Oh Man - this is the thread i've been dreading.
I've been 'craving' an R/C car for months now. Not sure why - I just want one. And seeing your Grasshopper - that was my first R/C car.
Use to have a tamyia F1 RC which was lightning fast(!!) with my 'Fat Boy' engine upgrade in.
In my days (as a 11-15 year old) I had (all tamiya as thats what my local Beaties sold):
Grasshopper,
Manta Ray,
Middnight Pumpkin (think that was wat is was called)
F1
Had another 4x4 thingy but i've no idea on teh name of that though.
Spent loads of cash on the F1 with lighter radio gear better speedo, 'Fat Boy' motor etc... and it was epic. In the dry is was an absolutly awesome (on the flattest of flat surfaces) in the wet/damn it did nothing but doughnut.
I'm getting more and more into RC. I've got two at the moment, Kyosho Ultima RB which was third hand when I got it and is utterly broken, and a Kyosho DBX which is ace.
I also got a little VW camper from tesco a few months back ;)
Got about 10 cars on my wish list at the moment. Trying really hard not to get them!!

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd262/ebonicsx/19082008001.jpg
Haha! The grasshopper was out the same time as my Avante 2001! Didn't realise they had 'classic' status now! Will try to get some pics of it later. Its a bit battered but its used. Jumps, kicks, dog attacks and all!
Would love a Nitro one but lack of funds for the time being :(
il put up pictures of my big brothers rc drift car since mines nothing compared to his, iv got an old bashed up tc4 which is not worth puting the pics up and my brothers got a tc5

my first RC car was a Tamiya Falcon back in the mid 80's when they had just come out
since then I have had more RC cars than I can remember and spent more money than I'd like to think :wack:
used to race 1/10 electric, then moved onto 1/8 rallycross, still got them in the attic but not used them for a couple of years, should sell them really as there is a fortune up there...
yea when i get the time ( about twice a year) 1/8th off road is the thing to do. i have a Mugen MBX5 that does the job for me with a Rossi Mamba .21 . Good car and works well for me although its a bit long in the tooth now LoL . Would love to buy the new MBX6 but with having to open on a Sunday it's not an option.

It was off here funnily enough! paid £90
a few come up on ebay for around that money though!
2 cars with 12 mint shells went for £240 the other day,but i didn't have that much cash available
Heres the only one on the bay atm http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/yokomo-mr4tc-custom-drift-car-not-hpi-or-tamiya_W0QQitemZ120445467065QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN?hash=item1c0b1bf9b9&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C 301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50
Damn that brings back memories, my first car was a Tamiya Falcon which I soon found wasn't really up to racing! It's still sitting in my parents loft together with a Schumacher Cougar and an Associated RC10B2. I still have my last car, a Mugen MBX4 in my garage.

Umm yep that was me, sorry:o Small world hey. I would have this off you but have spent my spare cash else where (the 200 as usual). Good luck with the sale mate it's a great car if set up right:nod:
Raced 4WD 1/10th off-road for years - a mongrel Predator for a while, then more recently a Yokomo MR4-BC Special. Gave up last September after a hopeless F3/F4 Finals on my local car-breaking track: drive a lap, roll a dice to see if it breaks on the triple; drive another lap, roll again... :(
I've also got an Associated RC10L3 Touring (190mm pan car) which was awesome when a few of us had them at West Bridgford indoors, years back. It's got a freshly-painted NSX GT shell, but hasn't been run with it yet.
Maybe once my house move is out of the way I'll see about finding somewhere that'll let me play...

What do people recommend for it? I have been looking at the yokomo stuff but they are hard to source in britain without importing them...would you recommend them over the tamiya's?

The standard advice given out on the R/C forums is to buy whichever car is most popular at your local club, and/or whichever your local (proper) model shop sells. This makes it much easier to get advice and spare parts!

My brothers talking about racing again this year, so might take mine up for the laugh, will get some pics takin later on and post them up. His racer is a tamiya tt01 with every possible hop up on it and an s14a shell:thumbs: though he wouldnt paint it the same colour as my current 1 :(. Any recomendations on tyres for 1/10th touring cars on a carpet track?

Soft compound foam tyres with a tyre additive was always my choice:nod:

nice prezzie, definately take a look at ur glow plug but putting it the ignitor, always worth gettin spare plugs, id also check ur mixture settings and be careful not to flood the engine if ur priming from the tank

heat the engine with a heat gun or hot hair dryer. will make it easier to start.
and also, dont buy your spares from boys toyz, their robbing *funts,
it's cheaper by a mile to buy online from the states, even after vat if you get caught for it.

No idea. I used to use zipgrip back in the day but moved on to some balistic buggy stuff when it became hard to get hold of:nod:
I think they all do much the same job  Quite vital on the cars I used to race:nod:

Ebay, modelsport etc mate. Plenty about
When i was a teen i used to do indoor RC racing, used to be quite successful over the 3 odd years i done it. I used a Schumatcher st2000 carbon chassis car. Had tons of shells. No pics tho! Its all for grabs if some one wants it, il have to check what i got left but had two tool boxs of bits, 10 or more bands, 6-8 batterys, 4 chargers, 4 motors, loads of diffs and ratios, wheels, tyres springs and shocks:thumbs:

Back in the day, i suppose it was!! 9 years ago:eek: Iv not looked at new cars since then, whats the prices and performance comparison these days? I mean if i wer on the market for a "good" chassis these days what would i be looking at to spend and whats the ones to go for?

Quite vital on the cars I used to race:nod:
Yeah i noticed when he first started he didnt have any additive on(didnt have any till a friendly competitor lent him some) for his practise heats and his car was everywhere, especially in the first few laps till the tyres heated up, it used to understeer badly goin into the first corner and oversteer/spin coming out. I know that the additives make the tyres sticky first few laps till the tyres heat up and the additive wears off. Though i think his car was too powerfull for such a short and tight track too it had a 13 or 15 turn motor in it iirc. Im just going to run a 19 turn and spend the extra on really good tyres/additive. If any racers out there can recommend a fairly good combination of the latest tyres/add for indoor carpet racing would be very appreciated:thumbs:

It made a huge difference to the way the car handled I used to change teh aplication depending on the track. Normally covered the rear wheels and did a portion of the fronts around the insides iirc

Yeah he used to cover the outside on the fronts and the whole rears. Though he wasnt a serious racer more of a hobby to him so he never really got indepth into the whys and hows of things like that. I was kinda like his pit crew:wack: i would have tried to set his car up for him and charged batteries while he was on the track(how sad was i) but enjoyed it all the same i was doing similar things to my full sized car for sprints and hillclimbs so could identify with the likes of setting suspension etc. Taking this up really cause its a hell of alot cheaper than full sized vehicles andyour inside out of the weather.

Yeah theres a club just up the road from us that do it indoors and run an outdoor series too abit further away, though purpose built track power points etc. I enjoyed going up with the bro at the time. I know it can be expensive, his race license for rc cars was more expensive than my nationalb speed license:wack:

27-12-2009, 01:15
Yokomo have 14a and Skyline drift car kits available, and Tamiya have a range of drift kits too... Yokomo is the better chassis, but they're both great quality. The main difference between drifters and normal rc touring cars is the tyres, so any 1/10 electric 4wd car will do really (nitro ones don't drift so well...), so if you're not taking it too seriously you can swap between drift and grip for about £15-20 worth of wheels and tyres. Some cars are available complete and ready built, others will come in kit form. Any good model shop will be able to provide you with any bits you may need to complete a kit (usually radio system, steering servo, speed controller and battery/ charger), and probably at a discount if bought with a chassis
Wow,awesome collection Trackstar! :notworthy

Tamiya would be more beginner friendly replacement parts and hop ups are cheap for them with clear and easy instructions on how to build them, but ultimately the yokomo would be more rewarding once youve got the hang of it. Though there is a full carbon fibre chassis kit for the tt01 that will rival yokomo team associate hpi etc which takes it away from being a beginners/toy rc.
Dont cheap out on the batteries, most important part :D

Try towerhobbies for spares like shells/wheels/tyres/upgrades
i got a set of mesh wheels, x thread tyres, foam inserts all delivered for the same price that they wanted in boys toys for just the wheels.
and all of it was the same hpi stuff in both cases.
if you register with them, they send you out catalogs and coupons and stuff aswell.
i must strat cleaning up my rs4 and see if it's still going,
and bring my specter out for a blast.
i really want an electric buggy though, something like the e-revo.
but then, the mini revo, the 1/16th one above looks cool, as does the micro losi.
i could use them up in the attic as they're small.
Aww i wish i never clicked on this thread again. Now i have been on the modelsport web site and i am seriously thinking of going there today and getting one of these (http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=32757). The HPI cup racer is supposed to be pretty good.
Just to add my 2p to what seaside-racer said, I can vouch for Tamiya to be easier to get parts for, Yokomo stuff can be harder to come by, but its still a great chassis. As for the Tamiya TT01, yeah you can do a massive amount to it with so many hop-ups available, but at the end of the day its still a very basic car with limited adjustability. I built up a TT01-E GTR for someone a few weeks back and was disappointed with just how basic it was. If you want to have something you can really tinker with you're better off starting with a better base chassis. Even a higher spec Tamiya, like the TB03 or TA05, will be much, much better, well worth the extra few quid.
This was my TA05 with a few hop ups, ran it in the D1RC series for 2 trouble free years

to be fair, the best cars are going to be the less main stream ones, like ofna, Team Associated, serpant
but most if not all the top cars are kits that you need to choose your own parts like
motor/batteries/electrics.
great for racers but pointless for amatures.

Hmmm could be tempted to change to 1 of these, what are the electric 1s like compared to nitro in proper rugged terrain, would they still have the torque or does there charge dwindle quickly with all the scrambling and grabing for grip

The electric stuff's come on a long way in the last few years. The brushless motors are more powerful, but more efficient, so batteries last longer. Plus the new lipo batteries are higher voltage and MUCH lighter, which also has big benefits with performance and runtime... Look up some youtube stuff if you get a chance sometime, impressive ones would be the E-Revo Brushless Edition, TMaxx Brushless, Firestorm or Savage Flux, or Losi Speed T...

When i was last up at one of the races though the club was talking about banning using lipo batteries iirc, something about them exploding or catching on fire whilst charging. I seen one set get takin out in a metal box cause it was ready to go off, something about charge rates and over heating i think, it kinda put me off using them. Though they do give alot of punch to the cars and last alot longer but you would need to always be watching them whilst charging incase they burnt the house/garage down:wack:
if you use the lipo with the correct chargers they are fine.
i use lipos in my airsoft guns and never had any issues.
with r/c cars, lipos can get damaged if they are let run out of juice completely, so you fit an chip like a mosfet to turn the car off at a certain power level to save the batteries. then you put them into a proper lipo charger and you're grand.
one thing i could see being a problem is that if they are stored in tool boxes, they could get damaged asd they can be very light and thin. the ones i have remind me of a stick of wrigles chewing gum.
they are only as thick as about 2 or 3 CD's and are an inch wide by about 4 inches long.

but that's true of any type cells if overcharged or not charged correctly?
thats also true, i've heard of 2 NiMH packs explode during the summer because they where left to charge for 8 hours mistakenly even though they where fully charged.
well, that was the case with one of them anyway.
think the other one was damaged.

It does happen, especially back in old ni-cad days and before chargers were as advanced as they are now now. I remember having cells vent, blow, short etc!:wack:

Lipos just need to be treated with a bit of respect and they're perfectly safe. All race approved rc lipos are hard-cased to prevent damage
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/trackstar_sx/DSC00634.jpg
Most modern speed controllers have low-voltage cut offs built in to protect them, and Lipo chargers balance the cells at the same time to minimise the chances of getting any problems. They recommend you charge them in a safe container just to be on the safe side (I've got a charging pouch, cost about £6). I've yet to know anyone who's had one explode, takes some serious abuse to do that. One of my mates even hooked one up in the wrong polarity and all it did was trip a protection circuit.

Hi Guys, I wonder if you can help a total RC noob?
For Christmas my mate bought a load of us little RC boats, they're surprisingly quick.
They've got a 180 sized motor in them. One of my buddies (who knows a lot about RC) has already replaced the stock motor in his with a "Reedy Mini Mod 17t AS291" motor.
So, first up, what does 17t mean? Secondly, can anyone suggest a motor that would be faster than his?
It'd be great to secreatly mod it, then out-drag him on the lake!
Cheers!
Hi guys I always liked R/C cars. When I was younger I had a couple.
For Xmas my step brother got me that one they sell in Next and Sainsbury just as a stocking filler type gift. It's a drift R35 that uses some AAA batteries and its 4WD. Has plastic wheels - so good fun on the wooden floors.
I would love to get a better one though - any stores/websites you all recommend? Also how are they powered etc? Whats the price of a decent one?
HPI do electric drift kits.
think they are about 120quid.
modelsport.co.uk do them for 115

18T refes to the amount of "turns" the motor has.
standard on the above car for example is a 27turn motor. great for longer life out of your batteries but a lower Turn motor wil have more torque and rpm (with less bqattery life.)
i think thats basically how t works.

Yakko is there any space in there to fit a slightly bigger motor?
The only way of trumping him with a same size motor is to find a 180 size motor with less than 17turns. Or, get the same motor and change the prop for a more aggressive one to make the most of the extra power... But not being into boats I'm not sure how you'd do that :wack:
Also you'd need to try and find out if the speed controller in it can handle the extra current of a lower turn motor, or you could end up going for a paddle :(

Hey Trackstar.
You can fit a 280 size motor in, just about.
Good point about the speed controller - it's a tiny little combined reciever/speed controller device, I can't imagine it's got much headroom in it really! I might wait and see how Mike gets on - if his boat dies in the middle of the lake, i'll take that as a win for me!

Update! it failed pretty spectacularly! It sank!
Afore mentioned friend swapped the 180 motor for a 280 and changed the battery from NiCad to LiPo.
Certainly was quick, but too heavy, took on too much water and slowly sank beneath the waves. So, if anyone wants a modified RC boat, there's one at the bottom of Fairlands lake.

Started a new thread, but just found this one, so will ask in here.
I'm looking at getting a rc car for messing about with, spurred on by a mate who has just a bought a HBX Rocket Pro:
http://www.storacingproducts.com/hbx-rocket-brushless-rc-buggy.html
I fancy one, to take out with him and razz around. WIll just be messing about I'd say, unless we have any proper tracks nearby, so will be used on grass, dirt/gravel, snow.
I don't really want to spend too much, so been looking at a couple of Maverick models, either the Atom 1:18 which gets pretty good reviews for it's price, or possibly the Strada Evo 1:10, but not read too much about these.
Question I have though, what is the difference between a buggy & a truggy? I know they have different tyres & ground clearance, but what would be used for what? For general messing about as I've mentioned, would I be better with a buggy or truggy?
Going to pop to local model shop this arvo, so hopefully get some advice there, but thought someone in this thread would be able to help :)

Long story short a truggy is a buggy chassis with wider stance, bigger wheels and truck bodyshell. Should be a better basher than a buggy, tend to have better ground clearance, harder to roll etc. When it comes to off road, generally bigger the better, so it can handle rougher terrain. I'd suggest one of the most important things to consider with some of the cheaper ones is check the availability of spares first!
On another note, I've just ordered my next bodyshell :D All I need now is a chassis for it to go on! :(
I had a nice shell for Xmas off the wife,a Skyline r34 police car with working lights

Cheers for that, so basically, for general messing about (i..e not racing) I'd probably be better off with a truggy?
Well, just got back from visiting my LHS and I'm a bit deflated tbh :(
Was pretty keen on a Maverick Atom XT as had heard plenty of good things about them for the price, and looked like a laugh, but they had sold out!!
Asked about a Maverick Strada Evo, but they only had the Touring Car version, no HBX Rocket's either, said they had supply problems.
After that the guy just suggested that 2wd would be better than 4wd for racing (I told him I just wanted to mess around), and suggested a couple of kits for £100, which soon hit £250 once all the bits were added.
Oh well - back to the internetz then!!!

Yeah dude, a truck of any form would be a better basher than a buggy, as would 4WD.
A couple more I'd suggest:
Admittedly its a bit on the small side (1/16th scale), but this is a very good deal:
Traxxas Slash 1/16 (http://www.jespares.com/index.php?orderby=product_cdate&DescOrderBy=ASC&Itemid=2&option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id&manufacturer_id=0&keyword=Traxxas+1%2F16+Slash+XL-2.5+4WD+RTR+SC+Truck&keyword1&keyword2)
Its 4wd, loads of upgrades available, even waterproof. Traxxas are a great brand too, top quality models and spares are everywhere, and this is ready to run...
Similarly, Losi Mini SCT, this one has a brushless motor (much better!) for only a few quid more, but its a newish model, not much feedback on them yet...
Losi Mini SCT (http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=38340)
Some bigger stuff;
HPI Firestorm (http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=28745) Admittedly this is 2wd, basic-ish racing truck, still great for bashing, loads of potential for upgrades and you could even race it if you wanted.
Traxxas Stampede (http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=27569) ...again 2wd, but MASSIVE ground clearance, legendary bashing trucks! I've seen these land on 1 corner from 30 feet up and not damage anything.
Thunder Tiger Sparrowhawk XT truggy (http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=34886) ...To be honest I don't know a huge amount about this, but its 4WD, a good spec for the money, and Thunder Tiger have been about for years...
Thanks mate, I'm now considering second hand options as well now :)
I've put a wanted ad up on here and MSUK.
RC10B4 worth a look, or getting a bit long in the tooth?

The B4 is still a very competitive 2wd race buggy, but its not much of a basher. I had a T4 (truck version of that chassis) which I only bashed once before selling it to a racer :wack:
If you could find a B44, thats the 4wd version, which would be better... Or a Kyosho Lazer ZX-5 would be a nice buggy to bash.
Found a Losi Strike with brushless motor on ebay... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRUSHLESS-Losi-Strike-SCT-1-10th-RC-short-course-truck-/170584624343?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item27b7a2ccd7
I was offered a ZX-5, brushless setup, sounded like a good deal but was more than I wanted to spend really.
I've gone with the B4, for £70 I won't have wasted too much money if I never use it :wack:
Plus, the guy I'm going to out with has bought a buggy, so at least we'll have similar (ish) cars. Then, if I get into it I'll have decided what I want to do, and what sort of car I'd need, so would be clearer on what car I'd buy next!!
Basically it's a B4, 2 shells, LRP Sport ESC, 19T motor, Bluebird metal geared servo, new GRP tyres all around, and Acoms Techniplus 2ch radio.
Wondering how I'll find sticks comapred to a turn wheel Tx, but then I wouldn't really have a preference at this stage, trigger throttle just seems like an easier way!
Need to get a lipo for it, but I already have a charger. Hopefully next weekend I can take it out for a razz!!
Oh and that Losi Strike, I looked at that, but for some reason I'm a little undecided about the SCT's I watched some youtube vids and they looked a little big & heavy. Also the Strike seemed to get a lot of love/hate reviews. Definately looks like a good price for a brushless RTR setup though.

Yeah the Strike didn't go down well with some of the snobby lot, its like taking a GTR to a Ferrari track day, its just as good but people will look down on it. I know a couple of people who have them as bashers, they're quite good for the money.
The B4 will do you well, its easy to get spares for etc, but I would recommend getting a set of imperial allen keys, the kit tools are fairly poo! Is your charger lipo compatible?
I've got a lipo charger for my heli's but it only has a 0.75A output so will take all day to charge a bigger stick. I'll buy a new fast charger.
I can feel the brushless bug pulling me in! Depends how fast it feels brushed I guess!
Yep,i'll be on for that! :thumbs:Saturday or sunday afternoon any good for you mate ? I have a mahoosive private car park ideal for tuning purposes

What tyres would people recommend for my B4?
Looking for two sets really, one set for messing about with on tarmac/paving, etc, and another set for dirt/grass.
It came with brand new GRP conespikes, but after one battery in a lorry park I had worn out the rears!! Plus the front didn't seem to have much grip as it understeered like a bitch under power, although I may need some ballast with the lipo.
Was thinking I'd keep the now nearly bald spikes on rear, and use something like a Staggered Rib up front (a friend gave me some slimmer front wheels from a B2), then keep the front conespikes for dirt/grass and get some new wheels & spikes for rear to go with them.
Any suggestions?

Hallsy, for tarmac etc, Proline dirt hawgs. For off road, full spikes are usually a bit too hardcore for anything other than really wet muddy conditions they just don't work, and wear ridiculously fast. I'd suggest something like a proline bow-tie or schumacher mini pins. Unfortunately they do understeer pretty badly on hard surfaces, tyres like the dirt hawgs might help though.
Pdh14a, sounds to me like it might be a little lean? Do you get any exhaust smoke? No smoke means its too lean, and if you have fuel dripping from the exhaust, its too rich.
If you're just messing about on tarmac, then worn conespikes or Schuey minispikes (blues for hardest wearing) will do fine. I used to race buggies on tarmac (car park) using worn minispikes... If you can still get Schumacher RT1s or RT2s then they're another option, but they may be long gone.
Schumacher minispikes always used to be the default choice for UK off-road - there aren't many surfaces where they don't work at least OK. Again, stick to blues for best wear unless you're getting into competition - although as you're talking 2WD, you might want ribs on the front to take the bite out.
yo guys.. please someone make me an offer for my car inthe for sale thread! need it gone! too many people keep mssing me about !lol

Right,
About ten years ago, I started getting interested in these. I took my son, who was about thirteen then, to a couple of local R/C car meets and he was quite keen. We started by buying a Tamiya Grasshopper which was a good laugh until we repeatedly broke the poxy rear axle on it, not the greatest design. Then we tried a Tamiya M-Chassis and this was really popular until he got bored and wanted a Megadrive (I think, could have been some other video game).
I soldiered on messing around with the M-Chassis because I'm a stubborn git (as well as tired and old). I got curious about replacing the standard plastic box-section with something lighter. I measured everything, drew a replacement on AutoCAD and sent the drawing off to Fibre-Lyte. After Martin Hansell told me off for being a dick and sending him a drawing that needed about two hours work before he could produce my sideplates, I got two carbon fibre plates in the post.
I’ve moved on since then, I tried loads of hop-ups from Tamiya and a few others and ended up with a carbon fibre, four wheel drive, fully ball raced, limited slip diffed, titanium bolted, four shock absorber, super-duper M-Chassis that so far has never turned a wheel in anger. There are no original M-Chassis parts left on this car except for one side of the battery holder and the bumpers – it’s all hop-ups (expensive ones too).
I typed this when no-one else in the house was looking because this car has probably cost me in excess of eight hundred pounds and it’s never moved under its own power. I also had to dig all three cars out from the boxes that they are stored in as I’ve not even seem them for about nine years.
So, before you get all excited about a cheap and cheerful R/C for messing about with and maybe improving a bit at a time, be aware it can be addictive and expensive. It’s really, really expensive, I probably spend less on my SX a year than I did on the R/C car and even then I have never driven it.
Apologies for the essay but I got carried away. Don’t get me wrong about this, I’d do it all again. In fact I might , now where is my vernier gauge….
Original car as per Tamiya instructions.

Hi Trackstar,
Can you provide us with a link to where you purchased that S14a Shell from..?
I have one already but after a head on collision with my brother in laws car it’s looking a little scuffed to say the least so I would love to purchase a fresh shell.

I ordered it from my local model shop (future world models (http://www.futureworldmodels.com)), took about a week or so to arrive from the distributor.
Edit- Just noticed you're in this neck of the woods too, don't suppose you've been to this moto arena place in Silverstone have you?
Thanks for the info..
With regards to http://www.moto-arena.co.uk/
No I havent been there before but the place looks good from the website so may have to pay it a visit.
I have a 1/10 scale HPi Nitro car which needs a huge open space to get it up to its top speeds.
The best place I have ever used it to its full potentional is the huge car parks at the entrance to Silverstone circuit, however that was way back in the day.
Tiredoldgit - I have to say, the end result looks awesome, would be a shame to put a shell on it!!
Tracskstar - you said you thought the Losi Strike was alright, yeah? I'm fancying another car already, lol!!! Loving the B4 so far, but would be nice to have something that doesn't get beached by a stick!!
Noticed the Strike is pretty cheap now (something to do with not meeting race specs?), and seen one for sale, not been used for pretty cheap. I've read that a few people have had problems with dog bones and idler gears, but tbh, all trucks driven hard will break imo. Are they very quick out of the box, brushed 12T iirc.
Nice Mamba too, used to have a Marder, miss that a lot.
Ta, my mate had a marder and MT marder, the MT was awesome fun! Not started mine for over a year now :wack:

Hallsy, yeah the Strike has the odd weak point as you pointed out, but overall its awesome for the money. They are pretty big, in fact were too big for the race series rules, but that make them good bashers. Electronics on them are also supposed to be very good for a rtr model.
Hmm, I was very tempted - wish I had done some overtime before xmas!!! It's my missus' birthday this pay month, and I had a flat one!
Guy on Oople has a brand new one, never used (he says), for £70. So tempted, but I think I'll wait for now.
Just spent £30 on wheels & tyres for my B4!
Another weekend, another broken buggy!!
Hopefully something simple, I had a low (ish) speed crash into a mates car and it just stopped responding totally, I'm wondering if the on/off switch is nackered and the RX or ESC are not powering up at all. Nothing too serious, if it ends up being the ESC I'll just drop an Ezrun combo in there!
Couldn't resist the itch for a bigger basher - have bought a Hobao Pirate MT, bit old school but was cheap and should be a good laugh. Needs a bit of tinkering, comes with an Orion Wasp .26 engine, but needs engine mounts, exhaust spring & shell, maybe a better steering servo also. Hopefully have it all sorted for next weekend :)
Not sure what shell to go with, the proper Hobao one is OK, but I'd like something else, maybe a hummer or baja - will have to have a look around to see what might fit!
Just blown my engine into rather small pieces  Who sells k4.6 liners and pistons and conrods ?

Yea in stock although not the K5.9 (King star) one of the few engines we will not tune, they go pop at the drop of a hat. The rear bearing is made from cinder toffee, you start to get power from it and then it goes pop.
Force do a 5.9 which is a cracking bit of kit, same power as the K version but it holds together and comes in around the £130 mark I think.

Rob I'm gonna be after a 13.5t brushless motor & ESC for my new TC, will be used for drift comps and for trying my hand at racing at the local indoor club... I want something decent but I don't have a huge budget, and I'd preferably like an ESC with reverse that can be disabled for racing. Could you reccommend anything in the £150 area?

Just noticed this thread. I just bought a new receiver for my car as I want to get a set of the drift tyres and have a go at that this summer. Mines only a cheap eBay special with shaft 4wd and two speed. Probably a nightmare to get parts for too but hey I hardly ever use it so it's plenty for me.
I do want to start machining up some ally parts for it in work though just for the hell of it.

Well I had an annoying weekend, didn't get my Pirate ready in time. Exhaust gasket didn't come saturday :(
I made one out of coupler which sealed OK, so decided to fire the engine up - nothing, won't start :(
Now this is likely my fault as I stripped the cooling head off when I got it and took carb needles out, so have probably (hopefully) caused a small leak somewhere. Compression feels OK when turning by hand, but I'm no expert, lol!! Had fuel at carb, glowplug glowing (tried another as well), nothing.
If anyone has any info, I'd like to know how many head shims I should be using with 25% nitro. It's a Team Orion Wasp .26 which is the same as a Picco P3 .26. Mine had three head shims and from what I've read that sounds like most would use less for 25% but I can't get any solid info.

Hi guys, I'm trying to resurrect my old Tamiya Alfa Giulia but I'm having problems with setting it up. I'm a complete novice and I'm having problems getting it to run properly.
I'm using an Acoms Technisport D555 and using the tamiya TEU-101BK electroninc speed controller that came with the car.
When I power it on I can go through the setup procedure and the steering works perfectly. The first time I press the accelerator the motor spins at full power as it should but then it slows down and cuts out.
Its possible to crawl forward or back but using any more than minimum power causes the receiver to flash and cut out.
Battery is at 5.4v
Any ideas?
Cheers

Hi Dangerjim, your car's battery pack voltage should be around 7.2v, even the speedo's output for the steering servo is usually a minimum of 6v, so I think you should start by checking your battery!
DangerJim

Ah, minimum of 6v, I didnt know that. I'll charge it up again and see what happens.

Sounds good,i'll come up to the next one,i'm working this sunday! :(
Sooooo annoyed with my Pirate!! I just can't get it started!! Well, I can, once :wack:
It's an Orion Wasp .26 (Picco P3), initially I couldn't start it, and as it had a rotostart fitted and I was using a battery drill, so I bought a proper driver (spins much faster).
Just been out there today, tried a few times, nothing. Then just left it spinning over for a while and it started, and proceeding to throttle up, so I shit myself and piched the fuel line. I then noticed that the throttle was half open :wack:
Tried again and again and again, sounds like it's starting to go but nothing :( Getting fuel at the carb, glow plug lighting, checking for flooding. Carb set on base settings. Fed up now, too cold & annoyed!!!
When I did pinch the fuel line it ran on for about 2-3 secs without throttling up, so I don't think it's set too rich, maybe it needs richening up a bit to start better? I checked the engine for leaks after I got it, and it leaked a little through the front crank bearing, but nothing else.
If only I didn't panic when I did start it, maybe it needs some running, hasn't been used for a while!!
Thought I'd put some pics up after fitting my freshly painted shell, first time for me but came out OK :)
Can't see very well in pics, but it's carbon effect and metal flake backed up with black & white, with a touch of fluro yellow!!

Nice looking truggy that mate!
Thanks dude, it was originally sold as an MT, but I think really it's just a 4wd buggy chassis with big wheels, so as you say, kind of a truggy!!
I need to improve the wing mount, and will be fitting smaller wheels from a Dominator so I can use Maxx sized tyres.
Hoping the engine plays ball now :)
Just a quick q? Does the piston in a nitro car slide freely right through the liner or should it go tight at it's highest point for better compression. I have been unable to use my truck for ages, it will idle fine but as soon as you go anywhere it cuts out. Tried every conceivable adjustment and checked everything but not any closer to it running :( please help.
The piston should stick at TDC if it pushes through the liner or there is very little resistance at TDC then you would class it as dead. In all honesty it should stop about 3mm from the top of the liner , any more than this indicates ware .
its ok then, this means its something else  I will have to dig it out and get some more fuel etc. What fuel is the normal stuff? I have forgotten now.

Been to my local club a few times to watch and they're shockingly quick, these new "turbo" speed controllers run position sensors on the brushless motors so you can practically map the timing of the motor while its running! Its unbelievable how quick these go on a 13.5t motor when they use the "boost" setting.... All I need to do is not break it just before each round of the D1RC!
My current fleet includes a lightning st 10 (waiting on parts but going brushless )
Lightning stadium truggy with added f4.6 goodness
Lightning stadium pro with sts 0.30 madness
A well, it used to be a savage vrtually indestrucable jump truck
AND
My ERBE'S :notworthy:notworthy:notworthy One fully working and the other a complete rolling chassis (parts on order to complete )
Pics and vids soon

Very nice mate! its killing me not finding the time to sort mine out
Mmmmm ERBE... :smitten::smitten:
The standard ERBE is :smitten::smitten: Add £350 of hop ups and it is :smitten::smitten::smitten::smitten:
I forgot  to mention the Lightning Stadium 10 which will soon be brushless too
The Lightning Stadium Pro is rather special too , In effect it is a full on works car sold minus the rado gear and engine , As a man who likes quality trackstar I'm sure you will start drooling when I mention the Spektrum rx and the Savox and Hi Tec servos :smitten::smitten::D
But it doesn't stop there , The monstrous STS 0.30 is getting yanked out to be replaced by a 6 S brushless system :D:D:D:D:D It's going to be undriveable :smash::smash::smash:

+1, preferably before and after the 6S :D
I must admit Chris I'm really impressed with this Spektrum stuff. I was tempted to go for a low profile Savox servo for my steering but seeing as my Associated one cost me £70 and haven't used it, couldn't really justify another one :wack:
James gti, any idea how much you want to spend? There's a few here to look at: http://www.modelsport.co.uk/drift-racer/rc-models/rc-car-categories/9900/990010&MSAttributeID[85]=228

Spektrum make good radio gear but it is not as interference free as they claim , Several of my group have had signal drop outs at one particular site usually between the rugby posts :annoyed:

Tonight is my T/C racing debut. Bricking it, don't wanna break my car! :D:D
The motor with the "boost" settings is just insane, revs so high it sounds like a turbine :smitten:
Good luck with it!

I'm off actually, but Sha's due home from Italy in a few hours,so don't know what she's got planned! Seen the meet thing on facebook, but Risca's a good trek for me. :)
Thought I would share my kit with you all. I used to race in Wales years ago, now that I get weekends to myself I am going to start back in Coventry.
Both cars are 1/10th electric.

Memories! I'm sure I have an old Associated B2 lying around somewhere.
Can you get brushless 540 sized motors and Lipo cells for those now?
Well the B3 will take a lipo i should imagine as it accomodates stick packs. And as far as i remember the B2 chassis isnt too disimilar, and looking at the B4 that doesnt seem a million miles away. So i dare say you could, I am going to be running both of these on LiPo and stock Brushed motors.
from what I remember the B2 looked almost exactly the same. I'm sure I have one in my parents loft as well as a couple of Cougars, a cat, a dogfighter and my first racer, a Tamiya Falcon!
I gave up in 2002 and sold all my kit :-( had to buy it all back in 2005 when I came back. Then I had to stop again, now I am light years behind lol.
Did you only race in Wales or any national stuff?
Mostly Wales, did a few of the RRCi offroad events 4WD.

That battery tray will easily take a 3s lipo which is equivalent to 9 NiMH'S which when combined with a Xerun esc and brushless motor combo wil make that car ballistic :notworthy:notworthy
A word of warning on LiPos , Do not buy them in this country as the price is extorionate . £80+ for a 5000mah 2s is normal but ordering from Hobbyking in Hong Kong got me five 2s 5000mah and one 3s 5000mah and two Imax B6 chargers (beautiful little unit will charge ANYTHING ) for £150 + £22 customs rip off . OK so they took a month to arrive but what a saving

Cheers dude i will look into that, want to treat myself to a new touring car but torn between Xray T3, TC6, and MI4CX.
well RC cars have changed a lot since i had one.
my last proper car was a repsol escort ta-02 1from back in the 90's and the drive from the front and rear wheels was a metal bar
I remember those, I started out with a TL01 celica GT4, then schumacher Axis pro then the TC3 and they were evolving. These days the toys are unreal mate!!!!
And what is wrong with Wales :confused::smash:
Lol, didn't know if he would of bumped into me or my mates. We used to race 1/10th off road electric for a few years, my closest mate was national champion a few times.

Oh aye who was that? I have more than likely heard of him if not met him.

Richmond Rogers. One of the other lads in our 'gang' took the european championship once or twice, Kevin Moore but Richmond was a close mate.
Never heard of Richmond dude, but have heard lots about kevin moore!!! :-o
Yes, he used to have to have a shop over here, Moore's Performance House (MPH!). It was handy having factory drivers as mates, all the factory custom parts and chassis were handed down.

Is it still a competitive chassis? Ive got one sat in the garage thats done nothing for many a year now. Id be interested in upgrading it with the new style motors and battery packs and going racing if theyre still up there in terms of handling :)
Anyone interested in a cheap Chinese petrol engined 1/5th scale FG Marder style buggy? Ive got two for sale, one 2wd, one 4wd. Both CY petrol engined. They were brought over to look at. Theyve both been used twice for one tank of fuel on each outing. They are both in absolutely A1 condition, as youd expect given that theyve done nothing.
They come complete with all radio gear so are RTR. Cheap big fun. £245 for the 2wd, £395 for the 4wd. Ther picture below is minutes old, just took it. The controller shows scale.

Well I hope it is, I was talking to the guys down the local club and they say that with the new LiPo and brushless systems you tend to get torque steer from a shaft drive, however over a single lap they are quicker than belt drive, just hard to keep the concentration of having it on the edge for a 5min run. But i dont see why I cant put up a good fight with a decent motor and cells.
Ok, sounds good :) I only did one meet with it and there were grown blokes shouting at kids to get their cars out of the way. Way too intense for me, its just a bit of fun! Id like to have another go with a more relaxed club :)

Sounds exactly like when I used to race, I was young at the time and the adults took it so serious, really didnt like losing to a less experienced minor. I got competitive but now I just want to do it for fun.
I will let you know how I get on with my TC3 dude.

Oh yes, the Predator, I remember that! I went to Tenth Tech with Rich once or twice myself, didn't the owner have something to do with Tillet seats?!
I remember the Predator did have some very different ideas like all inboard pushrod suspension but especially initially it was very fragile. We called it the Pred-shed.
I remember the pred, I contemplated swapping from my Cat3000 to one as they seemed to be the quickest 4WD around, but as you say they had a fragile front end lol.
I ran a Pred for several years - "dead Pred" was the usual description, either 'cos you'd hit something and ripped a corner off, or 'cos the bevel gears had been shredded again.
Loved it, but when I changed to a Yokomo BC it was a revelation over bumps.
Bren are you running a 27Mhz Radio with those two 1/5 scales ?
I will let you know how I get on with my TC3 dude.
Cool :)
Bren are you running a 27Mhz Radio with those two 1/5 scales ?
Yeah, they run on the radio gear they came with. Just been out with the 4wd. Hasnt run for aaaaaggges but fired up easily enough and ran fine. If you are used to nitros then youll love it when you see how easy the petrol engined cars fire up, idle and run. Theyll do 20+ minutes to a tank and have impecible manners. Nitros are great (Ive got three of them, a highly modified Savage, a Rascal and a little 10th scale banger thing) but my god they can be annoying to get them running right sometimes.
Uploading a vid to Youtube now then its going onto Ebay :)
Just waiting for a replacemement brake part to come through the the 2wd before that gets videod and it goes up for sale.
