View Full Version : Something wierd from Microsoft
Other than XP or any other their other stupid programs...
This morning I checked my mail on the server and there is a mail from support@microsoft.com
All the email says is
"The requested information is included with the attachment"
Or something along those lines.
And the attachment is about 50k and called "Screen_temp.pif"
Now, i have not contacted the swine for anything and further, I have NEVER used my business address to contact them.
Something fishy methinks?
The REALLY odd thing is that the title is "Approved (Ref....." (can't remember the ref number, so it appears that contact has been made, but not by me.
Microsoft infested with viruses perhaps?

I am pretty sure this is a virus. It is not so difficult these days to make it look as though an email has come from someone other than the real sender.
I would recommend deleting it (shift and delete) completely.
As always, never open an attachement unless you know the person who sent it, and you were expecting it.
(Now I am starting to sound like my old IT manager.....)

Dear Subscriber
Aliases:
W32.HLLW.Mankx@mm (Symantec), I-Worm.Palyh (Kaspersky), W32/Palyh-A (Sophos) and W32/Palyh@MM (NAI)
Description of Incident
W32/Palyh.A is a mass mailing worm which appears to come from support@microsoft.com and contains an attached file of type .PIF. It searches for valid email addresses in any files of type .WAB (Windows Address Book), .dbx, .htm, .html, .eml and .txt. A user must click on the file attachment in order for the worm to run. It can also attempt to spread through network shares. The worm is set to deactivate on 31.5.2003.
Attachments:
Several file names may precede a file type of .PIF.
Ignore anything sent via email by Microsoft as they never ever send via email. Always check the official websites to get genuine updates and patches!

Good source of any IT news is www.theregister.co.uk

Why did support @ microsoft send me a virus this morning?
Windows users everywhere are urged to update their anti-virus definitions following the discovery of a new worm, which poses as one of a series of odd messages from Microsoft.
Palyh (AKA Mankx), got a strong start of the weekend and is spreading rapidly, at least if our own in-boxes are anything to go by.
The pest is an email and network attack worm that includes a downloaded Trojan horse component, according to a preliminary analysis of the virus by security outfit iDefense. After a computer is infected with the worm it attempts to create copies of itself in remotely shared startup locations on a network.
This behaviour means the virus is likely to be prolific. As usual Mac and Linux users are immune from infection.
