of doing it for sure. Craig who maps mine did a mini set up recently (the guy went to him after seeing my dyno charts). IIRC he got over 200bhp out of that too.

Second option Si is keeping your eye out for a Mx5 boasting an MP62 set up which I can buy and steal the charger from (a 90 would be silly, but I would give it a go!). I will then sell my m45 setup to you for much cheapness Si. Yes, I will be raping another car, but I desperately don’t want to get bored of this one, and most members know what I'm like. :(

After my Rotas were stolen about 2 months ago I have been waiting for thier replacements and running on standards or weak offset wheels. In fact, I hardly used the car for this time as it looked so weak!

Unfortunately, they were stolen from Jamie K, so he had to replace them. Funds were tight, so I didn't rush him, but in the end he came through like a star.

I was a bit worried before getting the arch roller out as they definitely needed a lot of pulling as they virtually sat on the wings on the first test fit :wack: I cant thank my mate NightWalker mate Woodys13 :Plug: enough for spending the time to roll them very slowly and not crack any paint.

It's a bit of an unknown. It was initially advertised without pics as a Hard Dog for £200, so I jumped on it. When it turned out it wasn't, I still liked it but knocked £50 off the price and got shipping included.

So, I think its a TR Lane :wack:

Madda, I was just thinking of clearance on the arches, I know you've pulled the arches but it still looks pretty close!

Si - I run a tr lane hd with non X double diagonal (asked for it as a special but he now sells them like this on his site). I went for this over the gp as it had more head clearance (height) and mounts similar to one of the harddog ones. hd does sit further forward, but I'm running sparco Sprint jnr's and my head gets nowhere near the bar. still need to pad it though.

There's some pics on here in my project thread (that needs updating!)

No, clearence is fine, about 2mm to spare on full compression :D 3 big blokes weighing each corner down to make sure I had the clearence seemed to work fine. It's mm perfect :D. Had it rub slightly on the front nearside during fast drifting, but we will sort that easily. Day to day fast driving its 100% fine.

Breakers, no sorry mate, I haven't had one to steal parts from since the turbo one I got the Emerald ECU from about 9months ago now :) Really haven't got many mods left to do, so I have no reason to buy rusty cars to steal them from.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/itsy_bitsy88/Mx5/Mx5%20engine%20swap/10101016.jpg

As the 1.6 engine was brand new 13k kilometres ago, we didn’t have to deal with any seized bolts. That said, we pulled the engine separate from the gearbox this time, and with the benefit of hindsight I think it was easier getting it out with the box on. You live and learn, but hopefully we won’t be doing it again for a good while!

Thursday 14th October - we had a few hours to spend on it last night, and we aimed to get the cage bolted down properly, finish the audio wiring and start off the cleaning process.

Firstly the Hard Dog cage; the fit is awesome, it’s so tight and is in another league to the other things on the market. It took a bit longer than we expected to get it in, but it was worth it.

At the same time, I added some amp’d 13cm Alpine speakers to the parcel shelf and an Alpine amplifier behind the passenger seat. The difference in sound now that I have some fill in from the rear of the car is unreal. I am very happy with the results. We did not cut the carpet as the sound travels through it just fine and I don’t want chavvy speakers showing in the back. The rear shelf carpet was actually cut for a Carbing cage so the holes are slightly out…but luckily I have a new shelf carpet waiting for when I finish the rest of the car.

I forgot my camera, so iPhone pics had to do.

Nice work mate - any reason you pulled the engine, other than a cleanup? Are you fitting something different?

Can see where TRL got his inspiration from for the TD rollbar, that hardog looks to mount pretty much the same as my bar. Obviously the bent rear stays are different.

Can't see in that pic, but what method does your car have for tensioning the SC belt? Do you use an overlay on crank pully with it's own belt to SC, or does it use a longer accesory belt to go around PAS, a/c and SC?

Should be sorting mine soon, sorting out an MS1 next week, and hopefully starting on brackets to mount SC, etc - will be funds limiting over the next couple of months, but hope to get it sorted before xmas :D

Oh, and is that rear deck carpet a mk1 one? It looks a bit nicer than my one!!

I did notice you posting on a MS1 thread, so I did suspect as much :D

I had a TRL cage for about a week, but I got to be honest, it was worlds apart from the hard dog in terms of rigidity and finish, but defintely good for the money.

I was using the same 4-rib belt to drive the charger and PAS from a 150mm crank overlay pulley, but this is all changing. :D

Charger is sold.....a 1998 1.8 along with a 6-speed box from a mk2 RS is going in...to support this.... :D

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/itsy_bitsy88/Mx5/DSCF0082.jpg

It will be running 6-rib on a seperate belt system with an autotensioner . I think I now have everything I need either here or on its way from the states. The only thing I need to source is some 550cc injectors.

Pulley combo I've gone for means I have everything needed to get very near 300bhp/tonne :wack:

Nice, which sc is that? mp62? Should be mega!

Fair point about TRL but you had a GP bar iirc, which imo always looked to be a bit of a lesser design. Mine is a TD one which is pretty much a copy of what you have above in terms of fitting points. CDS is larger on the HD though i think.

You still using the emerald then?

People are :ghey: thats not running as much as they make the pullies to run, I could try and push more. Mi5 got 280ish out of the pulley combo I've gone for, but I am confident Craig will get a bit more out of it when mapping than a home tuner will, but we will see.

At this power I have to be prepared for an engine to blow, but who cares, i can buy 2 spare engines for the price of some forged pistons for one of my old s-bodies :wack:

The joys of NOT owning a RB26 anymore :D

Sunday 17th October - one week in and we planned to have the engine back in by now, but a few things have taken a little longer than expected. The main one was fabricating a bracket to mount the 1.6 coil packs to the 1.8 engine. We antisipated this would take an hour but ended up spending 3+ hours getting it right. There is no real rush to get it done, but at the same time, we are trying to stick to our 2 week target.

I also run into a problem by which the sandwich plate and oil filter on together will not clear the support bracket for the inlet manifold. I'm waiting to see what the solution is for this but I may go for a relocated oil filter kit. I am just waiting to hear back from Think Auto.

The guy supplying my Dual Throttle body kit has gone quiet, but I hope this is in transit; I will drop him a PM later.

My crank pulley and fuel rail are on their way from the US still.

The longer manifold studs are fitted as is the BRP Bracket for the charger, and the clutch has been swapped and aligned ready for fitting.

Which means all we have left to do before putting in the engine is sorting the oil cooler really as everything else is up top and can be done with the engine in situ. I suppose the filter relocation kit can also be done with the engine in place but we want to know which direction I am going in as if it requires modifying the bracket this will be much easier to do with the engine out.

On a side note, when over 2000 modified cars decend on your doorstep you have to go take a look and I have to admit it's nice for your hard work to be noticed in such a crowd.

Bar, I saw your spreader plates. These ones are like 3 times as big and not flat, they are shaped with the car. That said, I think Hallsy has a bar which is more of a copy of the Hard Dog than the one you have and he rates it highly.

Tuesday 19th October – over the last 9 days we have spent approximately 15hours working on the car, so I think we are doing quite well. I only had an hour on it last night, but it was a productive one.

I had a problem where the oil filter would not fit with the oil cooler thermostatic plate in place but after speaking to Jonboy I removed a superfluous support bar its all go now.

I also fitted my knock sensor in an ideal place smack in the centre of the block and changed the auxiliary belts whilst the lump is out of the car.

So it’s now all ready to drop back into the bay, just need to tighten up the headers and work out where the support bracket for the new supercharger mounts to.

The main problem is, I’m still waiting for injectors, a fat fuel rail, and a pulley set for the charger from the US. These have left the mainland in the US on the 19th so there is a slim chance I will be able to have it all together by Sunday evening, almost meeting our 2 week target.

Hallsy, took loads of pics of the bracket for you, but I didn’t have the memory card reader where I stayed last night. I will get them off tonight for you

Front and rears are 1.8's using Axis Ultimate pads. I also have braided lines all round. TBH, these have done me well, and not let me down. The closest I have come to going beyond their limits was with Docwra when we were hooning through some lanes. :wack:

Saturday 23rd October – we are now running very close to our 2 week target, and unfortunately its not going to happen. We are still waiting for a number of part from America, and the fitting of the MP62 is being a bit of a nightmare. A box of bolts that we don’t know where they go is causing issues. I asked the guy who took it off the other car to mark up where things came from and take pics along the way, but this didn’t happen and is costing hours as a result :(

Anyway, things are still progressing well, and providing the bits arrive next week, we should be ready for it to go to my local exhaust builders for a custom downpipe, intercooler piping mods and a solution to link up the charger to the DDM cold air chamber and filter.

Today we went from this:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/itsy_bitsy88/Mx5/Mx5%20engine%20swap/DSCF0001.jpg

To this. Gearbox is on and the underside is all mounted up. We trial fitted the radiator and things are going to be TIGHT once the 6 rib pulley is placed in front of the crank pulley which is one of the things we are waiting for. It doesn’t make sense for the radiator to be in place until the pulley is fitted.

We also had to make the thermostat housing which turned out good, but none of the online guides we are are using really mentioned it, so this was time we hadn't accounted for.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/itsy_bitsy88/Mx5/Mx5%20engine%20swap/DSCF0006.jpg

Need to source an IC really, I reckon it's worth designing the pipework around one from the off.

Sorted a charger & bypass valve out, just waiting on a delivery price. Just need to order the MS1 and wideband now

Monday 24th October - Thursday 4th November- keeping the ball rolling on the updates, due to work commitments madda has been unable to make it to the garage so where possible i've been keeping progress moving in the right direction :)

first few jobs once the engine was in place were getting any standard wiring tweeks done and fitting the prop and PPF. Also the Alternator had to be changed from a mk2 1.8 to a mk1 1.8 type due to the ECU not being able to regulate the mk2 alterntor, Jamie K was able to quickly get hold of one and this wa fitted by the 30th.

onto more interesting thing, once the hassle of getting parts from parcel force was sorted i moved onto intalling the dual-feed fuel rail, which wasn't quite right :furious:
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i228/Technician_nic/maada%20brp%20mx5/00e01098.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i228/Technician_nic/maada%20brp%20mx5/bfb82857.jpg
one of the line in/out points was in the wrong position and with the inlet plenum in place the shown fitting or a 90elbow wouln't fit, it would have to be move over almost above number 4 to fit in the avalible space.

550cc high impendance injector - a bit more progress (although it will all have to come back off once the fuel rail issue is resolved) replaced exiting injectors:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i228/Technician_nic/maada%20brp%20mx5/868f0f1e.jpg

Mocal Oil cooler - all fitted in place but had to be removed to force the understandably tight push fit fittings, it involved leaving them in boiling water then using all avalible strengh to force them on, still not on flush but there' not even the slightest movement in them. to be safe i'm waiting to speek to the supplier to confirm if ok or if jubilee hose clips should be used

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i228/Technician_nic/maada%20brp%20mx5/9d58b788.jpg

131mm Crank pully - a while was spent tweeking a spacer adviced to use, should of checked before wating time :annoyed: as the pully sits around 7mm off the ARB and so no chance the 9mm spacer would fit plus the approx 1mm difference between the s/c pully suggests it wasnt needed. so new bolts to suitable length and the pully is fitted

sadly that's all to date. still to fit - oil cooler, BRP supercharger, RAD and all assiciated parts. it's going to be very snug i'm having to adjust brackets ect as i go, e.g. a power steering fixing that had to be tweeked as it was right in the path of the S/C belt

What IC core are you using? Have you moved your rad back at all?

Amazing work by Woody :D

the Rad had to be leaned back a little at the top to allow space for the I/C piping plus i removed the A/C brackets to give space, as it is now you'd never get the A/C rad in...

Pretty sure the old injectors were the standard 1.8s once but i'm sure Madda will confirm

IC core is a custom one made by Forge copying the TDR one loosely I believe. Its a really nice bit of kit and something Gary paid silly money to have made.

It's off road at the mo, didn't have any time over xmas to move on with sc, but I'm still chipping away at it.

I've stripped the charger ready for rebuild, just got to order the bits. Mounting bracket & outlet are done, tensioner is programmed into our CNC but our toolmaker hasn't had chance to do it for me yet, just got to make inlet and sort an IC out - then I can move on to the electrics.

Going to run a 11% reduction pulley, the OEM one was a totoal bitch to remove so I'm not gonna bother putting an OEM one back on!!!

I think the orange inners will look OK against the silver - nice contrast :)

Basically too much compression in the engine to go as aggressive with the timing as he would have liked. Options were less boost or compensate with the iginition set up. I couldn't reduce the boost without getting different pullies from America so went with the ignition map changes.

Only time will tell how long it will last, but Im confident it will be ok and then maybe go for a forged low compression set up when it goes off the road for next winter.

In the end it made about 30-40 bhp and similar torque gains over the old set up with a modest rev limit. Throttle response is insanely good now, and she really doesnt hang about, but I am not going to hit the 300bhp/tonnne target without opening the engine.

Spent 9 hours on the car yesterday.

In that time we fitted some Whiteline anti-roll bars
Fixed an oil leak from the back of the engine, and changed all rear seals whilst we were at it for peace of mind
Sorted the rocker cover gasket
Sorted an air leak which was making it sound like a jet engine on idle. This is fixed for now, but will require a more permanent fix when I have the time to get a new spacer plate made up.

The most rewardingly fitted the BBS which I have had in wait all winter. Also tried KFCs Wantabees which look great too, but the BBS had to stay as they are an itch I had to scratch. I have wanted a set since I had my first car. :D

Hope you this they are an improvement over the Sportsmax. I am very pleased with the offset and look, and I think I am going to leave the centres the colour that they are.

Cluster looks awesome mate - what sort is it?

Not so keen on the lights though, I like the std ones, although I can understand it if these ones perform better!

Also painted the rocker cover the same colour as the car (mainly because it was the cheapest option) but I think its works :)

That dash looks pimp mate! The rear end is looking rather tidy as well!

What brakes are you running at the moment? My current debate is what I shoul upgrade to, as the greenstuff and EBC discs that came with mine are utter gash!

Im just running a 1.8 setup on Axiss pads and rate them highly. If you can get hold of a set of mk2.5 sport brakes they are the upgrade of choice but are normally £350+....worth it though.

Cheers mate, some mixed opinions on the rear end :p I might run without the metal rings around the lights, unsure yet. Its locked away today so I can't play with it :(
