Hmm, if you have BT's 1571 answering thing, that sometimes messes stuff up and some modems won't recognise the dialling tone 'cos it pulses. Check that, it might be the problem.
bt just don't suddenly change the phone from tone to pulse, cuz im asuming that it u've had this line for quite a while now~? and also the fact that hes got his laptop to come on. have you tried whapping the modem into another slot? or used an external one?
r u using the same lead to go from modem to phone line?
some times ours does the same, its down to the "extension cable" being shit! if you uncoil it to quikly (has a wind up thingy on it) it wont connect without a hell of a lot of jiggling of the wire.

By pulse he means that the dialing tones pulses on and off to indicate you have a message, not the dialing. I've never had a problem with it though, not to say others won't...

Yes, apologies, that's what I meant to say. I know it took me about two days to work out that that was the problem I was having with my 56k'er. It may be that, it may not. The funny thing is that he may not be able to get back online to work out why he can't get back online :D
na, i is back :D
Luckaly mr.BOC decided to give me internet access at work (fool!)
Yes, phone line seems to be fine, like i said my laptop works fine with it.
Have tried:
two different internal modens in two different slots,
three different connection cabels
two operating systems (98/2000)
Its deffo a computer problem......possibly not even the modem as i have tried two, although one was a cheap jippo one which i dont think had the right drivers.
bloody computers
UH you've pretty much eliminated hardware there completely mate! lol
Must be the config of the pc mate. Have you got it set to wait for a dialtone??? Have you definately got the correct modem drivers installed?? try the generic ones that come with windows (Standard 56k modem)
Dave
tried taking the "wait for dial tone" off it does:
pickup - dial - beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep - beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep - beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep etc etc :D so not that.........
think i might do what i did to the laptop and format the bugger and start from scratch again...... :D
well, beeeeep beeeeep beeeeep would suggest number busy mate!! most odd.
Dave
exactomundo......... then plug laptop in, no probs
guess this means i will have to save all my porn off and start from scratch, that will take bloody ages! ;):p
